Chapter 136: Police Suspect?
There was something beautiful about this because it allowed everyone to understand how precious life was and how everything could be taken at any moment.
Kyle spoke to the police, giving them a more accurate depiction of what happened as he understood how important this was.
Priscilla informed them of Mike's real name and his involvement in other crimes.
Kyle couldn't believe that something this rare had occurred and could only wonder how long Mike would have continued his operation if he hadn't put a stop to it.
The most recent crime was as close as a month back.
Jane couldn't believe it but this reinforced that she was an awful judge of character.
There was no way she could have predicted this but she was closest to him so there had to be signs of his depraved nature.
"Officer Oliver, I'm glad we could help in some way but I want to apologize for keeping it away from you," Kyle apologized, showing he wasn't shy to take accountability.
"It is fine. We understand your situation, but we're more impressed that you were able to find and save her…" Oliver said, sounding almost suspicious.
"I was going to visit Jane and Ella to make sure they were okay, that was why I discharged myself but I was surprised when I saw Mike loitering about," Kyle responded with a perfectly crafted lie, one that had been marinating in his brain for hours.
"You say that but we have CCTV footage of you at a hotel," Oliver pointed out, rubbing his lower chin.
"... And if that was the case, then the time doesn't add up," Oliver concluded, looking Kyle right in the eyes.
There was silence but what Oliver was implying was clear as day, he was calling Kyle's story bullshit.
"Is that so? One of us must be wrong," Kyle's certainty was what confused him, there was no way he would maintain his stance if this was a lie as they had just told him they had visual evidence.
The truth was, Oliver did trace Kyle's movement when he left the hospital that morning when his partner was busy with the DNA of Clarence.
It was surprising to see Kyle discharge himself approximately a few hours before Jane was abducted. If he didn't know any better, he would have said they were working together but that wouldn't make any sense in terms of motive.
Kyle's story did add up because the timeframe he left the hotel could put him at their place before the abduction took place.
But Oliver found it suspicious that he didn't do anything if he saw Clarence carry out his attack and instead, chose to allow him to do as he pleased.
Was that because he wanted the police to back him up? The call did come in and Clarence had a gun in his possession so that put Kyle at a disadvantage for a confrontation.
Oliver had no concrete evidence and this was simply him trying to shake Kyle down but he wasn't bulging.
"You're right and that person would be me," Oliver admitted his fault, bringing an abrupt end to the conversation.
Priscilla was looking around the house like she was searching for something but Kyle didn't react to this as there was nothing that could be found in his apartment.
However, a second look told him that she was admiring the state of his place.
This looked like a rundown building from outside so one would be expecting the same when inside.
They had concluded their business with Kyle and left the area but Kyle knew he needed these officers on his side because he didn't know when he would need them in the future.
"Thank you very much, officers," Kyle showed his gratitude, walking them out of his place and back to their car as this was common courtesy.
But Kyle attempted to make a good impression.
"Thank you very much for your cooperation, sir," Oliver showed his appreciation because he didn't need to talk to them but Oliver noticed that Kyle might be putting up an act. There was something behind his eyes, something sad.
Of course that would be the case, he just took a life and hasn't even processed the gravity of that act itself but Oliver saw it.
"Please, call me Kyle and if you need anything. Let me know," Kyle offered but this was something that everyone said so the police officers didn't take any deeper meaning to this.
Oliver nodded and tried to start the car but it didn't go according to plan as the engine didn't respond.
Oliver kissed his teeth in irritation before attempting to start it again but to no avail.
Kyle wanted to return home but decided to stay there to see how this played out.
He could tell the officers were embarrassed but this was strange considering that they could need to engage in a high-speed pursuit at any time.
Kyle couldn't imagine them needing to chase down a criminal only for their car not to start.
"Hm… Do you need some help?" Kyle offered.
He wondered how he could win them over and an opportunity presented itself.
"It is fine, we wouldn't want to trouble you," Oliver said.
Kyle noticed that Priscilla didn't talk much, almost like she was lost in thought.
He tried to start it up again and their blushes were spared as the car finally kicked into gear.
"Once again, thank you, Kyle…" Oliver showed his gratitude but Priscilla didn't say a word.
"Officer Priscilla," Kyle called out. She turned to look at him, wondering why she was being called.
"Thank you for all you have done. I know you have taken a special interest in this case and if I wasn't there to protect Jane, I'm certain you would have, and for that, I'm grateful," Kyle thanked her with such vigour that she was momentarily stunned as people don't show this much gratitude to cops or at least she hasn't experienced it personally.
Oliver was the same as both of them nodded, Kyle could tell they appreciated his words.
This was the end of their conversation but from the corner of his eyes, he saw Aiysha.
Aiysha was approaching him and Kyle already knew what the conversation that was to follow would be about.
"Hi Kyle, I heard about what happened. Are you alright?" Aiysha began the conversation.
"I'm much better now but I was surprised not to see you with your husband," Kyle said, the way he presented it made it difficult for her to catch on that he knew they were having marital problems.
"Ha! It was late and someone needed to stay home with the children, I did want to come to see you," Aiysha not only found a valid excuse to explain her absence but it was one that Kyle had no way of finding out if it was true or false.
"I see…" Kyle responded and then there was silence.
"Did the police catch the person responsible?" Aiysha asked and Kyle thought about telling her exactly what happened but it wasn't something he could risk.
Also, it was none of her business but he could tell that she had been crying, he could deduce this by the dried tears on her face.
"Are you alright?" Kyle asked. A question he pondered on because he knew this was a window for more personal conversations to take place.
"You noticed? My hormones are all over the place but I don't want to bother you, not after what you went through," Aiysha said but Kyle knew this might be an opportunity to help Jones fix his marriage.
He also knew it could backfire and if it did, there was no telling what damage it would do to their relationship as well.
However, Kyle was willing to risk it all and this was the only reason he gave her a listening ear.
"What's wrong?" Kyle's voice was filled with concern but Aiysa shook her head.
She didn't want to talk. No, she didn't want to talk out here.
"How about we meet up for lunch after and you tell me all about it?" Kyle proposed.
Aiysha looked relaxed at this suggestion and agreed to meet Kyle.
She went back inside; Kyle heaved a sigh of relief, things were getting out of control and Kyle couldn't explain what was going on with him but his nightmares were getting worse ever since the attempt on his life.
It felt real but the problem was that he couldn't wake up when he pleased and this made it hard for him to discern if it was a dream or not.
Kyle knew he had bigger things to worry about but was glad that he had Jane to keep him company until further notice.
-
Cassandra's divorce hearing neared, she wanted to keep Kyle out of it or he might be repulsed by the reality of a divorced woman.
The fact that she had little to no money to hire a half-decent lawyer as opposed to her husband.
This was the disadvantage of being a housewife because if their marriage doesn't work.
The chances of landing back on your feed at such an advanced age were slim hence why some choose to stay regardless of the abuse they face.
Cassandra was different, she was going to break away but she was hit with a reality when her check bounced.
She couldn't afford the lawyer she had hired and this was a low-tier one at that.
She was desperate and desperate times called for desperate measures.
Cassandra decided to give Kyle a call and hoped to God that he could save her.
