Chapter 21 - THEY ARE BACK
"Is this report true?" Kevin asked after he finished reading the digital letter given by Andre. The digital letter looked like a tablet PC. It was larger than a cell phone, thin, and transparent.
After Kevin finished reading the letter, the sophisticated thing automatically turned off and locked again. Only certain people could unlock the letter, including Kevin and Andre.
Andre nodded firmly in response to his colleague's question. "This report has not been published because they don't want to make the public panicked, but the police guarantee that this report is true," he answered.
Kevin's eyes, framed by his reading glasses, returned to the letter that automatically unlocked after the scientist's iris was successfully recognized by its security system.
The letter was a report about the discovery of a corpse whose body parts were no longer intact. The report stated that the body was found early this morning, and based on the autopsy results, it was likely that the victim died around midnight.
Based on the scars obtained, the police concluded that the corpse, which was still being identified, was preyed on by wild animals. There were not many body parts left, mostly in the form of bones and the skull, as well as hair that was also still attached to the skull.
The skull was still there, but the brain was gone. Organs such as the eyes, tongue, heart, liver, lungs, and others also disappeared without a trace. The police only concluded that it was the act of a wild beast, but it seemed that the case was not that simple.
"After all this time, case like this finally reappear, and it seems they are getting crueler and crueler. Based on the old documents, they only eat human flesh without touching their internal organs in the past, but now they are getting worse by only leaving the bones. This is terrible," Kevin said in a weak tone. His hand still holding the digital letter trembling slightly.
Although he did not mention it aloud, it was clear that the "they" he meant were werewolves. Yes, Kevin believed that this case had something to do with werewolves.
"Andre, send a letter to the police station to ask for permission to research the corpse. I want to analyze the DNA that was left on the corpse. Research on the DNA will be very important to see the extent of werewolves' evolution over the last seventeen years."
Andre nodded, but his expression looked a little doubtful. He awkwardly rubbed the nape of his neck and said, "I'll take care of it, but can I do it tomorrow? It's 10 PM already, and I don't want to be home later than this. The current situation is very scary."
Kevin looked up at Andre and considered his colleague's suggestion. It was true that now the situation was no longer conducive. Even though there was no mass panic because this news had not been released to the public yet, but he could feel the tense situation.
This was the first case since seventeen years ago, and it was possible that there would be a second, third, and so on. There was nothing wrong with taking preventive action.
"I understand," Kevin finally replied. "You can take care of the papers tomorrow, and now you can go home. Your wife must have been waiting," he added in the end.
Andre finally smiled widely. "Okay, I'll head home after this. You should go straight home too, Kev. Even though you don't have a wife and maybe no one will cry for you if you die, but you still have to survive for my sake," said the man in a dramatic tone.
At first, Kevin was a bit touched by Andre's caring words, but now he was disgusted and wanted to vomit after hearing his colleague's complete sentence.
He wanted to reward Andre with a hit or two, but the rascal had run toward the exit while laughing loudly like a madman. Kevin just shook his head at the strange behavior of his colleague.
The handsome scientist then continued reading the report about the mysterious case that happened last night, and his mind wandered. He had to quickly find a solution to all of this. If not, there would be more victims in the future.
He actually wanted to try to open up his mother's cloud storage, but he still didn't have the courage to try out the passwords. He was afraid that the account would end up being blocked.
After taking another deep breath, Kevin finally got up from his chair. The tall young man took off his reading glasses and his laboratory coat, then tidied up his belongings. He then grabbed his car keys, then walked over to turn off the lights.
After all the things were sorted out, he came out of the laboratory, not forgetting to lock the door as usual. He decided to do what Andre said and would go straight home.
His long footsteps brought the scientist to the car park, and he immediately entered the black sedan. After fastening his seatbelt, he started the engine and drove his car on the cold asphalt.
The distance from work to home was not too far. It usually took him about 25 minutes to get to his house in the morning or afternoon, but it may only take him 18-20 minutes when the night already this late. Quite a lot of time had been cut because the streets were deserted at this time.
The deserted street was usually an advantage for Kevin to cut times, but tonight was unusual. Tonight was different because his car engine suddenly died on a deserted road.
The scientist hit the steering wheel angrily. "Damn it, you old car! I just brought you to the repair shop two months ago for service, but now you're acting again!" He cursed his bad luck by scolding his car.
The fair-skinned young man got out of his car, then walked towards the front of the car and opened the hood of the black sedan. Thick smoke immediately rose at once, causing him to wave his hand and cough for a few moments.
The sight made him feel déjà vu. He suddenly remembered his first meeting with Kris a few months ago.
"Why I even remember that annoying man at a time like this?" He asked disgustingly.
Kevin didn't lie when he said that he was not familiar with car engines. Whenever his car had a problem, he would immediately bring the vehicle to the repair shop without the hassle of fixing it himself. He was not a mechanic, so why should he bother?
But, he had no other choice now. It was late at night, and he didn't know whom to ask for help. Calling the repair shop would be futile because there was no 24-hour repair shop in the area.
And, when his mind was still clouded, he suddenly felt goosebumps. Was this place haunted? Kevin swallowed hard. He had never seen a ghost before, but it didn't mean he wasn't afraid of ghosts.
He felt someone was watching him from behind. He actually didn't want to turn around. He didn't dare to look at the scary figure who might be looking at him from behind now. Somehow, his body refused to hear what's on his mind and stiffly turned around. His eyes slowly catching what kind of creature was staring at him eerily.
And, once his body had turned perfectly round, he was finally able to breathe out a sigh of relief. 'Oh, it's just a big wolf with red eyes and black fur,' he thought.
His heart had just started beating normally again when he realized that something was not right.
Wait, a big wolf with red eyes and black fur?!
The fear that was previously caused by mystical things now turned into fear that he could be a dinner menu tonight. He was so sure that the creature in front of him was not an ordinary wolf. It was a werewolf!
His assumption was proven right when the mysterious creature slowly changed form. The creature transformed into a male figure that looked like a human with a tall and muscular body, and his right arm was covered with tattoos of various kinds.
Unconsciously, Kevin took a step back when he realized that the figure in front of him started walking toward him. He continued to walk backward, but his movement halted when his leg hit the front of his broken car. Shit, he was stuck!
The mysterious figure in front of him grinned sinisterly, showing off his sharp and long fangs. Then, with the speed of light, the figure moved closer and closer to Kevin, and he choked Kevin with his right hand which was decorated with long sharp fingernails.
"You look delicious," the creature whispered right in front of Kevin's face. The grip on his neck tightened, those long and sharp fingernails pricked the human's neck.
Kevin's fears increased many-fold when the scary creature started to bring its face close to the young scientist's neck with an open mouth, ready to devour his long neck.
Would he die tonight and no one would cry for him just like what Andre said?
