Chapter 154: Treasure Temples, Good Rewards
After Lex died, Rin grabbed his Hunter Card and returned to the treasure temple.
They were already behind since they hadn't entered a treasure temple yet, so putting away the Hunter card, Rin entered the treasure temple.
The Challenge she got was to pursue ten flying monsters and kill them within a certain time limit. The faster she finished the Challenge, the better the rewards.
Meanwhile, Erix teleported away to another treasure temple he had located.
After entering, he touched the golden goat's head, which had a magic circle on it; Erix saw the information.
[Treasure Temple: Endurance Devil ]
-Survive in a desolate land that oozes out demonic monsters from the ground.
_Milestones:
—> Survive for 1 minute — Low-grade Elemental Fruit box, 50 points.
—> Survive for 3 minutes — Medium-grade Elemental Fruit box, 100 points.
—> Survive for 5 minutes — High-grade Elemental Fruit box, 200 points.
Without hesitation, Erix accepted the Challenge and disappeared.
After arriving in a hellish, barren landscape, Erix immediately encountered five demonic humanoid monsters with goat horns and hammer hands before them.
They rushed towards him, eyes red and mouth opened while roaring.
*Smack* x 5
Their stats were 500 in all, so Erix one-shotted them with a minor Sling Shot punch each in quick succession before they could get close to him.
The next wave of monsters arrived, slightly stronger, but not much.
…
After five minutes, Erix came out and saw Rin sitting at his temple's stairs.
Upon sensing Erix, Rin turned around with a grin while eating a dark blue fruit with lightning patterns.
"You're out? Haha, this treasure temple's reward is actually awesome," Rin said as she quickly finished the fruit. "Open your fruit box and get yours."
Erix was surprised and eagerly opened the box as he shone and presented him with options.
[ Only one level 2 affinity detected. You have gained one Metal-elemental fruit. ]
Erix looked at the gray fruit with a metallic ore structure on his fruit in surprise.
'Inspect.'
[ Metal-Elemental Fruit ]
_Grade: High.
_Effect: Upon eating the fruit, it will refine 10% of your body with Metal Elemental power.
'This is great!' Erix's eyes shone, and he quickly munched on the fruit, finishing it in a couple of seconds as it melted into his mouth after each bite.
Inside his Origin Region, below his Metal Affinity, a humanoid physique resembling his figure manifested in a model-like structure. It showed that the surface of his body was refined by Metal elements, which equaled roughly 10% of his entire body.
Once Rin and Erix finished 100% of their body's refinement, they would have a profound boost in power since they would acquire their respective elemental physique.
"Let's not waste more time and quickly challenge other temples," Erix said with a glint in his eyes. "We have to find temples that are being challenged by other participants and win against them. That's the only surefire way for us to reach 1000 points before others."
After all, the Challenge would reset if someone interfered in the Challenge and made it into a competition between the two.
"Alright, let's finish this," Rin said with a somber expression. "This checkpoint race gives a disadvantage to groups as we'll have to hunt others and rob their chances."
As such, Rin and Erix quickly flew through the forest while keeping their Spirit Sense spread.
Erix could readily discover treasure temples with his Space Mapping.
They only needed to win four more temple challenges with the highest grade, as they did in the first Challenge.
They also passed the second Challenge with the highest grade, making their body refining progress reach 20%.
Afterward, they encountered a couple of individuals, but none of them paid attention to the others as everyone just wanted to challenge Treasure Temples and get 1000 points as soon as possible.
Soon, the duo arrived at a mountain base where Erix had discovered two treasure temples, one at the mountain's base and another at its peak, which was roughly two kilometers in height.
Both of them were challenged by very familiar people. A man and a woman, both of whom were in Lex's gang and their pursuers in the previous race.
"This temple is about surviving. Erix, you go for it. I'll go at the top one."
"Alright."
The duo had a plan on what to do after their Challenge was over and their enemies attacked them, so they were not worried. They realized that there wasn't much gap in strength between them and others because the main factor that determined one's combat power was their stats, Affinity realm, and skills.
