Chapter 16 Lessons
Lexus knew that making Aion and Georges continue to spar would be a waste of time since Georges was tired. Still, that served as a lesson for everyone. Even if you could train all morning, unless you pace yourself, you won't last ten minutes on the real thing.
Making Aion spar against the older boys didn't seem fair either, and since they weren't using anything aside from shields and swords, they knew the merits and demerits of those weapons. So, they trained for the rest of the day by themselves. For the rest of the day, Aion noticed that Georges was pretty pissed… at himself for losing to someone younger. For kids, three years of difference was like a decade for adults, after all.
"Do you want to practice together after dinner?" Aion asked Georges when the training session ended, and he made sure that his father wasn't looking.
"Why would I?" Georges asked. "I won't lose again!"
"Sure… whatever," Aion said while he shrugged.
Kids sure were troublesome… truth be told, Aion could train alone, but if he were to help those kids in some way, he had to start slow. The first step failed, but he could use other cards.
After the afternoon lessons and after dinner, Aion went to the garden to train by himself. He couldn't use his room since the movements of a spear were too large. He felt bad about leaving his mother alone, so Aion brought her to watch him. No one used the garden at night anyway.
"You are such a hard worker, Aion," Artemisia said while smiling. "You make me remember my older brother."
"Brother… My uncle?" Aion asked.
"Yes, he was one of the commanders of the armies of our kingdom…" Artemisia said. "While he didn't like to kill people, he trained hard to defeat them without killing. He was criticized a lot for that, but he could shut up everyone's mouth with his strength and skill."
That seemed like a pretty crazy way to fight wars… Still, if one has absolute confidence in their skills and they think that the war can't be lost, defeating enemies just by creeping them was possible. People in medieval times would believe that such a fate was worse than death, but they couldn't complain if they lost, and the enemy only decided to do that much.
In any case, Aion spent a couple of hours practicing the things that he learned before going to bed. The next day, Aion sparred with Elio. He was the third eldest boy while being nine years old. Unlike Georges, he was pretty analytical, and he didn't use any big moves.
Agaisnt an opponent that was too cautious, Aion had the idea of using some feints, and that worked pretty well. He shouldn't think that kind of thing, but fooling kids was rather easy, even though he was one once again. Regardless, after making the enemy think that he would attack with all his might several times, Aion just worked with some small and simple attacks aimed at his legs and then defeated Elio three times.
"Do you want to practice together after dinner?" Aion asked.
Elio just snorted and didn't reply. Aion sighed again; kids sure were hard to deal with… Regardless, Aion trained by himself at night, and the other members of the family noticed that. Still, Lexus didn't say anything. His sons assumed that they could only train when he told them to…
Aion was thinking of practicing with another weapon, but then his father told him to spar with Philip, his second son. Henri and Philip were growing a lot lately, so he couldn't imagine them losing to Aion. Not to mention, they learned a bit from the recent spars that he had. Regardless, Henri was five feet tall, pretty high for a ten year old boy. He was also bulky due to the constant training, and while he had his father's red-brown eyes, he had his mother's light brown hair. Not that such a thing was important at the moment…
When the spar started, Philip assumed his stance and slowly approached… there were no openings in his stance. So, Aion could tell that he would have a hard time hitting him. Unfortunately, while he didn't want to get serious against kids, losing and let them underestimate him would change nothing.
When Philip got close enough to attack, Aion trusted his spear with all his might and forced Philip to raise his shield. The power and the attack of the attack made him flinch for a moment, and in that short window of hesitation, Aion began to run around him.
Philip tried to follow him but doing that while keeping that low and heavy stance was impossible. Still, the very moment he fixed his stance, Aion charged at him and then began to thrust his spear as fast as he could. With each strike, Philip felt his arm vibrating alongside the shield, and he began to be pushed backward. After a while, he grew tired of that and prepared to attack, but then he slightly moved his shield to the side; Aion used that chance and attacked his chest.
Philip groaned in pain since Aion had a hard time controlling his strength while he tried to be as fast as possible. Truth be told, he could have finished things more quickly if he had used Quick Spear.
"If you show your target that you will focus on defense, they can adapt to that," Lexus said. "If you want to surprise them, don't show anything too obvious."
