Soul for a Girlfriend?

Chapter 258 - A Failure

I was at a complete loss regarding Shiraishi.

I couldn't make sense of anything she was doing. She was acting just fine a few days ago but yesterday she acted as if I didn't exist at all. Just when I thought that everything was alright, she decided to act weird.

What the hell was happening?

I didn't talk about this with Lilith. I was probably scared at the possibility that Lilith would point out my failure and it would lead me to face the fact that I couldn't complete the contract and it would lead to my death.

I was wrong at that time.

I'm straying farther away from this target with each passing day. My plan failed, and things weren't going according to what I assumed. Shiraishi was acting completely wild and illogical.

I was in such a delicate situation that the thought of failing this contract was all that was in my mind. And the fear of losing my life was making me more and more desperate as time was progressing.

The first time I realised what fear of losing life was.

I was noticing Shiraishi's behaviour from the first day I met her and a lot of things caught my eye that I haven't told Lilith about. At that time, I thought that my mind was creating alibis out of desperation.

I was failing again?

No wonder my parents were never satisfied with an incompetent peice of shit like me. I was useless and didn't deserve their appreciation. I was never meant to be someone who can be reliable.

They weren't wrong after all.

What am I even doing with my life at this point?

"Hey… Sakamaki?" I heard a soft voice call out my name which broke me off my train of thoughts. Turning my head towards the source of voice, my eyes shifted towards Kizhashi who was staring at me with her curious azure eyes as I replied, "Ye… Yes?"

"Are you alright?" She asked with a frown on her face and I nodded vaguely, "Yes…"

"You seem to be zoning out a lot recently."

Since that day, I haven't been able to concentrate on my classes and other stuff. Tsūmen and Kizhashi have asked me if I was alright or not but I just brushed them off with a vague smile.

I couldn't afford telling them.

Though, out of all my friends only one person was aware of my situation with Shiraishi.

And that dude was Seryoku Kuroi.

Though he hasn't been bugging me about it. He was with me when a few things happened so he had a good idea about the discord between me and Shiraishi. I liked the fact that he wasn't nosy about it and minded his own business.

I was returning from our biology lab which was on the top floor. I had my notebook and other stuff in my hand as I was walking down the stairs. I was in a hurry since the next class was Mathematics and I didn't want to be late there.

Especially since I got less marks in mathematics, my teacher won't miss a chance to taunt me.

I was about to turn around towards my class when I bumped into someone and staggered back a few steps while the things in my hand fell on the ground and the other person fell too with loud noise.

My eyes shifted towards them and I noticed it was Moriko.

She was sitting down holding her right knee while her belongings were lying around her and it was a mess everywhere. I stood up and brushed my back and picked up my stuff while she glared at me.

"Are you alright?" I asked, leaning down a bit and advancing my hands towards her. Grabbing my palm, she stood up and instantly yelled at me, "Dimwit! Can't you see where you're going?"

"Sorry, I was in a hurry." I apologised as she was brushing the dirt off her back. She looked down towards her knees and said with a flinch on her face, "Jeez… my knee hurts a bit."

As I was already leaning down, I had a clear vision of her legs. My eyes shifted towards the small scratch on her knee, from which a bit of blood was flowing. Standing up, I looked at and said, "Eh, no big deal. Just a scratch, a band aid will do."

"Bruh… you need glasses or something?" She rolled her eyes and started picking up her things. There were a lot of papers and notebooks lying around. I wondered what she was doing with all that.

"Probably." I answered while trying to help her. Picking up a notebook, I was about to hand it over to her but something odd caught my eyes. In the place of the name, her full name was written.

"Ada…" I was about to ask her about it when I felt sudden pain in my left arm and the notebook fell from my arm while I hit the ground too. I was familiar with this kind of pain.

I knew exactly what it was about.

"Hey! Are you alright?" I heard Moriko's voice, but I wasn't in the state of mind to assess what was happening around me. I heard a bit of ruckus as other students were gathering around too.

I hated when that happened.

I somehow managed to glance towards my left hand and the mark was glowing very faintly.

That was unnatural.

"Oi?? Sakamaki?" Moriko shook me holding my shoulders, as I replied between breaths while feeling that excruciating pain, "I'm… alright…"

"No you're not! What is happening?" She yelled at me. I remember someone pulling me up by arm and walking somewhere. Before passing out, the only things that left my lips were, "I don't…"

My memory from that point onwards was blanked out and to this day I can never recall what actually happened to me. Though I had a pretty good idea, but I wasn't in my senses at all.

It was the first time the pain was so much that my nervous system just decided to dip and shut off the system.
