Chapter 125: Strange Conversations
Alvin looked at Linfel and couldn't help but ask. "Ahem... Linfel, how about you use your little trick to get us some Ventis Credits?"
Linfel immediately refused. "First, that kills the purpose of the Ventis Sect's training, which is to get you to be able to soar on your own. Second, if I do such a thing here, I will most likely be caught."
"Caught?" Alvin didn't expect that. "How?"
Linfel shrugged. "The Ventis Sect Network, which uses Ventis Credit, is a lot smaller than the Universe's Universal Credits. If Ventis Credits suddenly start disappearing, all the Ventis Sect needs to do is follow the Credits. Do you think the Ventis Sect can't check its own system? Come on..."
Alvin scratched the back of his head. "It's indeed not worth the risk..."
Milia sighed. "Alright. Using Linfel's trick doesn't work. Killing... I don't think I'm ready for that yet. Different from the war, this is just indiscriminate slaughter for money.
I don't think Ventis Credits is a good enough reason for me to go out and start killing people. As for the contractors..."
"Contractors are always preying on poor Maguses and Familiars like us. That was pretty common in my time," Linfel explained. "Well, at least there are the safe heavens called cities here in Ventis Sect. However, it doesn't mean all contracts are bad. There are quite a few that are dangerous but are not ethically wrong or anything." Linfel then opened one of the contracts he found.
-Looking for Maguses or Familiars to collect Magic Energy Cores of Level Four or higher Magic Beasts in the Tromhue Magic Beast Forest. Ten Level Four Cores per one Ventis Credit. Numbers don't matter. We will buy everything you have.-
"See?" Linfel commented.
Milia and Alvin took a deep breath. Level Four Cores are obviously Level Four Magic Beasts. And you need ten cores to gain a single credit. That seemed even more risky. "Let's... continue to look into the contractors."
*Pin!*
Suddenly, Linfel's group MCOMs received a message in their Ventis Sect App. After opening it, they felt relieved.
-According to Rule 178.3, all new disciples will receive 10 Ventis Credits once they finish their registration. Please check your balances in the Sect's App.-
Nori and Linfel were considered independent Familiars, so they also got 10 credits each. That put their group with a grand total of 40 Ventis Credits, which would be enough to rent a common room in Gertei City, the same city they are at the moment.
Alvin touched his belly, feeling quite hungry. "I didn't want to bring it out. But now that we have some credits, how about we go eat something. We haven't eaten anything since we arrived in this place, and Maguses consume especially a lot of energy."
Milia agreed, and they moved to the restaurant. Meanwhile, Linfel continued to look into the thousands of contracts. Suddenly, one contract caught his attention, so he showed it to Alvin and Milia, who were having lunch.
-Magic Beast Territory Delivery. Any Magus or Familiar accepted. We are looking for disciples willing to bring our wares to the settlements in various Magic Beast Territories around the planet. Look for one of our Dinval Delivery branches in any Ventis Sect City.-
-Payment: 05 Ventis Sect Credit for every successful delivery.-
Alvin was impressed by the huge pay. "That's quite a lot. That probably means we would take a few days to get to deliver whatever they want us to."
"Maybe," Linfel nodded. "However, we can also take Magic Beast Material Contracts and complete these contracts in the meantime. A single Contract doesn't seem to be enough for us to sustain ourselves. That's the trick here. With so many Contracts, we can take several at once."
"I see..." Alvin and Milia nodded.
Nori, on the other hand, was looking for something else. "Oh! There are really a lot of them. However, they are all 30 credits at the very least."
-Seventh District-
-One Room and One Toilet-
-30 Credits per month-
"30 credits..." Alvin felt a pain in his heart. And that's not counting other expenses. "Now I know why my father kept complaining about bills."
Nori then approached Linfel and Alvin before extending his hand. "Alright, give me."
"Give what?"
"Your Ventis Credits, idiots. We need to rent a room to stay," Nori explained.
Alvin and Milia looked at each other and finally remembered a small detail. "Does that mean we will live together...?"
"As if!" Nori snorted. "I will rent a room for Milia; you two find something else."
"Keep dreaming!" Linfel immediately refused. "My credits are mine. I don't mind sharing a room, but I'm absolutely not handing over my Credits for nothing."
