Chapter 242: True nature of Derik Angus
Chapter 242: True nature of Derik Angus
The next morning, Derik and Lucien set out early. They only camped because no matter strong Lucien may seem, he was still mortal and needed to eat and sleep, unlike Derik whose body is dead. He is no different from a walking corpse.
The powering wind beasts Derik sensed were gone so they flew this time around covering even more ground than usual. This time where they are heading was farther than Lucien had expected! They were heading towards the edge of the continent, and that journey alone took about a month even with their terrifying mobility. During that month, they fought no battles and just moved in the day while camping at night.
During this time Derik and Lucien shared stories of their past with each other and slowly grew more fond of the other. Both of them had experienced a lot in the past and maybe this was what attracted them to each other. While Derik started from a poor background, Lucien had a rich background but both of them had something in common. They were both betrayed by the people they called family and ended up forming strong bonds with friends who proved to be more loyal than their parents and siblings.
Derik explained how he forgave his family but could never bring himself to spend time with them after the event. Apparently, even though he forgave them, he still never bring himself to stay in the same home with them. Lucien understood Derik since his parents were still alive and he even got to know that he has a little brother now, but even then he has never had the guts to meet them again.
"You have a little brother? Dummy! He doesn't have anything to do with this!" Derik rebuked.
"Do you ever regret not spending more time with them?" Lucien asked Derik, leaving him momentarily stunned by the question.
"Yes... I wish I could take it all back but, now is not the time for that!" Derik said with a gloomy look on his face.
Days passed and weeks ran by and they spoke more frequently and after a month they finally reached the edge of the continent. It was like a massive cliff with an endless sea just ahead of it. Gazing at it, Derik and Lucien couldn't help but remember the looming danger traversing the endless sea just to get to them.
"I guess that's what we are looking for" Lucien said as he saw an ancient stone gate with strange ruins visible on it.
"This should lead us to the place" Derik walked, inspecting the old gate. His eyes seemed calm but his body was a bit shaky due to excitement.
"This is not a nest!" Lucien said with an annoyed look on his face but Derik ignored him and continued inspecting the ancient gate for a while.
"I guess this is it... I need your blood" Derik said after a while causing Lucien to frown.
That was a strange and abrupt request.
"The dragons were sealed in here by someone powerful and that's why we don't see them flying around this world anymore. Many of you actually thought they were sleeping but the truth remains that they were sealed away... How the old man was able to acquire a shadow dragon egg and still return to this world is something even I don't know of... To unseal it the blood of a dragon is needed... Meaning those dragons would never leave but none of these people expected that there will be people related to the dragon race in the future... You have the dragon blood and the inheritance... You should be able to open it" Derik said calmly.
Listening to him, the look on Lucien's face grew grave and more twisted until Derik couldn't help but shoot him a questioning glance.
"If all the dragons were sealed don't you think it's for a reason? We don't know how many dragons are in there? What types of dragons... Since they have been in there for long, I am sure their number is not little... Even if we open the gate, how do we plan to leave?" Lucien threw out so many questions since he strongly believed that Derik's plans were wrong on so many levels.
"Once the gate is open we destroy it and leave it open forever... The numbers don't matter... At most, we will get to face a few emperor tier dragons... We can definitely win!" Derik said casually like their victory is assured.
Hearing this Lucien frowned and wanted to rebuke him but then some thoughts crossed his mind and he looked at Derik with confused eyes.
"I have the dragon blood and inheritance... With Rakuzen's help, we can try to communicate... Get them on our side" Lucien said but Derik just shook his head in rejection.
His eyes carried no emotion as he gazed at Lucien and said those words.
"I would rather have them in my undead army as undying beings, using their souls to boost my cultivation level to the champion realm and gain their hundred percent allegiance in death than have them alive with a chance of them revolting against me... Call that evil, I call that efficiency" Derik said with a blank face, making Lucien shudder.
It was obvious that someone capable of remaining calm while saying such words miss have done something that crazy before. Looking at Derik's past, Lucien couldn't help but wonder how he got millions of people in his undead army! He has been so naive to think Derik was a compassionate and good person. The fact remains that Derik's emotions are limited to only a select few people, the rest are more like extras to him.
Disposable!
"I didn't stand at the top of my world by becoming sentimental and all that... Bad people live longer than you think! You are looking at one of them! I simply did what was necessary! What's needed to be done! That's all there is to it!" Derik said coldly and Lucien shuddered.
