Chapter 186: What the...
Chapter - 186
"Are you here yet?" Wearing a black tuxedo, a bow tie, and with his chair nicely gelled and combed hair, Alex stood in a corner talking on the phone with someone.
He was in a large, brightly lit room designed like the twentieth-century European architecture. And to make it even more magnificent, majestic chandeliers hung from the tall ceilings.
But even the hall paled in comparison to the people. While he stood in the corner, there were tons of people walking around him. And every one of them looked rich, very rich. Actually, it was the pre-release event for their new project. But more than anything, it was a party for the rich to take a break, gather together and boast.
Well, it could also be an opportunity for some to make a few connections.
Everyone had a smile on their face as they greeted each other. If one were to just look at the appearance, the party was nothing but an amicable gathering of the rich. But that was only on the surface. Not everyone was as jolly as it seemed. Everyone only cared about those they found of use. For example, while Alex stood alone, no one cared about him.
Not a single person even greeted him.
Why?
Because he was a nobody. So, unless somebody like him was clinging to a thick thigh, no one was going to approach them. They have to make efforts to introduce themselves, hoping to build connections and get some chunk of meat thrown their way.
Luckily, Alex was not here to get anyone's share of the pie. He was only concerned about not being part of any unnecessary trouble. He had already done his part for the last three months. Now, it was all up to Jessica, and from what Alex knew about her, Jessica would do a good job. So right now, he had his attention somewhere else.
"No need to hurry. Just give me a call when you are here, and I will meet you at the entrance," Alex was all smiles when he ended the call. But as soon as he turned to look at the gathering, he sighed. Being the granddaughter of the richest man in the city certainly had its perks. Just a small affair, and every other wealthy and influential person in the city was under one roof. It was remarkable.
But despite the dazzle, Alex felt out of place. This was clearly not his sort of thing. But compared to him, his parents and his brother were totally different. Not only did they assimilate into the crowd, Alex felt they were one of the focal points of this gathering.
Everyone was going out of their way to greet George and Martha. Though it was a bit more than necessary, Alex could understand the thought behind the gesture. Despite his father's careless attitude, the company has been in the market for so many years without shutting down. Being such a small company, it was a remarkable feat. But now, suddenly, George found a bigger tree to cling to.
And it was not Jessica, but her grandfather, Frank. Though it was indirect, being close to Jessica will surely help George in business. So everyone wanted to have a good word with George. Who knows, he might come in handy someday.
On the other hand, the one making the most out of the party was Damien. Much to the dismay of other guys at the party, the guy found himself flocked with beauties giggling over his silly talk. Being a smooth tongue with a handsome face really helped Damien's case. Most likely, he wasn't going home tonight. But Damien was a great brother indeed.
When he saw Alex all alone, he even let go of the temptation of the fairies around him.
"Look at you standing all alone, lost in your own world," while Alex looked lost, Damien excused himself and made his way towards Alex, "What's with you and your daydreaming?"
"Finally willing to step down from your paradise?" Alex ignored Damien's question and asked with sarcasm.
"What can I do?" Damien helplessly shrugged at his brother and smiled, "After all, I am the good brother who would leave behind his heaven to accompany his celibate brother."
"Celibate your ass," Alex was quick to rebuke, "Why is there only poop every time you speak?"
"You are the only one calling it to poop," Damien still played cool, "Look at them," Damien gestured with his eyes to all the girls looking their way and waved back to their delight.
"... What do you think got them this excited?" Damien asked as he flickered his tongue in front of Alex.
"Fuck off..." Alex pushed Damien's face away from him in disgust. And luckily, his phone saved him at this very moment.
"Hello!" Alex turned away from Damien and answered, "Wait for me there. I will be there in a minute," Alex replied and hung up.
"Who is it?" Walking in front of Alex, Damien asked curiously.
"A friend, "And saying so, Alex walked away.
"Wonder who got him this excited," Damien looked confused as he watched Alex leave.
"Who is excited," While Damien looked in Alex's direction, someone asked. It was Martha. She got tired of the constant stream of people coming up to her for greetings. She thought maybe her two sons would help ward off some for her.
"... Where is your brother going?" Martha asked as she saw Alex walk away.
"Don't know." Damien shook his head, "He got a call from some friend of his and just ran out to get them," Damien told Martha.
"Friend? He invited his friend to the party?" Martha looked surprised. She didn't even know if Alex had a friend.
"Is it a boy," Martha looked curiously at Damien, "Or perhaps a girl?"
"Only god knows what he does," Damien shook his head, "I am telling you, it wouldn't be surprising if one day he just walked in with a kid in his arms and introduced his wife... aaa... aaa... What the fuck!" Damien suddenly looked horrified.
"Watch your tongue. We are not at home anymore," Martha hurriedly tried to shush Damien.
But instead of replying to Martha, Damien grabbed her shoulder and turned her to look in the opposite direction.
"Eeehh... What are you..." Martha was perplexed by Damien's sudden behaviour. But when she saw the scene in front of her, even her eyes grew wide in shock.
"What the fuck!" Martha also cursed. And now both mother and son looked in front of them, horrified.
