Huo Chen looked solemn in his military uniform. His gestures told a lot even when he was facing the back to Wen He. Lu Zhaoyang looked worried and muttered something as she stood next to him.
“H-Huo Chen!” It took Wen He a few moments before she called out his name.
The man did not turn his head back whereas Zhaoyang was smiling.
“Wen He, get over here.”
Wen He was then dragged to the side, “Could you please tell him to go home. He hasn’t eaten for the whole day. He would pass out anytime soon.” The statement was worrying to Wen He’s ears. She gave a glance at Huo Chen’s back while whispering, “What can I do when you can’t even move him?”
“Don’t worry,” said Zhaoyang, tapping Wen He’s palm, “You can do it.”
“...” Wen He returned with a look before dragging her steps forward. She surveyed his expressionless face with bloodshot eyes.
“Huo Chen,” Wen He initiated as she viewed the frozen statue before the tombstone under the drizzle.
She wanted to comfort him but she was out of words. They had experienced a lot together while witnessing countless deaths yet they could not even stay still when their precious ones left the world.
“I know nothing I said would convince you to move on. I will say it, regardless. People die one day, Huo Chen. You have to move on,” she sighed, “Do you remember how worried your mother was before we departed to Golden Triangle? Now you have returned safely. She must be proud. If you choose to hurt yourself because of her, how would your mother think in the other world? Will she be able to rest in peace?”
Huo Chen did not reply. His eyes were soulless.
Wen He pulled his sleeve, “The best way to repay your mother is to live a proper life.”
“...” It was beyond comprehension, the pain of not being able to repay parents because they died.
Wen He no longer spoke. She stood quietly with Huo Chen before his mother’s tomb. Old Mrs. Huo smiled pleasantly in the photo as tears welled up Wen He’s eyes.
Zhaoyang frowned as she wondered what she could do. Her waists were then seized by a giant arm. It was Huo Yunting as she turned her head behind. Looking into his calm eyes, she shook her head, “We should have told him immediately, like at least, he could see his mother away.”
“It’s my fault,” said Huo Yunting regretfully. “I failed to protect her.” His words rang softly. “Let’s go. He needs some time alone.”
“Okay...” Then they left.
Both Huo Chen and Wen He were still like a statue for the next hour.
Huo Chen finally moved at the edge of Wen He’s breakdown. He began striding towards the outside world like a rolling rock down a slope, as Wen He quickly followed.
Song Shou was anticipating his commander in the car. Out of courtesy, Wen He gave him a nod.
“Sir!” Song Shou came towards Huo Chen who did not respond to his greeting and just went into the car. Wen He sat next to the man as they were transported to the apartment near the camp. The janitor lady chuckled the moment she saw Wen He behind the general. “You’re finally back!”
Wen He nodded at her friendly welcome as they headed to Huo Chen’s reading room immediately.
Huo Chen’s voice was hoarse as he spoke finally, “What are you doing here?” He glared at her, “If you are here to ask for your divorce, we will do it next time.”
“Well, next time it is then. That’s not my point of being here.”
