Chapter 629: Chapter 0629: Xiang Liu (Seeking Subscriptions)

Dossier Room.

“Phew…”

Xu Changqing let out a long sigh, putting aside a volume of the dossier.

From between the lines, he seemed to smell the stench of blood.

Although he had long known about the creepy and terrifying demons and monsters from the books in his master’s Scripture Repository, how could they compare to these firsthand experiences?

Through reading, he came to know about various incidents of wanton atrocities by demonic beasts and the horrifying methods of killing used by certain ghostly beings.

‘In such an environment, it’s quite detrimental to the human body…’

Xu Changqing glanced at the little clerk beside him. Noticing his swollen eyes with bloodshot veins, he appeared to have not slept well in a long time. He said, “You go first, I’ll continue reading.”

“Yes.” The little clerk bowed and left.

Xu Changqing rested his hand on two volumes of dossiers.

The first one was titled ‘Zhou Quan’s Disappearance Case’!

In this world filled with the reappearance of demons and monsters, such disappearances were really too common. Unless there was a massive outbreak, it was difficult to trace the clues. So, written at the end was just a few investigation reports, followed by the words ‘to be resolved’.

“Oh? It seems that Zhou Quan really didn’t tell his confidants?”

A hint of a smile appeared at the corner of Xu Changqing’s mouth, “Or maybe… his confidants dared not reveal the truth. After all, inciting demonic beasts to attack the village would be enough to sentence him to death… What a clever man, I like it…”

He rubbed his fingers, picking up another volume of the dossier with a solemn expression:

“Section Wuxu 36 – Three years in the Era of Auspiciousness, summer, a case reported by Xiaozhai Village and others regarding missing girls… confirmed to be for Shuangxuan Immortal’s cultivation… not subject to investigation… Notes: Matters related to Shuangxuan Immortal are confidential documents stored in the Earth Room.”

This was a file written by Zhou Quan, containing details of the investigation into the missing girls from Xiaozhai Village that day.

“Shuangxuan Immortal, not subject to investigation?”

Xu Changqing let out a cold huff, his knuckles turning some shade of white griping the document.

There were also secret grades in the dossier room, divided into Heaven, Earth, Xuan and Huang. Demon Captains ranked seventh or above had access to all ‘Heaven’ level and below dossiers. Vice captains could view ‘Earth’ level dossiers; Inspectors could view ‘Xuan’ level and below; and for mundane workers, there were only ‘Huang’ level public information available.

Xu Changqing stood up and walked towards the door labeled ‘Earth’.

This was proprietary information that even the clerk could not extract prior, he would have to read it onsite.

As he touched the door, he felt a restrictive power causing his palm to quiver slightly.

It was as if some kind of beast was buried inside, continuously slamming against the door.

Xu Changqing thought for a moment before taking out his waist plate. At this moment, a bright light bloomed from the plate, reducing the resistance as it shined on the door.

He entered the secret room. Looking at the scrolls displayed on the wooden shelves, he felt a strange sensation within. “Some things… are sealed for the betterment of the ordinary folks. The contents of these dossiers… I am afraid that going over them too much would drive one insane.”

Xu Changqing looked around and picked up a scroll, unfolding it to read.

The first image he encountered was a giant blue tentacle beast. It was huge in size, its tentacles resembled serpents, with what appeared to be eyes and an oral apparatus growing on their tips.

The artist had skilfully captured the monster’s malicious and distorted features.

“Just as I thought, not something the average person should see.”

Xu Changqing looked towards the text that followed, “In the second year of the Era of Auspiciousness, evidence of the ‘Son of Xiang Liu’ was found in Lingzhou. The Imperial Court ordered Shuangxuan, Linfeng and other immortals to investigate… All city demon bureaus cooperated, and orders were issued to the hands of each Vice Captain.”

“Notes: Information about the Demonic God ‘Xiang Liu’ is classified as ‘Heaven level’, only Demon Captains ranked seventh or above are allowed access.”

“Xiang Liu?”

A voice from Su Lu echoed in his mind.

“Old man… Do you know this monster?” Xu Changqing assumed that he should, considering how mysterious the old man was.

“I’ve only heard a legend, Xiang Liu is a nine-headed serpent, a man-eater, wherever it goes… it turns into a state of marsh… it seems it does not look like this… so, the Son of Xiang Liu…”

Su Lu was at a loss for words. Are you telling me, this is the son of Xiang Liu? It’s clearly a tentacle monster, okay?

But oddly enough, it did seem to pair well with the theme of the abyss.

‘And…. Where it goes, is transformed into a state of marsh? Water beast, tentacle… Have I finally come across my nemesis, since I’m a fake Li Ghost?’

‘And within the mythological legends, there are other similar monsters, like Jiuying, Jiufeng… they also have the style of the Evil God, alas… I can’t bear to look.’

But Xu Changqing didn’t care about that all. Instead, he closed the dossier and murmured with his eyes closed: “I understand now, everything is clear.”

“The Son of Xiang Liu is an extremely powerful ‘strange entity’. The Imperial Court commanded the immortals to investigate it… They arrived near Qingyang City of Heize Mansion, found the monster and battled with it… Shuangxuan Immortal was defeated, seriously injured and he fell near Xiaozhai Village, where he had to carry out a Corpse Dissecting to heal his wounds …”

“This is the source of the disaster in the village!”

In this world, weakness is a sin!

The healing of a powerful person almost destroyed several nearby villages!

Just as an unintentional step could squash an ant to death, they remained indifferent.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

“Knowing who your enemies are, have you decided on vengeance?”

Su Lu asked.

“Shuangxuan Immortal deserves to die, same goes for Xiang Liu’s son!”

Xu Changqing clenched his fists: “Even if I am just dust in their eyes today, one day, I will personally obtain justice for the blood debt of Xiaozhai Village!”

“I suggest you’d better not even think about it before fulfilling your cultivation potential.”

Su Lu reminded him.

“I understand my priorities, it won’t become my mental demon,”

Xu Changqing calmly answered.

At that moment, Pan Shu’s anxious voice echoed, “Brother Xu, something terrible has happened!”

“Hmm?”

Xu Changqing walked out of the Earth Room and saw a flustered Pan Shu: “What happened?”

“I just received an emergency message from Mr. Jiang… The case of the resentful spirits, there seems to be a really high danger level!”

Pan Shu answered with a somber expression.

Resentful spirits fell into the ‘ghost’ category among all sorts of demons and monsters. Most were some forms of evil spirits, specializing in various strange methods of killing.

They were somewhat similar to the cursed spirits of the Main World, yet weaker and did not possess immortal characteristics.

Nevertheless, due to their mysterious abilities, even the most powerful could accidentally fall prey to them.

‘Looks like… I must take immediate action?’

Xu Changqing’s expression turned serious: “Who are currently at the Demon Bureau?”

“Apart from you and me for vice captains, there are four inspectors; the rest… sending them would be just sending them to their deaths.”

Pan Shu replied with a gloomy look.

“Let me prepare, and I’ll depart immediately. Where is the case file?”

Xu Changqing hastily asked.

Following the teachings of the old man, the most important thing to survive in various cases involving ghosts was to analyze the clues and find the pattern!

“It’s right here. We can talk as we go.”

Pan Shu shoved a bright red dossier into Xu Changqing’s hand: “But… this resentful spirit is powerful. If we’re too late to rescue and the chief officer dies, we will all be punished…”

‘Listening to him, it seems like he seems to be reluctant to go… A resentful spirit? Shitou is a good hand at dealing with them.’

Xu Changqing took the dossier, deep in thought.