"That's enough, Nori," Milia intervened. "Alvin, Linfel, let's share the room. We truly can't stay on the streets."
"But..." Nori obviously didn't like the idea of having Milia and Alvin in the same room.
"I have decided already!" Milia gave no room for discussion. Besides, it wasn't like she was completely against the idea. At least her subconscious... or all the little Milias... seemed to already have made their decisions...
Linfel had no problem if that was the case. "Then let's go get it."
The seventh district was one of the cheapest in the entire Gertei City. That also made it quite crowded... Well, who are we fooling here? That was almost the same as the slums but with a room for yourself. In the end, they decided to have Linfel hold their credits and pay for the room.
The room was as basic as it could be. One bed, one small toilet and, a simple washing machine, and a table. No kitchen or anything like that.
Alvin looked at Milia, feeling a little embarrassed. Milia was no different, and that irritated Nori. Seeing that, Alvin forced himself to think about something to talk. "Now that I think about it, we have one more problem..."
"Which is?" Linfel asked, checking the room and completely oblivious to the mood in the air.
"Clothes..." Alvin commented while looking at his attire. "We went to get the Ventis Sect Test, expecting to return to our planet afterward. The clothes we have on us at the moment... are literally the only clothes we have at all..."
As a man, Alvin wasn't that bothered. Milia, however, immediately forgot about the sharing-the-room-with-Avin issue. She absolutely didn't want to keep wearing that same clothes. Milia was, after all, a member of the Frondor Family. She never had to worry about such things.
Linfel had to admit Alvin was right. "Can't you just wash your clothes and reuse them? There is a washing machine right there, you know?"
"Well, we can..." Alvin glanced at Milia. "But how will we do it without a spare to use in the meantime?"
"What kind of question is that? Just get naked and get over with it," Linfel answered as if it was the most common thing in the world.
"As if I would get naked in front of you!" Milia obviously got mad and all red again, imagining the situation.
Linfel didn't seem to care. "Whatever. Just go to the toilet, partially close the door, and pass the clothes to Alvin or Nori to put in the washing machine. See? Easy! You just have to wait for it to be ready.
You can even take a shower in the meantime. Why are humans always this complicated?"
He then remembered something. "Oh, right! We need other things. There is no electricity or running water. From what I'm seeing here, they also use Ventis Credits and can be turned on instantly once paid for. Both cost 01 Ventis Credit per day.
With the room and the meal you had earlier, we already spent 32 of the 40 credits we had available."
Linfel then pointed to the toilet. "I don't really care, but you humans seem to do, so we also need soap and all that shit. Milia is a woman, so she obviously need those things that women use to deal with their periods, right? They also cost Ventis Credits."
Milia felt like dying. Did he have to mention it out loud? "I... will think about something."
"Linfel, you are making my master uncomfortable!" Nori complained.
"What? Does soap make her uncomfortable? I thought humans liked to be clean... Sorry, my mistake. Forget the soap," Linfel answered, relieved he would be able to save more Ventis Credits.
"Not the soap, idiot!" Nori complained. "The periods! My master periods are very regular, but you don't need to mention them."
Milia felt like dying already.
As for Linfel, he was as confused as ever. "Why would she feel uncomfortable about periods? That is a vital mechanism for human reproduction. It would be much worse if she didn't have them. After all, that would mean she is infertile... Wait!
Milia, could it be you are infertile? Alvin, you won't be able to pass you genes forward like that."
*Bang!*
Milia finally snapped and tried to kick Linfel. Too bad Linfel was much faster, so he easily dodged, so she ended up hitting the floor and cracking it. "Shut up! I'm fertile! Very fertile! Just stop talking about it already!"
Alvin agreed, looking away and trying to not think about 'reproduction' with Milia. "She is right. Just let it go for now."
Linfel nodded. "Fine... but they still cost Ventis Credit, so you won't be able to run from this. Anyway, we just lost two credits."
"What?!" Everyone was taken aback. "How?!"
Linfel opened his MCOM and showed the message.
-For damaging the room, you will be fined in two Ventis Credits. A contractor will be with you shortly to fix the damage.-
Milia was already crying. "That was your fault!"
"Sigh..." Linfel finally gave up. "Alright, no more periods. We have 06 Ventis Credits remaining. What do you want to do first?"
