Chapter 410 Decisive Attack
In war, decisive battles did not happen over time. Only a short battle could decide what side won or lost over that battlefield. A battle that lasted only a scant few hours could decide how the rest of a war was handled.
It was this ideology that Vera hoped to implement by staking so many assets against the capital of Rivera, Nylenor. She knew the defenses of the capital quite well. After all, she had grown up there, and before her mother was assassinated, she had toured Rivera quite often.
Of course, Vera did not expect her forces to just steamroll over the prodigious defenses of the greatest Empire in the world. She had been making plans for this move for many years. Several critical posts had been taken over by her subordinates, and it was through those posts that she would be able to deal a decisive blow to the defenses of capital, thereby allowing the forces of the rebels to cut straight through them like a hot knife through butter.
With everything set and ready, everyone awaited the coming time of the attack. Vera's double agents prepared themselves to sabotage the defenses of the capital when they were needed the most, while Leon prepared his own forces.
.
.
"I heard that Fort Sunflower fell yesterday. Old Andy might be dead." An Elf guard on the city wall of Magair, the outermost city of the Capital of Rivera. His name was Joe.
"Old Andy? I can't believe it! That old foggy loves his life more than anything. I'm sure he defected at the last moment." Another guard scoffed and swiveled his spear.
"What are you oafs talking about?! Focus on your duties. You can chat when you change shifts." The superior officer passed by the station of the soldiers and scolded them.
"Yes!" The two guards along with their comrades stood straighter and waited until their superior had left before relaxing.
"Phew-"
BOOOM!
Before Joe could sigh in relief a massive explosion shook the entire wall and he felt the world around him shake.
DONG! DONG! DONG!
Alarm bells ranged loudly as a series of explosions rocked the entire wall of Magair. Rocks fell and tumbled as entire sections of the wall blew into pieces and crumbled on itself.
"The magic shield! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SHIELD?!!"
The soldiers guarding the wall fell into a panic as they were caught completely off guard by the sudden attacks. Joe got to his feet and looked around. His friends were all fine. They quickly picked themselves up and rushed to a better vantage point, as the part of the wall they had been in had partially collapsed, only to be met with the squashed body of their superior officer in the next hallway.
"Good Gods! We need to do something!" Joe gasped.
BOOM!
The ground shook beneath their feet once more.
"The magic shields! Something must be wrong if the attacks can hit the wall directly!" Someone said and the others nodded. Without speaking, they immediately began to move through the collapsed hallways.
As the strongest of the group, a Peak B rank, Joe led the way. He jumped through an empty and open area that had a hole blasted right through the entire wall while creating a strong wind barrier. The power of the wind carried his body and supported him through the large open space. His comrades followed after him and the group of five continued to go downwards. The magic formation that powered the magic shield that was supposed to protect the wall was located in a cavern beneath the wall.
Boom!
As the group of five made their way through one of the halls, the wall on the side suddenly exploded and several shadows passed in through the smoke and dust.
"Enemies!" Joe hissed and held his spear tighter.
The smoke and dust cleared up, revealing the figures of four Dark Elves.
"Surrender and you will be spared. Resist and your head shall roll." The leader of the rebel team that breached this section of the wall said and brandished his black blade. The blade glinted in the afternoon light that filtered in through the hole that they had created.
"Over my dead body!" One of Joe's comrades said and held up his spear. The rest of them did the same, ready to fight to the death. "Joe, go ahead. We can handle ourselves here!
Without waiting for their friend's response, the four soldiers threw themselves forward and attacked the Dark Elves ferociously. Magic and swords clashed as the eight people began to tousle.
Joe gritted his teeth and bypassed the group to keep heading down. He passed several sights of battle between the rebels and the defending soldiers, but he did not stop to help. Before long, he arrived at the entrance to the magic shield formation. But to his dismay, he could see dozens of his fellow defenders' bodies, laying lifeless outside the entrance.
Instead, several dozen soldiers that were dressed in the ensemble of the rebels guarded the entrance.
"No..." Joe whispered. He had not revealed himself and was hiding using magic. He could sense multiple Peak B ranks guarding the entrance and knew that trying to rush forward would simply be suicide.
"Oho? I spy with my little eye, a sneaky rat!" A faint voice chuckled behind Joe and he froze. He did not freeze of his own volition, but because he could not longer control his own body!
Slowly, his out of control body stood up and turned around, coming face to face with a pale skinned man. Although he did not recognize this man, he could clearly feel the strong aura of an A rank radiating from the man's body.
"Did you come here to restore the magic shield? It's too bad, my people have already taken over it. But don't worry, I'll keep you alive. My master might have a good use for you." He smiled and Joe's heart tightened. He tried to kill himself, but nothing was working. His body was not even listening to him!
