Chapter 37: So, The Credit Is Due To Ajaf
Chapter 37: So, The Credit Is Due To Ajaf
The soft and gentle moonlight quietly filled the little dorm through the windows.
The faint virtual scroll looked even holier under the moonlight.
Aileen sat next to her bed and looked at the window with her head tilted to a side. There were two pots of mallows by the window, one was a spiral-leaf and the other was a broadleaf.
She asked for their seeds the very moment that Mister had cultivated those two mallows successfully and planted them in front of the window-sill. She simply wanted to plant them as they made her feel very grounded and comfortable whenever she saw them after waking up.
That was the first time for her to feel like that after her mother passed away.
She retrieved her gaze and looked toward the virtual scroll.
"Thank you, Lady Aileen. You're such a life-saver!"
"Big Sister Aileen, could I learn about wood-spirit magic? I heard that it's a special magic system. Is it very difficult to learn?"
"There are people dying of diarrhea caused by mallows in our town every winter. I guess there won't be anyone dying of hunger again this year. On behalf of my town, I thank you, Lady Aileen."
Aileen smiled after reading those comments.
She hesitated for a moment before turning on the comment section and begin to edit on the message from the host:
[Thank you all for your concerns. I hope to clarify two things:
Firstly, although the non-toxic mallow was cultivated by me, the mutagenesis of these two types of mallows were actually completed by my instructor, Mister Ajaf.
Secondly, please do not thank me, everyone. I am not as good as you say. All this credit is due to Mister Ajaf. It is he who taught me the wood-spirit magic's most esoteric knowledge. All this is thanks to him.
In addition, I want to share a secret with all of you. Mister Ajaf has been studying and improving the main crops, which include black grain, corn, millet and rice and several of them have made breakthroughs. I can't share the details but I can say that it wouldn't be a problem for their yield per hectare to double.
To me, Mister Ajaf is the real hero. He is the Deity of Agriculture!
The mallow was a wild vegetable that Mister didn't care for. That is why it was used by me, a mere mage apprentice, to practice. I was only lucky to have achieved some results, so please don't shower me with praises anymore!
Mister is correct to say that food is the paramount necessity of all people. Filling bellies is the way to go.
I believe no one will have the need to eat mallows for long. It will become livestock feed and I really look forward to that day!]
After editing, Aileen read through it again carefully to make sure there were no mistakes before hitting the "Confirm" button.
She felt an instant relief as soon as she hit the "Confirm" button. She felt as if a weight had been lifted off her chest!
Recently, her state of mind had been hit hard.
From receiving the purple snow wood magic wand; to becoming Mister Ajaf's assistant; to receiving the wood-spirit magical knowledge that was completely different from the Empire's; to March bullying her and Mister Ajaf's fury; and finally, to her becoming famous in the current situation.
Frankly speaking, if she hadn't been through so much hardship since young and built a resilient character, her demeanor would have been altered by those incidents, with everything going to her head in the end.
It was only until she wrote that statement that she realized how all those things happened because of Mister Ajaf. He gave her everything she currently had.
She would only suffer if she allowed herself to get caught up in it.
It was better for her to remain as a simple mage apprentice so she could follow after Mister, learn about wood-spirit magic diligently and hope that one day she could have the ability to care for the world like Mister!
After that, she turned off the Internet and lay down on her soft couch as she looked at the mallows on her windowsill. Then, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
That night, she had an exceptionally good rest.
In her dream, her mother chopped the broadleaf mallow up finely, mixed it up with the black grain and made a big pot of gnocchi soup. It was delicious; she couldn't eat another bite.
However, Aileen didn't know that the Queville Empire's Internet was plunged into shock because of her words while she slept soundly. Many people couldn't even fall asleep that night.
A toast in unison could be heard from the only mercenary tavern in Buck Town, "To the ever beautiful Lady Aileen!"
"Bang!"
"Oh ho"
"Hail Lady Aileen!"
Sounds of glasses clashing, howling and mumbling could be heard after the toast.
If one were to look closer, the majority of the people toasting were a group of mercenaries.
It wasn't easy to earn the respect of that group of people!
But Aileen had done it.
In the eyes of the people, mercenaries represented chaos, freedom, unruliness, rebellion, always on the road and profit-driven
But most people didn't know that mercenaries were also humans and most of them were used to be farmers.
Nobody would want to lead a dangerous life if not driven by despair.
It was precisely because they used to be farmers, they knew about a farmer's hardships very well and understood the importance of the mallow.
It was a wild vegetable that saved lives, even though it was poisonous.
But then a mage apprentice had removed its toxins, so what did that imply?
"Woah!"
Someone stood suddenly and knocked over the table, chairs and glasses.
But he couldn't care about them as he shouted with a deep blush, "Quick, quick, quick, Aileen Aileen"
"What's going on with Aileen?"
"Hahaha. It only takes one lousy beer to make you stutter, Gael?"
The group of mercenaries teased him.
Gael continued to blush deeply. He had to take a moment before he could make himself speak properly, "Aileen S-s-she has just written on her personal space. Come and have a look, quickly"
"What? Aileen has just spoken?"
"Mamma Mia!"
"The great existence from the azure blue star, you are the Master of language and words Oh dear, what comes after this? Damn it, I've drank too much and forgot what to say."
"My heavens. Lady Aileen has indeed left a comment!"
The tavern instantly erupted into an uproar.
Some of them had drank so much that they couldn't even recite the prayers
Others logged onto the Internet in a panic, but they couldn't find Aileen's personal space since they weren't familiar with the features.
There were also those illiterate guys who simply crowded next to the people who summoned the Internet scroll
"Aye aye. What did Lady Aileen say? Read it for me, please?"
Those who were illiterate were hurrying those who could read.
"Why are you pressing me? Let me finish reading it first!"
"Mamma Mia. I was wondering how did Aileen, a mage apprentice, create the non-toxic mallow So there was an expert behind her."
"Does anyone know who Ajaf is?'
"I remember him. Is he that lord mage who summoned the giants to avenge Aileen?"
"Yes, yes, yes. That's him!"
"Oh my heavens. So, Lady Aileen is just Ajaf's student. Ajaf is the real hero!"
"According to Lady Aileen, our grain yield could double in the future?"
"Seems like it!"
"It has to be. Even a mage apprentice was able to remove the toxins from the mallow and come up with two types of it. The instructor behind her must be even more formidable!"
"If what Lady Aileen said is true, then Ajaf could really be called the Deity of Agriculture!"
"Lord Ajaf is really worthy of respect. Lady Aileen said she had only cultivated the non-toxic mallow and it was Lord Ajaf who cultivated the spiral-leaf and the broadleaf mallows. But he gave all the credit to Aileen. It's really Aileen's good fortune that she could meet an instructor like him!"
"That's very true. I remember how my mentor snatched all the credit when I was an apprentice. There are really very few mentors who would give their apprentices credit for their work."
"Aiyah. What's going on? Don't chat among yourselves first. Tell me about it, please?"
The literate ones had already started to discuss among themselves while the illiterate ones were still puzzled.
The tavern was in a complete uproar at the moment.
Scenes like that were taking place all across the country.
Ajaf's name was going to be famous throughout the Queville Empire!
