Chapter 40: Arrogance
"Hey Shun, excited for the game today?" - Kenta looked at his friend who had just arrived in the classroom.
"Huh? Haha yes, we finally get to play a real game, I was getting tired of playing just practice matches." - Shun said with a light laugh.
"Hm, I'm also a bit tired of playing only practice matches. But you know, we're in the Tokyo tournament, there are a lot of strong schools, maybe today's game will be really tough." - Kenta said with a serious, almost worried tone.
Shun looked at his friend with a serious face, as if he was also concerned about that.
"Hahahahahahahahaha!!" - The two friends started laughing at the same time while holding their stomachs, they clearly took Kenta's statement as a joke.
The two boys weren't used to winning, so after winning so many games easily, they built up a lot of confidence. Actually, confidence isn't the right word, they started underestimating their opponents, they became arrogant.
Class started, and Shun was doing his best to pay attention and learn. After all, he was only 14 years old, and even though he only cared about baseball, he still needed to do well on his exams, or else his mother would ground him.
Since his Mental stat increased, Shun found it a bit easier to pay attention in class and learn, but it was still just a bit easier, and his grades were far from good.
He had a theory that if his Mental stat increased even more, there would come a point where he would be able to learn things just by reading it once, but of course, that was just a theory. At the moment, he still didn't know how to increase his Mental stat without using an elixir.
Class ended, and the two friends quickly headed towards the baseball field. They saw some of their teammates gathered next to a bus and headed in their direction.
"Hey, Captain!" - Shun said excitedly when he saw Kazuki. Even though the two no longer formed a battery, he still respected his senpai a lot.
"Shun! Kenta! You didn't forget anything, right? We're leaving as soon as everyone gets here." - The captain spoke to both of them, but his look at Shun made it clear that this message was for him.
"Hahaha! Don't worry, Captain, I prepared everything yesterday! You can count on me for our victory today!" - Shun said confidently as he puffed out his chest and pointed at himself with his thumb.
"Huh? Don't be arrogant, Shun. We can't underestimate our opponents. In the Tokyo tournament, if we lose one game, we're out, we can't let our guard down." - The captain frowned when he heard Shun's statement. It was good to be confident, but he had already noticed that the team's attitude had changed after so many good results.
Especially the three friends, Ren, Shun, and Kenta. These three boys were undoubtedly the reason for these victories, but they were also the ones whose attitudes had changed the most. The captain noticed that these three were starting to underestimate their opponents, acting as if they couldn't lose.
Of course, as a team member, he wanted them not to lose and to become the Kanto champions, but he understood how dangerous this arrogant attitude could be.
"Eh? Hahaha, don't worry, Captain! We won't lose!" - Shun didn't pay much attention to the captain's warning, he really believed there was no way this team could lose.
Captain Kazuki just sighed, he didn't want to argue with Shun just because he said the team would win. The team's morale was high, and he didn't want to affect it right before the game.
"Kentaaaaa!!" - All the team members gathered heard a cheerful female voice. Shun didn't even need to look at the source of the voice to know that it was Mio Shimizu, Kenta's number one fan. He looked to his side where his friend should be, but noticed that Kenta had already run towards Mio.
"I made this for you! It's for good luck in today's game. I'll be watching, so do your best!" - The girl was a bit embarrassed to be watched by a bunch of boys, but she still spoke with confidence. She didn't wait for a response from Kenta and quickly left, embarrassed.
Shun saw his friend holding a bracelet with a silly smile while watching the beautiful figure walking away. Shun looked at Kenta with envy, wondering how someone could be so lucky.
"That lucky bastard!" - Shun was startled to hear a voice saying exactly what he was thinking.
"Ahhh! Ren, you bastard! When did you get here?" - Shun jumped back when he saw a boy with a samurai topknot behind him. Ren had a terrible expression on his face, clearly envious of Kenta.
"Huh? Why are you yelling, man? I got here at the same time as Kenta's girlfriend, but no one paid attention to me..." - Ren spoke in a depressed voice, but before Shun could say anything, the young samurai continued.
"Ahh, I wonder when it will be my turn to have a beautiful girl cheering for me..." - Ren was talking to himself while looking at the sky, as if hoping God would hear his wishes.
"Never! With that face, it's more likely a girl would cheer not to see you, you should start considering plastic surgery, man..." - Shun did his best to say this with a serious face.
"Huh? You bastard! I'm gonna kill you—" - Ren lunged at his friend to get revenge, but was stopped by someone pulling his samurai topknot from behind.
"You just got here, and you're already causing trouble, Ren. Behave yourself!" - Captain Kazuki spoke sternly while holding Ren's samurai topknot.
"Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! I'm sorry, Captain, please let me go!" - Ren pleaded as he felt the pain of his hair being pulled hard.
"Hahahahahahahahaha!!" - Shun couldn't hold back and started laughing loudly while holding his belly.
