Chapter 24 Challenge Quests
Aion had heard of the guild and the fact that they offered odd jobs to those who worked for them. Still, they onlly accepted members above ten years old, but they accepted requests from everyone. The only problem was the reward money… Aion was a broke as he could be. Still, Georges and Elio went with him the next day to the guild to lend the money since they knew that Aion wouldn't lose.
"You two should be trained right now," Aion said.
"Watching others fight can also be considered training," Georges said.
"I am also here to pay my debt," Elio added.
Aion had no idea what debt he was talking about, but he probably benefited as well from the tip Aion gave Georges. Nevertheless, they found the guild on the western side of the capital, which was probably the most underdeveloped part of the area. Working for guilds was a good way to make quick cash, but those who worked for them weren't exactly known for using their brains and thinking about the future, so they tended to use their money partying whenever they had the chance.
Even early in the morning, the guild had a lot of people sitting around tables and then drinking and eating a lot. They sure were free spirited to ignore such things as routine and logic. Most people looked at Aion and his brothers and frowned since it was too early for them to enter the guild. Still, they headed to the balcony and then talked with a blond, big bobbed receptionist.
"How can I help you?" The receptionist asked.
"We want to make a challenge quest," Georges said and then put a gold coin in front of her. "Today, we offer one gold coin to anyone below fifteen who manages to defeat him. The fee is one silver coin per attempt."
"... Understood," the receptionist said while looking at Aion.
She couldn't stop the kids. The guild accepted all kinds of requests aside from the shady ones, so she could only that the prank would end before a disaster happens.
"You can use the training grounds on the back of the guild for the duels," The receptionist said while she was writing the post of the request. "The guild takes ten cooper coins per day to maintain the requests on the board."
"All right, you should head there, Aion," Georges said. "We will tell the guys that we know that there is someone willing to fight them."
They came and then they left just like that… Those two also looked pretty excited and now Aion felt conflicted since he was going to beat children and take their money. That wasn't the real thing that was happening, but it was similar.
In any case, Aion noticed some stares while he was heading to the training grounds. It seemed that some adults wanted to see a noble child get beaten up, so they began to move. That also seemed like some quick cash for them, after all, most of the requests that pay one gold coin takes one week to complete.
When Aion reached the back of the building, he found something that resembled a walled soccer camp. It was divided into numerous areas and each one of them had a dummy that could be used for training. Aion also found some kids training there. They were all at least five years older than him, though. At the opposite end of the entrance of the building, there was an emergency exit. Probably used for the people there to hea faster to the central area of the capital.
"I should come here only once a week, so I should try to fight as much as possible," Aion thought.
A lot sooner than expected, Aion found a bearded old man approaching alongside a boy armed with a training spear. Although the challenge quests could only be approved if both sides use weapons without edge, Aion assumed that some people still find ways to ignore that rule. In any case, the boy was even taller than Henri, so he probably was fourteen or fifteen… He was also well built. The bearded man sure wanted to see Aion on the ground or he wanted the gold coin.
"He wants to challenge you," the bearded man said w while tossing a small coin bag with ten silver coins. "What are the rules?"
"The fight only ends once one of the sides is on the ground or surrenders," Aion said and then readied his spear. "Ready when you are."
The boy smiled, he already could imagine how he would use half of the reward. As soon as he assumed his stance, the boy charged at Aion.
When he got close enough, he thrusted his spear at Aion's face, but then the weapon stopped midway. Aion also attacked while targetting the tip of the target's weapon. He tried to overpower him, but Aion didn't move from the spot and his arms weren't trembling.
"What are you doing?" The bearded man asked. "Defeat him already!"
The next time, Aion decided to add another rule, no comments during the fight. In any case, the boy decided to rely on speed and aimed at several parts of Aion's body, but much to his shock, Aion reacted and blocked all the attack with extreme mastery. He didn't miss and he didn't use more strength than he had to. Once he realized that the opponent could only use the spear like that and didn't know any skills, Aion stepped forward and then overpowered the kid making him stagger and then he swung his spear to the sides and hit his legs making the kid fall.
"What the hell was that? How could you lose to a brat that small?" The bearded man asked.
The man sure was noisy and his voice got the attention of the others around. The older kid didn't know what to say, meanwhile, Aion just checked his weapon for any signs of damage.
"I guess I went too far… People will stop coming if they realize that my skill is beyond my age, way beyond," Aion thought.
