Chapter 4 - Finally Regained Consciousness
Chapter 4 - Finally Regained Consciousness
Jia Li spent the night looking after the old man. The next morning, he was moved to the only private room the local hospital had.
As of last night, the private room was still occupied, and the patient there was only discharged this morning.
Jia Li cleaned the Old man's face and hands. And when the doctor and the nurse came to check up on him, she asked...
"Doctor, why is he not awake yet?."
"He will wake up soon, give him a few hours. His vitals are ok. You look so worried about him, are you his granddaughter?." The doctor asked.
"I'm not. But I can still be referred to as his granddaughter in case you need that to fill his medical records." Jia Li replied.
"There is no need for that. If he wakes up, send someone to inform us." The doctor said before walking away with the nurse.
"Doctor, how is he?." Officer Su who was waiting outside the door asked immediately the doctor stepped out.
"His vitals are normal, but he is still unconscious. He should wake up soon." The doctor said to him.
"Okay. I will just go home to change my clothes, I will be back." Officer Su said to him.
The doctor nodded before finally walking away.
Officer Su knocked on the door to the Old Man's room before stepping in.
"Good morning, Officer Su." Jia Li greeted the officer as gave him a respectful bow.
"Good morning Miss Qin. I'm leaving for the station, I will be back shortly." Officer Su said to her.
"Safe trip!." Jia Li said to him.
After Officer Su left, Mrs. Qin appeared with two lunch boxes.
"Ah! Mum, you came at the right time, I'm so hungry." Jia Li said as she walked up to her mother.
"I just knew it!." Mrs. Qin said as she withheld the lunch boxes from her.
"You need to brush your teeth first before you eat. I also brought a change of clothes for you. Go and wash up!." Mrs. Qin said to her as she pointed the bag to her.
"Thank you, Mum!." Jia Li replied with a smile as she took the bag and walked out of the room.
Mrs. Qin set the lunch packs on the table before going to the Old Man's side to take a look at him.
As a nurse, she checked him to make sure he was okay.
Seeing that everything was fine, she relaxed.
Ten minutes later, Jia Li returned to the room. She rushed back to the room in a hurry, thinking the old man would have woken up already. But to her disappointment, he was still unconscious by the time he returned.
"Don't be disappointed, he will wake up soon. Come and eat." Mrs. Qin said as she handed the chopsticks to her
"I'm not hungry." Jia Li said with a deep frown on her face. But at the moment she rejected to eat, her stomach growled.
Her mother just stared at her wordlessly, waiting for her next action.
"I think I'm hungry." Jia Li said sheepishly.
She had wanted to eat when the Old man awakened, but it's bad that she is too hungry at the moment, because she didn't eat anything last night.
"Take this one." Mrs. Qin said as she passed one lunch box to her.
"Thank you!." Jia Li said as she took the lunch box and went to sit on the other side of the room.
As she ate her food, she asked her mother...
"Mum, you had a night shift which ended this morning, when did you return home to make food for Grandpa Fu and me?."
"I left immediately my shift ended. I cooked some food, and freshened up before coming back." Mrs. Qin replied as she sat down.
"Mum, you see where I learned the act of service from? You walked all night and returned to make food. And see where you are now, you haven't gotten any rest." Jia Li said after she swallowed the food in her mouth.
"I knew you wouldn't want to leave Mr. Fu's side, so I had to prepare the food and bring it to you. Now don't worry about me and eat your food. You are not allowed to talk while eating." Mrs. Qin said to her.
"Okay, mum!." Jia Li replied and continued with her food.
Unknown to them, Old Mr. Fu was conscious already, but still had his eyes closed. He wanted to find out where he was without anyone knowing he was awake, just in case he was in a danger zone.
Old Mr. Fu overheard the conversation between the mother and daughter and smiled to himself.
"Mum, what about the hospital bills?." Jia Li asked her mother as she suddenly remembered it.
Mrs. Qin glanced at her before sighing. "We are hoping Mr. Fu's family will come and settle the rest. I already deposited some money this morning from your father's savings, but it's still not enough."
"At least Dad has tried." Jia Li said as she rounded up with her food.
'Silly girl. That was the money Your father saved up for your college fees.' Mrs. Qin said to herself.
Slowly, Old Mr. Fu opened his eyes and coughed to get the attention of the mother and daughter.
"Grandfather, you are awake?." Jia Li asked in shock as she immediately rushed to his side when she recovered.
The plate she used in eating were dumped on the floor.
Mrs. Qin left where she was sitting and rushed to the Old man's side.
After his eyes had adjusted to the lightening in the room, Old Mr. Fu finally had a good look at the familiar face he remembered from the accident scene. The same girl that saved his life.
Not receiving a reply from him, Jia Li turned to ask her mother with a worried look on her face.
"Mum, please check on him. Is he okay?."
"I am fine." Old Mr. Fu interrupted in a hoarse voice.
Mrs. Qin immediately poured a glass of room temperature water from the bottle of flask she brought from her home.
She passed the cup to Jia Li before helping the old man up.
