Chapter 64 Sharpening
Until now, Ludwig had gotten his hands on a bunch of things that he couldn't really use. However, he had refrained from selling them until now.
He knew that Liam would only give him 30% of the profits. That was simply too less for him because he was the one who found the treasures and he wanted to maximize the profit he could earn from selling them.
Liam didn't mind that kind of attitude. He wouldn't give up on 70% of profits just because the other party was in possession of a shop as well.
However, now that Ludwig had not sold any of the treasures he had collected, Liam had a big variety to choose from.
He didn't really like teaching, but he could demonstrate a bunch of things in exchange for the right type of payment. Of course, it had to be of use to him, otherwise, the deal would be pointless for him.
"Give me the whetstone and I will show you guys a few things," Liam said while pointing at the thin silver whetstone. Ludwig had never used a whetstone so he refrained from using it to sharpen his weapon. It was more likely that he would end up cutting himself than properly sharpening his weapons.
The Black Steel blade was not dull either, so there was no need to force himself to use the whetstone.
"It's yours. But show me how to use a whetstone properly as well," Ludwig said, motioning Liam to claim it for himself.
Liam moved to the whetstone, picked it up, and smiled lightly.
'As long as Felicia learns how to cook some delicious meat rather than something that looks like meat but tastes like rubber, everything will be fine,' He thought disgruntled, hoping sincerely that his cooking lessons, and butchering demonstration would be imprinted in the minds of the natives.
Having personal cooks would be a pretty nice add-on.
[『Xaltalite Whetstone』–Circleless Material A- Rank–
Description: A fine-grained stone used for sharpening tools. The whetstone will automatically adjust its fineness and wetness according to the amount of Arcane Power supply. It increases the blade's sharpness ridiculously, providing a temporary enhancement as long as the whetstone is used properly.
Remark: Requires high control of Arcane Power. Weapons may shatter if not used properly. Don't cut yourself. It's painful!]
Despite being an [A-] Item, the Xaltalite Whetstone was definitely hard to use. Liam recalled how he had used this type of Whetstone on the battlefield and that he had nearly cut off his thumb while hastily sharpening a weapon. He also recalled that the blades of a bunch of weapons were so thin that they actually broke. That was how Liam had learned to only sharpen high-quality weapons made of the best materials with the Xaltalite Whetstone.
"Your Black Steel weapon would have broken if you would have used the Xaltalite Whetstone without any experience," Liam informed calmly, supplying a tiny trace of Arcane Power to the Whetstone before he sat down on the ground. He moved a few stones around himself to have a small elevated platform in front of him, replacing a table, before he laid out the Arcane Kunai in front of him.
Since the Arcane Kunai was already razor-sharp, there was actually no need for him to sharpen it any further.
However, the reason for Liam to sharpen the Arcane Kunai despite his knowledge was the temporary enhancement the Lesser Relic could receive after being properly sharpened with the Xaltalite Whetstone.
If his little sister got her hands on a good quality Xaltalite Whestone by chance, the temporary enhancement would last several hours.
After adjusting the grit of the whetstone by injecting more Arcane Power, Liam reached the higher grits the Xaltalite Whetstone could reach. A higher grit of a whetstone would provide a finer edge and create a polished finished product. That was everything Liam needed for the Arcane Kunai.
The Xaltalite Whetstone was already wet which was another one of its functions to never become too dry and create a slurry on the surface of the stone which was a great assist in the sharpening process.
With the stone platform in front of him, Liam had a stable surface to work on. The stone platform was not wobbly and didn't move around either, as long as nobody would throw themselves against it.
Liam held the blade at a 25-degree angle to the whetstone, and he started to move the blade across the stone in a smooth sweeping motion. He started from the base of the blade and moved it toward the tip while making sure that he maintained a consistent angle throughout the entire process.
After repeating the process a few times, the flipped the Arcane Kunai over and repeated the process on the other side of the blade. Liam checked the edges of the Arcane Kunai every now and then and polished it until the edge was smooth and the blade cut even more cleanly through the designated targets.
When he was satisfied with the edges of the Arcane Kunai, he wiped the blade clean, which allowed him to see the tiny intricate patterns that seemed to have been imprinted themselves on the Arcane Kunai's blade.
Usually, these patterns were not visible but Liam had activated his Soultrait to make sure that the temporary effect was granted to the sharpened Arcane Kunai.
The only issue Liam had was that he didn't have the right oil to coat the edge of the Arcane Kunai properly to fine-tune it. Fortunately, the Arcane System existed, which made it easy to purchase the oil he had in mind for a single Arcane Kunai.
"Done," Liam said, looking up to the natives, who stared at the gleaming blade with interest. Their thoughts were like an open book for Liam, who turned over to the corpse of the Boar.
It was about time for him to show off his prowess as a blacksmith and how to dissect the Boar's Corpse by draining the meat's blood and then proceed to show them all how to cook a decent meal.
That way, he could leave these tasks to the natives in the future. Demonstrating everything once or twice before never doing it again was certainly a fair bargain, especially if it gave him the Xaltalite Whetstone as a bonus reward!
He had definitely made a good trade!
