Chapter 3 - Board Meeting
Leon entered his room and grabbed his phone to check the downloading progress.
"99.69%"
"99.82%"
"99.97%"
"99.98%"
"99.99%"
Leon waited for a minute, but the download was stuck at 99.99%.
"100.00%"
SIGH!
Leon let out a deep sigh and plugged the phone to charge it. Then, he went to the kitchen and washed the dishes.
After that, he opened the fridge and took out four slices of bread and two eggs. He placed the pan on the stove and turned it on.
After making breakfast, he decorated the dish on the plate while humming and took out a juice can from the fridge. Then, he went into the living room and placed the plate on the table.
He turned on the television and switched to his favorite channel to watch his favorite show called— King's game.
King's game was a reality show in which 50 players participated. The show was legalized and permitted to be aired 24/7 in an unedited format in the whole world.
It was a six-month-long show, and every day, a random participant was selected as a king. The king could give any orders and make the participants do anything— including killing each other.
However, there were certain rules the participants must follow. And certain restrictions, like the participant, could not abort the show and quit.
The king was only allowed to order one participant at a time, and he wasn't allowed to order the same thing again. So even if the king ordered to kill someone, he could only use the kill command once to kill a random participant.
The king couldn't give direct orders to the participants by calling their names.
All the participants were given a random number that was changed every hour— unknown to the king. The king was only allowed to randomly choose the numbers to give them orders.
After 24 hours, another participant was chosen as a king. As time passed, the number of participants decreased. Some either died by the king's order or committed suicide due to overwhelming pressure.
Out of 50 participants, the last remaining player was considered as a winner.
The winner was given a 10 million dollar prize.
Leon was excited to see the show; however, it was out of service because of the purge night.
Leon switched to other channels only to find out all the channels were out of service.
SIGH!
He sighed in frustration and began eating breakfast.
"Maybe I will try to participate in the show in the next season," Leon muttered.
Leon wanted to get fame, but he wasn't aware that he was already world-famous as a secret killer.
After eating breakfast, Leon got ready to go to college. He went into his room to grab his phone and laptop.
When Leon came out of his room, the television service came back. He immediately switched to his favorite channel, but it was interrupted by a countrywide broadcast by the government.
The chief officers and news reporters were in a board meeting that was being broadcast live with the presidents of the other country.
"Is it working?" the female reporter asked.
"Yeah, it's live. You can start the meeting," a voice replied.
"Hmm!" Leon hummed in wonder and sat on the couch in a relaxed manner.
"So, our country had its second purge day, and I have to admit, it took a very unexpected turn." the chief officer stated.
"Yeah, it did."
"Who would have thought that someone would aim at the president of all people."
The chiefs were talking to each other, but suddenly the president of the neighboring country interrupted them.
"He was a fool!"
A female president of another country said, "When he first talked about introducing the purge system, I stopped him. I told him that it was not the correct way to get rid of the overpopulation, but he didn't listen to any of us and introduced the purge system anyway."
"What do you think about president GG's death?" a news reporter asked the presidents of the other countries.
"I think GG had it coming. He should have taken precautions and made a better system for the purge," president S.H replied.
"So, president S.H, what are your thoughts about the purge?"
"I think it's a wonderful idea to get rid of the useless people burdening our mother earth," he replied.
The news reporter turned to the female president and asked, "President T.R, what about you? What are your thoughts on the purge?"
"I think it's absolutely ridiculous and inhumane. I will never treat my citizens like that. As a president, it is my duty to save and protect my citizens," the female president replied.
"President K.I, what are your thoughts on the purge?"
"I… I think there isn't a better alternative to deal with overpopulation."
"So, when are you implementing the purge system in your countries?" the news reporter asked with a curious look on her face.
"I will never implement it," the female president replied.
President S.H cleared his throat and asserted, "I will be implementing it the following month; however, I am not a fool like GG. I will add certain limitations to the purge day."
"Such as?" president K.I asked.
"The main motive for the purge system is to get rid of the useless people who aren't doing anything for the country; such as, homeless, uneducated, unemployed, and criminals. So I will only initiate the purge system in certain areas of the country."
After a brief pause, he continued, "The citizens who earn more than 1 million a year shall not be killed. Other people like doctors and civil servants shall not be killed. Politicians and celebrities shall not be killed. There are a few more restrictions, but I will announce them when the purge system goes live in my country."
"What about the document that president GG signed? Can that be considered as a legal decree?" The news reporter asked the chief ministers of the country.
"The killer had submitted the documents to the court. We have the judge of the supreme court who is willing to talk about this matter," they replied.
Leon gulped down with a tensed look on his face and waited for the judge to speak.
"Any paper the president signs is considered legal, and he signed it in the presence of over one hundred thousand viewers," the judge stated.
"So the purge will continue even after a new president is elected?" the reporter questioned.
"Indeed. There is nothing we can do. The purge system will continue in this country until there is no one left alive."
"Yes!" Leon jumped cheerfully.
"Thank you very much for joining us!" The camera focused on the news reporter as she said, "There is an important announcement to make."
Leon grabbed the remote to turn off the television, but he stopped to listen to the announcement.
"There were a total of 1442— and still counting, casualties this month, surpassing last month's death count of 466 deaths!"
"I only killed 19 this time," Leon murmured.
"Unlike last month, the country will be in a 3-day lockdown. And the next election will be conducted the following week."
"What?!" Leon exclaimed. "But I wore my favorite clothes today!"
Annoyed and frustrated, Leon turned off the television and went to his room to get some sleep.
