Chapter 44: Wicked Father, Virtuous Son
44 Chapter 44: Wicked Father, Virtuous Son
After three hours, Sam had finished analyzing the entire academy.
"It's done," Sam said to Lucy as the magic circle shrank to the size of a compact disc, moving towards him and landing on his palm.
The same magic circle appeared in his pupils as he absorbed everything his magic had picked up about the academy.
Every existing spell or remnant of past magic in the academy walls, the intricate pathways of energy flow, and various other fascinating details about the academy became an open book to him.
"Did you find out what's wrong with the academy's magic?" Agor asked.
"I found a few anomalies, but none of them should be interfering with the magic. The most notable observation is that, for some reason, mana is moving away from this area, almost as if something scared it off," Sam replied.
"What caused this? Could it have been your attack that destroyed this place?" Agor inquired.
"I don't know... Even with the highest grade of analyzing magic, I couldn't pinpoint the exact cause. But I'm certain the magic itself is intact; something else is causing the interference," Sam said, contemplating the possible causes.
This was a very complex magic created by powerful mages trusted by the founder, Ryuga Tachibana, when the academy was built.
The magic had several critical functions. The primary one was enveloping the academy in a protective barrier that prevented intruders and cloaked the academy in an illusion. Another essential function was the automatic repair of the academy's structures when damaged. This magic drew its power from natural atmospheric energy and resources from the earth to maintain and repair the academy.
"Can you determine what caused this? If the magic fails, it could bring down the academy's entire protection system," Ragnar stated, looking at the crater.
"I will try something"

"Mmm..." Sam thought as he activated his Eyes of Truth ability. His blue eyes glowed brightly, making his pupils stand out in his entire face. His vision transformed, revealing the lines and flows of energy and everything invisible to the normal eye.
"Did you find out what's causing this?" Lucy asked, tugging at his arm.
"I did, and it's very simple to resolve," Sam said, pointing his palm at the crater.
Substances almost invisible to the naked eye shot from the crater to his hand.
It was invisible, but Lucy could sense something moving from the crater to his hand, though she couldn't understand what it was.
"What was that, darling?" Lucy asked, watching Sam absorb something invisible from the crater.
"It's chaos," Sam replied.
"When I used that attack, remnants of that gray energy got stuck in the crater, warding off the mana from flowing properly. This caused the magic to be disrupted."
"Is that supposed to happen?" Lucy asked, her brow furrowed in concern.
"No," Sam said, shaking his head.
"Normally, when we use offensive powers like that, it disrupts the flow of energy in the atmosphere temporarily, but it resolves itself quickly."
"My attack didn't just disrupt the flow; it's been actively preventing the energy from regaining its natural flow. This shouldn't happen."
"Why not?" Lucy asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Energy flow is a natural process. We shouldn't disturb it," Sam explained.
"In fact, energy flow is something that can't usually be disturbed. But my chaos energy seems to have done just that. I guess I still have a lot to learn about my powers," he muttered, watching as the energy flow began to stabilize.
"Hey, you did it! The magic is working again!" Agor exclaimed as he arrived, patting Sam on the back.
"Of course he did, he's my darling," Lucy said with a proud expression, hugging Sam's arm affectionately.
Agor narrowed his eyes.
Even though he knew this was to be expected, he still felt uneasy seeing his granddaughter so close to Sam.
"Granddaughter, why don't you go pack your things while I have a word with your darling here?" Agor suggested with a smile.
"Okay, I'll be back, darling," Lucy said, leaving the area.
"Lucy said it was your idea for her to move in with me," Sam said, turning to Agor.
"I think it's for the best," Agor sighed.
"She's obsessed with you. And when I say obsessed, I mean batshit crazy."
"Whoa, easy. That's your granddaughter you're talking about," Sam said, his expression a mix of confusion and amusement at hearing her grandfather call her crazy.
"Forgive me, I didn't mean to call her crazy. It's just... I love my granddaughter, but she is so hard to deal with," Agor continued, sighing again.
"When she first learned about the prophecy, she got so angry and started to rebel. She didn't like that her future was already decided, and she hated you."
"Is that so? I certainly didn't expect that," Sam said slowly.
"It was only until she met you... Ever since then, everything she does and talks about is all about you. You should see her room; it's filled with pictures of you."
"She even has things like your used clothes and your hair. I couldn't handle it anymore. I think she will be better off if she's with you," Agor said, his eyes pleading.
"Wow, I thought she was only stalking me..." Sam said slowly, followed by a sigh.
He didn't know how to react to this revelation.
For someone who could understand the emotions of those around him, he struggled to understand his own.
After a few moments of thinking, he made up his mind. "I will take care of her," Sam said, nodding with a gracious smile.
"Her obsession with me makes me like her even more."
"Um... okay... I guess, just don't let her go overboard with her obsession," Agor said.
"And try not to break her heart."
"I'm not my father... I won't break her heart," Sam said, his expression turning sour.
"Good... And for the record, I didn't mean to that way... I know you're not like him," Agor said with a pause.
"I didn't realize your relationship with your father turned so horrible."
"Horrible is a weak word to describe my relationship with that wretched man," Sam said, his expression darkening with anger he rarely showed.
Agor decided not to press further, sensing the conversation was veering into sensitive territory that clearly bothered Sam.
"Anyway, I'm not worried that you would break her heart. I know your grandparents and your mother raised you right. I only said that because... she's my granddaughter," Agor said, taking a deep breath.
"Mmm... I'm sorry for raising my voice," Sam said, looking down.
Agor looked at him for a few seconds before placing his hand on Sam's shoulder. "Don't let what your father did to your mother get into your head. You are not your father, and you never will be."
"I know," Sam said, nodding and returning to his usual self.
After a few more exchanges, Sam left the place, leaving Agor alone as he watched the cafeteria repair itself.
"Wicked father, virtuous son," Agor muttered to himself thinking about something to himself.
