Chapter 49
Chapter 49 - Living Quarters
Ye Hao returned to the crossroads, eager to see if he could locate the wandering soul.
In essence, a soul is the spiritual essence of a person.
Typically, souls journey to the Underworld, but some remain earthbound, often due to untimely deaths or a reluctance to move on.
Only a few of these souls pose a threat, and the majority fade away after some time.
The soul Ye Hao had encountered was already wounded by sword intent and he believed it would soon vanish.
It was only after inheriting the black dragon's memories that Ye Hao learned of the world's magic treasures, which are categorized as magic weapons and spirit treasures.
Magic weapons are the treasures wielded by the world's great masters.
There are numerous masters across the globe.
Yet, only those from Shaolin, the Temple of Heavenly Harmony, and Tibetan sects are deemed worthy of possessing magic weapons.
Spirit treasures, on the other hand, are exclusive to the Way of Nature.
The bronze dagger in Ye Hao's possession is a middle-grade spirit treasure, so rare within the Way of Nature that Ye Hao surmised Mei Xinxue must hold a significant rank within her sect to have acquired such an item at her young age.
Ye Hao was on the cusp of reaching the first level of Body Refining, yet he was already capable of channeling the vital spirit within him to wield the dagger.
This was precisely why the soul fled in terror.
Moreover, even without utilizing his vital spirit, no soul dared come within three meters of Ye Hao, as the bronze dagger instinctively protected him.
Spirit treasures possess their own consciousness.
Despite an exhaustive search, Ye Hao failed to find the soul and decided to head back to his quarters.
Approaching his room, he overheard Xiao Laoshi's jubilant voice.
“Yin Lan accepted my friend request!”
“Is Yin Lan the one with a face full of freckles?”
“Laoshi, you could broaden your horizons.”
Xiao Laoshi laughed heartily, “Sure, Yin Lan has freckles, but she's got a great figure. Without the freckles, she wouldn't be considered unattractive in our class.”
“Laoshi, you're quite the visionary,” Ye Hao said with a smile as he pushed the door open.
“Currently, hardly any guys are noticing Yin Lan, so my chances of success are at least 80%,” Xiao Laoshi said, his dark complexion brightening with excitement.
Ye Hao didn't quite know what to say about Xiao Laoshi's optimism.
Yin Lan might not be strikingly beautiful, but that didn't mean she wasn't selective.
Plus, Xiao Laoshi didn't exactly stand out in any particular way.
“Ye Hao, you've got to help me out here,” Zheng Xiaolong implored, approaching Ye Hao.
“No,” Ye Hao flatly refused.
“I haven't even told you what it is, and you're already saying no,” Zheng Xiaolong complained.
“You're going to ask about Bai Hehua,” Ye Hao guessed, a wry smile on his face.
“Yes, it's about Bai Hehua,” Zheng Xiaolong admitted, surprised that Ye Hao had guessed right. He then looked earnestly at Ye Hao and asked, “Aren't we brothers?”
Ye Hao disliked that presumption.
They had only met that day, so Ye Hao didn't consider them brothers.
“I don't know Bai Hehua well,” Ye Hao deflected.
“But you know Zhang Lan,” Zheng Xiaolong pressed on. “Zhang Lan and Bai Hehua are dorm mates. Could you ask Zhang Lan to help me get Bai Hehua to accept my friend request?”
“I'm not close with Zhang Lan either,” Ye Hao said, dismissing the idea, which clearly annoyed Zheng Xiaolong. At that moment, Ye Hao's phone began to ring.
Ye Hao checked his phone and saw a call from an unknown number.
Still, he decided to answer it.
“Who's this?”
“Guess who?” the voice teased.
“This is pointless,” Ye Hao said, recognizing the voice. How could he not know it was Zhang Lan?
“Ye Hao, why are you being like this?” Zhang Lan exclaimed.
“What's up?” Ye Hao asked.
“Bai Hehua might try to mess with you. Just try to endure it, okay?”
“Fine.”
“Also, this is my number. Make sure you save it.”
“How did you get my number?” Ye Hao asked, suddenly curious.
“What do you think?” Zhang Lan said, evading the question before hanging up.
Ye Hao slipped his phone back into his pocket. Zheng Xiaolong, watching intently, remarked, “Zhang Lan even called you. There's no way you two aren't close.”
“I want to know who leaked my phone number,” Ye Hao said, looking at Zheng Xiaolong.
Zheng Xiaolong was taken aback.
Unable to hide the truth, Zheng Xiaolong admitted, “It was me.”
Ye Hao took a seat and expressed his frustration, “I can't stand it when my personal information is leaked.”
“Ye Hao, are you out of your mind? She's gorgeous. Why wouldn't you want to give her your phone number?” Zheng Xiaolong asked, puzzled.
Ye Hao opened the book in front of him and replied, “I've already told you, I'm not acquainted with Zhang Lan.”
The book was the Encyclopedia of Herb, a hefty volume of nearly six hundred pages.
And this was just the first of four volumes in the series.
As Ye Hao browsed the Encyclopedia of Herb, his expression shifted subtly. The book was dense with information, and many herbs shared similar medicinal properties. It was quite a challenge for most people to memorize all this knowledge.
But Ye Hao was not like most students. With a photographic memory and a mind still expanding, he found it easy to absorb and integrate the information.
His cultivation practice endowed him with boundless energy, so lack of sleep was never a concern.
Yuan Gaoxing and the others noticed Ye Hao engrossed in his book and approached him out of curiosity. Yuan Gaoxing said with a smile, “Scholar, we finally have some downtime. Take a break from the books.”
“I'm just bored, so I'm reading,” Ye Hao responded.
“Let's play some poker,” suggested Yuan Gaoxing, a suggestion that Zheng Xiaolong eagerly seconded.
“I've been itching to play poker. Which card game should we play?” Zheng Xiaolong asked, eager to begin.
“How about we four play poker?” Yuan Gaoxing proposed after a moment's thought.
“I'm not familiar with card games. You all go ahead without me,” Ye Hao declined.
“Come on, Ye Hao, don't be a spoilsport. Join us,” Ye Hao was urged.
Ye Hao declined again, “I really don't know how to play. You guys go ahead.”
After Ye Hao repeatedly refused, Yuan Gaoxing didn't press further. He then went to the convenience store, bought a deck of cards, and started a game with Zheng Xiaolong and Xiao Laoshi.
The trio was engrossed in a game of three-card game.
To play the three-card game well, one needs a mix of skill and bravery—qualities that Xiao Laoshi clearly lacked.
Whenever he drew a strong hand, his face would light up with excitement, a telltale sign that consistently led to his downfall. In just three short hours, he had managed to lose two hundred yuan.
Ye Hao shook his head in disbelief.
He now realized why so many students flocked to the library—it was the incessant noise from their roommates.
Zheng Xiaolong and Yuan Gaoxing were well aware that Ye Hao was trying to study, yet they made no effort to keep quiet during their card games, erupting into loud cheers whenever they drew winning cards.
The lure of gambling is potent, and Xiao Laoshi was no exception. Even as the clock struck one in the morning, he showed no signs of wanting to quit, despite having already lost over five hundred yuan.
