Chapter 70: Never Trust Her Again + Giveaway Announcement
Chapter 70: Never Trust Her Again + Giveaway Announcement
She sat, staring at him, licking her lips and wanting to lick his. A small voice at the back of her reason pled to her reasoning skills. It kept trying to snap her back into reality. The nagging voice grew louder and louder until it was screaming at her not to devour him. Reluctantly, she retracted her tongue.
The Dragon's magic cookie powers caused her to completely lose track of what was going on around her.
She cleared her throat before speaking. "Did you say something?"
He dipped down closer. "I said your words are untrue."
A fresh wave of warm cookies washed over her face, tempting her. Just one lick, that was all she wanted.
Instead, she bit down on her tongue. "I said words?"
Honestly, how could she expect to think straight when he smelled so dangerous and enticing?
"You said I don't trust anyone." There was raspiness in his voice. "That is not true." He shook off his thoughts before raising his bloodshot eyes to his. "I trusted you."
Her cheeks burned, much to her dismay. She had never heard the word 'trust' uttered with such disgust before.
"Obviously, I misjudged. It won't happen again," he added coldly before looking away.
Something shifted at that moment. She felt the connection between them breaking. As much as she hated him, she knew that they had a connection. Actually, it was at that moment she clearly noticed it. With great determination, he pulled away from her physically.
He must have been high. When did he trust her? His walls were always up. She had seen it constantly... with other people. Hell, she was her own worst enemy most of the time. Apart from her family, that is. Why on earth would he just recklessly trust someone like that without at least warning them?
She had been walking alone all her life without the expectations of others... at least winning them... therefore, this was a great responsibility that had fallen on her without her knowledge.
It made no sense but she couldn't shake the big ball of guilt that was lodged deep in the pit of her stomach. She glanced over at him, her face solemn. He had managed to sit upright beside her, which was no easy accomplishment if his body was functioning as badly as hers.
She had thought Mo Qingchen's suits would make him more handsome and indeed it did make him look good, but she realized something while she watched him struggle to straighten his tie. They were his armor. Those suits exuded power and control. He, who thought those necessities had abandoned it to wear his casual clothes, probably because he tried his best to look approachable by his employees. As much as his disposition could allow.
The man didn't have a friend in the world. If word around town was right, he didn't have a good relationship with his father and brother either, leaving his mother and sister. His mother was not much talked about in the circles, so Yun Qian Meng didn't know much about the woman, but she knew Mo Yize on a personal basis. Even if Mo Qingchen liked his sister, he wouldn't be too close to someone who was doing almost nothing with their life than lead one of debauchery.
Friends. Did she have friends? She asked herself. Yes, those people she had met and known on a personal basis. She did think of them as friends but no one she could implicitly trust with her life. She wanted to know why both of them deprived themselves of such a basic human need.
She opened her mouth to ask him just that but found herself saying something else. "I'm sorry," the words tumbled out from her lips. Two tiny words were spoken with such sincerity that it surprised her.
She wasn't the type of person who apologized often. It was so rare that she felt something was her fault. She was a top-notch excuse maker and usually very good at not making mistakes. Usually, those words sounded strange on her lips, but this time they didn't. Honestly, they sounded horribly inadequate.
He gave her a detached nod before turning his attention to the window.
They rode in silence the rest of the way. She spent the time trying to piece together exactly what had happened. Marcus loved drugs like precious little life enhancers.
If someone had a headache, he would hand them ecstasy instead of medicine. He really meant no harm by it, but she had known never to accept any sort of pills or powders from him. She just never thought that a plate of freaking cookies would do this to her. She hadn't imagined that Marcus would drug her and Mo Qingchen with phallic-shaped treats.
The atmosphere in the car was intense, to say the least. She had no idea how they made it to the car and she couldn't ask the man beside her either.
She vaguely remembered Angel standing behind her and suspected that she had helped them. Yun Qian Meng looked for her purse and found it under her knee. She pulled out her phone to check the time. Five-thirty in the morning.
She wondered if she would be awake for her work calls and appointments the next day. She also wondered if Mo Qingchen would let her stay in his house. She hadn't intentionally drugged him.
She would never do such a thing.
Once he got a few hours of sleep and regained control of his nervous system, he would realize that. And he would let her live in his house. That way, she could save a lot of money.
