Chapter 272 A Completely Different Direction 4
Chapter 272 A Completely Different Direction 4
Lukas was someone who looked at the world in simple ways.
Most people looked out for themselves and if a person were to do something, even if it seemed like a good thing, then they would benefit from it—even if it was just the feeling of satisfaction that was associated with it.
It wasn't a necessarily wrong way to live life in his opinion, but it did propose something disturbing.
At least for the case with Lux and the Carmilla House.
Why didn't Lux simply offer to buy the Blood Gourd?
"Is it… unavailable?" Lukas slowly asked.
Idris and Iolathane Durand didn't answer him all at once and instead the two shared a look.
"That is not something we can ascertain. Perhaps the city of Lux is not aware that it can be bought. The House of Carmilla has far more connections than they do, so they might have contacts that will get them the Blood Gourd even if it's not available in the market," Idris said.
Lukas thought it sounded like an excuse.
It had to be some excuse that was covering up the back of the Carmilla House… and yet Lukas was also fatigued with everything.
'I've been suspicious of the Carmilla House and they do not strike me well as people like the Durand House who keep their word at all costs. I want to listen to my gut feeling, it hasn't let me down—no, it had let me down before.'
The expression on Lukas' face was conflicted, but then he shook his head and smiled.
"Please proceed with trying to obtain the Blood Gourd still. You speak highly of what the Carmilla House specializes in, but I can assure you that if you do not try then there is no reason or purpose to how you go about and do things."
"What?" Iolathane frowned.
"A fish says that it cannot fly and so it does not try. A bird does not try to swim because it knows that it cannot… I feel like my analogy is slipping away, but we are not animals restrained to do certain things and are blocked off from doing another thing. Even if Carmilla House is great with contacts and connections, it does not mean that the Durand House will automatically fail and do terribly if they tried. So please go ahead and get me Blood Gourd, you won't know if you'll succeed if you give up right now."
"That is… most convincing," Idris said.
Lukas let out a tired grin and knew that it wasn't exactly the truth when Idris said he was convincing but the man was willing to listen to his words.
'I don't have any proof yet and what Durand House says about Blood Gourd not being available in the market but available for the Carmilla House may ring true—but what are the chances if they're wrong? I can't let them simply dictate our times just because they want to.'
Lukas knew that this placed him at odds with Stacy and Alexei—they had been elevated as dis Vardokens—but far better to do what he can now than let his chances be missed.
'It makes sense for the Carmilla House to keep their word and maintain friendly relations with Vardokens, but I think they're lying. There's a lot of lies and secrets in the city of Nyx and I will not stand for it—I won't allow such things to hold me back from what I really want to do.' Lukas thought as he remembered Lily.
His shoulders sank a little and weariness seeped into his bones.
'All I wanted to do when I first purchased Vampire Nightlife is to relax and pretend that I have a good life. Now that I am within the game… it still feels like some sort of grinding mechanism is in place. I don't like it. These politics, these games to determine who is above and who is below is getting tiresome. I have to get through all of this tough stuff before I'm allowed to go back to easier days.'
At the end of the day, Lukas just wanted to go back home—and though it seemed impossible to truly go back 'home' 'home' where his human body was, he also found and managed to find it with the two people who loved and accepted him.
"You're easily lost in thoughts." Iolathane's voice spoke directly in Lukas' ear.
Lukas' eyes widened and he quickly spun around to meet Iolathane face to face and nearby him. She had stood up and walked beside him, arms crossed over her chest in a disappointed way.
Her dark blue hair swished against her side and hip, golden eyes boring into his soul.
"That's—where's your father?"
"He was already done with his meal and was just waiting for what you wanted. You've promised us a wealth of information, but I think that he wishes to help with the situation with your girlfriend hence why he is acting this way."
"Oh. He is… he is a good man," Lukas said.
"Do you really think so?" Iolathane asked.
"Why wouldn't I think that way? He is doing something because he feels sympathy for my girlfriend and that of other people who got themselves poisoned, right?"
"And so you are also here and with the purpose of helping others as well, though but I do not think that you see yourself as a good person, does it?"
"I'm motivated by my own things…"
"And that does not count as good?"
"People are good when they are selfless, helpful and willing to go beyond the odds to do something that truly requires bravery and courage or something that does not benefit them in anyway. I'm not like that."
"I think some people might say otherwise, but you are free to decide however you wish," Iolathane frowned. She couldn't get a proper read on Lukas and it was making her confused.
"Yeah, that's what I've had in mind all this time, Miss Iolathane." Lukas placed the glass on the dinner table. "I think it's time for me to go."
Iolathane was honestly at a loss.
