Chapter 20
C20 – Be Your Follower
“Ning!” Fu Nian approached Qi Ning and called out gently.
Qi Ning gave Fu Nian a surprised glance, stood up, and asked, “Brother Hui, did you need something?”
Fu Nian, driven by curiosity, inquired, “Was what you said earlier true?”
“What?” Qi Ning returned the curious look, a puzzled expression on his face.
Fu Nian asked in a hushed tone, “Did you really give Mr. Pei a thrashing?”
Mr. Pei, whose full name is Pei Liang, turned to a life of petty crime after high school. He wasn’t particularly formidable, but he had the backing of a reputable boss, Xu Linshan, which made him quite well-known at Sigu No. 1 Middle School.
Among the students at the school, those who fancied themselves as tough guys looked up to Pei Liang.
Qi Ning simply nodded.
Admiration filled Fu Nian’s eyes as he gazed at Qi Ning.
“Could I become your sidekick?” Fu Nian asked.
Qi Ning was even more perplexed.
“Do you really believe what I said?” Qi Ning’s face was a mix of skepticism and curiosity.
“Absolutely!” Fu Nian nodded emphatically. “I saw how you scared off those three guys earlier. They wouldn’t have looked so scared unless you were genuinely formidable.”
Qi Ning realized that Fu Nian was quite a character.
He chuckled and said, “The college entrance exams are just a month away. If we end up at the same university afterward, I’ll consider letting you be my sidekick.”
With that, Qi Ning bent over his papers again.
Fu Nian returned to his own seat, deep in thought.
“He wants to be my sidekick?” Qi Ning had sensed something unique about Fu Nian from their first encounter. Fu Nian’s approach was clearly a test of Qi Ning’s mettle.
His identity mattered greatly to him.
After the evening study session, Fu Nian offered Qi Ning a friendly warning, “Pei Liang is waiting for you at the school gate with his crew. You might want to climb over the wall to avoid them.”
Qi Ning looked at Fu Nian, smiled, and shook his head, “If I can’t handle this situation, how am I going to be your leader?”
With that, Qi Ning slung his backpack over his shoulder and headed towards the school exit.
“Qi Ning.” Suddenly, a figure darted out from the crowd.
Qi Ning turned to see Pang Yuejuan, her head bowed, tugging at his sleeve.
Qi Ning asked, “Is something the matter?”
Pang Yuejuan shook her head and replied, “No, it’s nothing. I just don’t want you to go. You haven’t seen what it’s like out there. It’s truly frightening.”
Qi Ning smiled, gently patting Pang Yuejuan’s head, and reassured her, “To me, this is no big deal!”
Pang Yuejuan remained still, gazing at Qi Ning’s retreating figure with a dazed expression.
Her eyes were clouded with bewilderment. She noticed that her former classmate had changed dramatically.
Yet, she couldn’t pinpoint why. All she knew was that Qi Ning seemed different from before.
Qi Ning hadn’t even reached the school gates when he spotted the three individuals.
They shamelessly blocked the entrance, scrutinizing each student leaving Sigu No. 1 Middle School.
Upon noticing Qi Ning, smug grins spread across their faces.
“Come here,” one of them commanded, pointing at him.
“Listen, kid, I’m giving you a chance to own up to your mistake. Otherwise, you might end up spending your night in the hospital,” another one taunted.
“The hospital? You’re giving him too much credit. Tonight, I’m going to make sure he’s left disabled.”
