Chapter 125: Chapter 122: Interlude in Apollon
Apollon was held up well by an iron fist. Ever since its owner and leader Eugene hall had left the place behind and had joined Deep Down Town as an adventurer, the lordship of the city had gone in the hands of its current and new ruler, Lily.
The plan was to keep people from chasing him for Eugene. By letting Lily hold the title of the Lord, he had done multiple things.
He had firstly made it easier for people who had evil intentions to target Apollon, thus tying down the most annoying and bothersome of his possible pursuant, Keith down to the town to be forced to protect Lily at all times.
And second, by making it so that only Lily's signature or stamp could keep the place moving, he had ensured that Maria, the older and naturally more competent of the two when it came it such matters be held down as well.
All they would need was one missed sign and one evil man to make sure that all that Eugene and the others had worked for would go down the drain.
By doing so, he had also achieved a third purpose.
Which was to make Lily grow into a stronger and more capable person.
He had thought that with this, he would be able to bring Lily, Maria and Keith down all at once and they would be unable to chase after or look for him.
Far too careless, far too heartless, the man who had left behind the people who saw him as their entire world thought less of how they would feel about it and more about how he could stop them from chasing after him.
A scumbag amongst scumbags.
Unfortunately, his plans did not work as well as he wanted them to.
"Hey, just let me meet with the regent here!"
A man screamed at the mayor of the town by slamming papers on the desk.
"Do you see this? This much money for the investment and you dare to refuse it? Are you a mayor or a noble, what do you think of yourself?"
Jerry, a businessman working for a merchant in the north named Magmara had appeared here to take over a booming new town. All they had to do was largely invest in the place, they had an abundance of money.
It was a way to take control over a place just like what Eugene had planned. By making them all connected to his enterprise, he would end up holding power greater than what the town could control.
If they toppled, then the town would too. And so, the lordship of the town would have no choice but to be a biotch for the man and his every whim.
Magmara had gained control over a few other places just like this, and Jerry was his best negotiator whenever he needed to present vile contracts.
Far too many people fell for greed and shortsightedness.
Jerry had come prepared to wreck some havoc, but from the moment he had heard that the lord of the town was out and that there was only a young girl not even twenty yet acting as a regent, he couldn't help but laugh at the situation.
"Our lord has told us to refuse all such kinds of offers," the old mayor said.
Jerry slammed his hand on the table, the cups of tea resting near the corner trembled but stopped before they could fall down.
Jerry leaned ahead and growled.
"Do you know who sir Magmara is? He's famous all over the north. Lines of caravans from the Mirxa fief travel under him and reach the edges of the Fonias Duchy, even the lord of Fonias has met him personally."
Jerry leaned ahead.
"Some random bastard who was given the title of lord for the only virtue of being Marquis Hall's son can't go against a man endorsed by the duke, do you understand?"
The wimpy old man had just been a village head on the throes of death just three years back, what was he to do against such an aggressive person?
The old man quaked and shook his head.
"Look, I don't know about that. I was just told to do…"
"Haah, fine." Jerry reached into his pockets and pulled out an envelope. He slid it across the table and sighed, kicking his legs up.
"I can't believe cancer like you rots all good places. So what if a place burns down as long as I get my profit, you all have that mindset."
The old mayor looked inside the envelope and smiled.
The mayor was corrupt!
"I'll talk to the regent and get you a meeting, just give me a bit."
"Ten minutes," Jerry said. "Go."
"Yes, I'll try if the regent is free."
Jerry could only sigh as he watched the mayor step out. His eyes fell on all the art pieces around, a gramophone on the other table.
He placed a disc in it and soon enough, a new tune started playing.
A sigh of admiration left the man.
This place was doing better than he had initially assumed.
It seemed to have potential. The moment he had stepped inside and had looked at the riches they had to display, he was shocked.
A place like this would have been tough to get into their trap. And even if they did, they would have to keep the talent that made it in their grasp to ensure its smooth operation.
Jerry remembered well how he had once visited a restaurant almost weekly to eat its pasta, he loved it to bits, it was a phenomenal dish that everyone needed to eat. But before that recognition could come about, the head chef had decided to leave.
He had said he'll leave the recipe and there was nothing to worry about, but it never tasted the same.
The pasta, was lost with the chef.
He didn't want to see a similar outcome with this place. He had grown fond of the theaters and the music, the streets and performers, the food and the joy.
The room's door opened.
"Our regent will you see now."
It was go time.
