Chapter 118: Strange Life Form
Chapter 118: Strange Life Form
Heinald nodded slightly as he listened to what the old man standing in front of him had to say.
"Doesn't anyone see where these shadows go or where they come from?" Heinald asked.
The old man shook his head.
After chatting with him for a while, Heinald left his shop and began to wander the streets of the town.
"Don't these disappearing people leave any traces behind them?" Heinald murmured.
As he was walking in the street beyond the square, he saw a man and a small child coming from the opposite direction.
When they sensed Heinald's aura, they immediately knelt down and greeted him. Heinald realized that this man was an Apprentice Ainsar.
"Where do you come from?" Heinald asked.
"From the quarry outside town, my lord." The man answered.
"Why are you so comfortable when everyone else is so scared?" Heinald asked.
"I went to the quarry to look for missing persons, my lord."
Heinald frowned and asked, "With a boy?"
The man nodded lightly and said, "He wanted to come with me because he was afraid of being alone.
The boy shifted uncomfortably.
Heinald stared at the boy for a moment, then he looked at the man, "Did you notice anything strange?"
The man shook his head, "I didn't see anything in the quarries, my lord."
"I-I'm in the pit outside of town..." The boy interrupted him as he began to speak timidly.
"Child! How to speak in front of Lord Ainsar" The man raised his hand and prepared to slap the child, but he immediately collapsed to the ground due to the sudden weight on him.
"Hmph! You dare interfere with my investigation" Heinald's eyes lit up with a cold glare and he began to suppress the man even more with his energy.
The man couldn't breathe and couldn't even move his fingers. His skin was starting to turn purple.
As Heinald drew back his energy, the man took a deep breath and started coughing.
"What were you going to tell me, boy?" Heinald asked.
"M-My lord I was out hunting for prey and near a wooded areaa pitI" The boy suddenly started vomiting after he remembered.
Heinald turned his head and told the man next to the boy that he had the boy under his protection, and he would kill him if he dare to harm the boy.
Heinald gave him a sniff of peppermint and held him by the shoulders to help the boy in front of him recover. He looked at him carefully and said, "Take me to that pit!"
After Heinald gave the boy some peppermint to smell, the boy recovered and led him to the area of the pit he had seen earlier.
"M-My lordI" The boy wanted to say something, but he understood what he meant before he could even finish that sentence.
Heinald said, "You better be back before dark."
"Thank you, my lord!" The boy quickly bowed down and started running back into town.
Heinald approached the pit and peered in. The sight he encountered was hideous and at the same time startling.
Inside the pit were dozens of animal corpses whose blood had completely dried.
Almost immediately, Heinald entered the depths of the wooded area and began to wander among the trees. He wanted to know if there was anything else strange in this wooded area.
"Hm? What is that?" He saw a strange liquid stuck on a tree. When he examined this liquid closely, he realized that he had never seen such a liquid before. He didn't want to touch it directly and probed its surface with a stick.
This liquid had a mucus-like sensation. He put some of this liquid in a test tube he took out of his pocket. Then he continued walking among the trees, continuing to look around.
There was nothing strange in the energy surrounding him.
He checked the entire wooded area for several hours, but nothing caught his attention. After leaving the wooded area, he returned to the town and continued to wander the desolate streets of the town.
From his pocket, he took out the test tube and simultaneously created a palm-sized magic formation. This magic formation was in the shape of a circle with a pale yellow glow. When he dripped the liquid inside the test tube into this circle, the formation began to glow bright yellow light and suddenly shrank and disappeared.
The liquid inside the test tube had turned into an orb and began to glide in the air.
It was a simple formation that he discovered from a book he read. If there was a liquid like this around, he would find it thanks to this orb.
Heinald immediately followed the orb. After a short walk, the orb stopped in front of an old iron door.
When he opened the door, he saw that there were stairs leading down to this town. He smelled the nasty smells coming from below.
"You can't be serious" Heinald shook his head and went down reluctantly. The Orb kept making his way through the town's sewer tunnels, taking him straight to the target.
After a few tunnels, the orb had stopped.
Heinald's brows furrowed and he stood still for a moment at the sight. In front of him was a corpse covered with liquid he had found in the woods. Moreover, it was just beginning to decompose, not a very old corpse.
He was surprised to see the orb keep moving.
"Is there more?" Heinald's expression darkened.
As he continued to follow the orb, an iron gate appeared in front of them. He took hold of the door's thin bars and separated them with ease.
As he continued to move, he came to a wide area.
"Ugh!" Heinald had to restrain himself not to vomit at the sight.
There were dozens of corpses stacked on top of each other, and all their blood had been sucked out. They were covered in that strange liquid, just like the corpse he had seen before.
"Shit! Could all this be the work of a Pajtar?" Heinald muttered.
The Pajtars were a type of bloodsucking creature. However, they had no intelligence and would attack anyone they saw. The situation here seemed different.
He began to carefully scan the surroundings. He noticed a large footprint on the floor. When he started examining this footprint, he counted seven large fingerprints. These fingers were very thick and very short.
He thought of a creature with such a finger, but soon realized that he did not know such a creature.
Finding no other clue, Heinald decided to leave the sewer. As he was returning the way he had come, he suddenly heard a growl.
When he turned around, he saw a life form he had never seen before. He had four legs and no arms. It had a broad human-like rib, but without the lower part. It had only one eye and a mouth full of large fangs.
No energy waves were emanating from it.
This strange life form suddenly rushed towards him. With the strength of his four legs, he jumped towards him and opened his mouth at a wide angle.
Heinald immediately stepped to the side and punched it hard.
"Grargh!" The strange life-form made a sound as the fist slammed into his body and quickly flew all the way to the end of the tunnel.
The force of his fist shattered the rib bones of this strange life form, and these bones pierced its skin and came out.
The strange life form began to writhe, screaming in pain.
"Frost Wave!" A blast of cold air burst through Heinald's body and froze the entire tunnel.
That strange life form was frozen too!
Heinald went up to him and began to examine it.
He had no idea of the origin of this strange lifeform. He had obtained information about various types of living things from thousands of sources, but no such creature was mentioned in any of them.
"This lifeform is not a Magical Beast, but his body strength can be said to be on par with a Level 1 Ainsar. But this lifeform couldn't have killed all those Ainsars"
Heinald thought it was getting more and more interesting. Although this life form only had the physical strength of a Level 1 Ainsar, he still dared to attack him.
A Magical Beast would never do such a thing.
