Chapter 7 - You Must Think You’re The Head Of The Family
Augustus rushed over and held Skylar in his arms.
"Don't cry, Skylar, tell Daddy what happened."
"I… I was playing on the slide, but Josh cut the queue and… and pushed me down the ladder. Sob sob sob…"
Skylar cried as she wiped her tears, wrenching the hearts of those who saw.
"Who pushed you? You clearly fell down yourself but you dare to blame me! You're just a b*tch!"
Although Josh Harrington was only seven to eight years old, his words were unusually vicious just like an adult's.
Augustus was instantly enraged. "What did you say? Who taught you to say stuff like that?!"
Josh put on a righteous look and said, "It's true. My mom said that no one in your family is good. The mom is a cheap woman, so the daughter is a b*tch too! Especially you, the son-in-law who married into your wife's family. You're just a good-for-nothing that lives off a woman!"
Josh was clearly influenced a lot and said all the things that the adults usually speak at home.
Augustus clenched his fists in anger, but before he could speak, Skylar took the lead and stood up.
"Don't badmouth my mommy and daddy!"
"What did I say wrong? You little b*tch. I'll slap you to death!"
Josh raised his hand and was about to hit Skylar, but he was fortunately grabbed by Augustus.
"What are you doing? Apologize to Skylar!"
"You're just a useless man who married into your wife's family! Why should I apologize?"
"I told you to apologize!"
Augustus was stern.
Josh seemed to know that he could not win against an adult like Augustus. After freezing for two seconds, he suddenly sat on the ground and wailed.
With his cry, the adults in the inner courtyard were alarmed and came out one after another.
"My baby boy, what happened? Who bullied you?!"
A woman walked up to Josh with a gloomy face. That woman was Josh's mother, Wendy Thorne, as well as Jeanne's sister-in-law.
"Mom, he hit me!"
Josh pointed at Augustus and cried out.
Augustus was stunned. He did not expect a child to learn to frame people.
Just as he was about to explain, Wendy pointed at him and shouted, "Can't you even behave yourself as a man who married into his wife's family? You even bullied a child! How shameless are you?"
"That's right, you're just someone who married into your wife's family. You're shameless!"
Josh hid behind Wendy and pulled a face.
Augustus suppressed his anger. "Please show some respect. You haven't even asked what really happened. Why do you think it's my fault?"
"Daddy didn't hit Josh at all! It was Josh who pushed me down the slide…"
"Shut your mouth! The adults are talking. Kids should stay out of it!"
Wendy roared at Skylar in anger. Her expression was ferocious as if she wanted to eat someone up, and Skylar was so scared that she was shaking.
Wendy's loud voice drew out the rest of the people in the inner courtyard, and even Old Madam Harrington was shocked.
"What's all the ruckus about?!"
Wendy quickly said, "Grandma, it's your useless granddaughter's husband. A grown man like him was bullying our Josh. What a shameless man!"
"Very good, Augustus Cross. You must think you're tough now! How dare you bully a child from my family?"
It was clear that in Old Madam Harrington's eyes, she never regarded Augustus as part of the Harrington family.
"Augustus, what are you doing? Hurry up and apologize to Wendy!"
Jeanne had just gotten a scolding due to yesterday's incident. She did not expect Augustus to make a blunder again.
"I'm not in the wrong! Why should I apologize?"
If it only involved himself, then Augustus might have conceded, but his daughter was involved too.
If the person who was not in the wrong had to apologize, how would he teach his daughter?
However, Augustus had just finished speaking when Liane raised her hand to slap him across the face.
"You dare to disobey Jeanne? You better cut the crap and apologize this instant!"
For six years, Liane had long been accustomed to treating Augustus with this attitude.
The crowd snickered. This was not the first time they saw such a scene. Augustus's identity as a cowardly man who married into his wife's family had been deeply rooted in the hearts of those people.
Augustus stared at Liane with his red face. Putting aside how other people treated him, even his mother-in-law stood by others indiscriminately. This deeply disappointed Augustus.
"I'm not wrong, so I won't apologize! Also, you're Jeanne's mother, so I respect you, but it doesn't mean that I'll let you hit and scold me. I hope that this is the last time you hit me!"
Augustus's words were neither servile nor overbearing, but Liane was subdued.
Just then, a voice spoke.
"Wow, even your wife and your mother-in-law can't keep you in check anymore. Augustus Cross, you must really think that you're the head of the family!"
The one who spoke was Jeanne's eldest brother, Carter Harrington!
Harrington Corporation was a family business, and Jeanne was only the head of the sales department. Carter was in charge of the marketing department and was also Old Madam Harrington's favorite grandson!
Carter had always regarded Jeanne as a rival for the successor of Harrington Corp, so he squeezed Augustus at every chance he got.
Carter looked at Jeanne and said with a teasing smile, "Jeanne, it seems your methods aren't working. If you can't even discipline your husband, how can you manage Harrington Corp in the future?"
Augustus frowned. "Shut your mouth, Carter. Don't try to use this issue to further your agenda!"
"It's you who should shut your mouth!" Old Madam Harrington flew into a rage and slammed her cane on the ground heavily.. "Carter is a child of the Harrington family. A man like you isn't qualified to talk back!"