Rin and Erix had powerful self-created skills that utilized their full potential, so they had the upper hand against most in this.
The chaos gadget helped them hugely since it restricted the arbiter's use of skills on other participants. After all, if Lex could use his skills unbridled, they would have slightly lower chances of succeeding in killing him as his attacks would be more lethal on them while theirs would be less on him.
The stats difference could be huge, but it wasn't hopeless enough to make their attacks and defense ineffective for a few reasons that depended on individuals.
Naturally, the above gap was only possible to truly close because both Rin and Erix had 2nd realm affinities and 1st realm concepts, which hugely increased one's power as long as they were utilized properly through skills.
Those who had level 1 affinity were weeded out quickly. There were even some above level 150, but they didn't reach a second realm in their affinity.
The true obstacles in Rin's and Erix's path only remained those peak Noble-order powerhouses who had completely refined their body with their level 2 affinities and had more variety of skills along with peak physical and magical parameters.
A noble order powerhouse could have a maximum of 1000 fundamental points in all stats, but that was not the limit.
The armor sets increased their defense, and weapons increased their attacks, while if someone had a Bloodline, their stats would further increase.
But a strong Bloodline like what Rin had was rare, though Rin was only level 1 in her Bloodline progression, so she hadn't unlocked its full power.
In short, the chances of either Rin and Erix getting first place wholly depended on the nature of the next two Chaos Races if they passed this one.
…
Erix entered a survival challenge, but the moment he entered, the nature of the Challenge slightly changed.
Arriving amidst a huge underground hall, Erix saw the woman while the monsters around her that she was killing suddenly disappeared.
[Challenge has been reset. Survive for five minutes while killing monsters. Killing monsters will count into killing points, and If any of you are damaged by other monsters, the killing points will reduce.]
[The one to have higher killing points after surviving for five minutes will be the winner.]
[ The challenge competition will start in ten seconds. ]
"You…." The woman with a red noble frock and black eyes narrowed her eyes. Initially, she was about to curse him, but then a smile of ridicule formed on her face.
"You think you can win against me in this competition?"
Erix smiled and waved his hand, conjuring a spinning metal that he shot toward the woman.
"What are you doing?" the woman snorted. "We can't hurt each other here, even with Chaos Gadgets."
"Yeah, I was just checking, but thanks for the information."
'Even if we can't hurt each other, we might be able to interfere with each other…' Erix wondered. 'I'll have to check.'
The countdown hit zero, and both of them heard shrill cries as they looked at the ceiling of this huge underground area a hundred meters above them.
Ten grotesque birds of two-meter size, with colorful wings and fur, swooped towards them with glowings and wings and talons.
The woman quickly flew up while conjuring five earth crystals around that shot earth shards toward the birds.
However, Erix simply teleported before her while executing a whirlwind Punch and killed three birds in the range of the punch, shredding them into pieces as they vanished.
Right after that, he swiftly punched in the air as it entered into a wormhole and smacked a bird that was going to get hit by the woman's attacks!
The woman's eyes turned bloodshot with indigestion. 'Why does he have space affinity?!'
Despite trying her best, Erix killed seven birds while she killed only three.
But when the next wave of twenty monsters appeared, ten flying and ten ground, Erix tried something, and it worked, which caused him to roar out in laughter.
"STOP!!" The woman screamed as she released a barrage of glowing dark brown crystal shards. She had a level 2 Earth affinity, so she also had a variety of Earth crystal powers.
However, Erix sneered and created a huge wormhole before the attacks, causing them to vanish into the wormhole with no exit as it blasted there and then before her dark brown crystal shards could hurt the monsters!
Their powers couldn't hurt each other, but their powers could influence each other's powers!
Erix figured there had to be some hidden rule like usual since it was a competition and not a normal one at that.
This challenge competition with this woman became too easy for him as he was sure to win with the lead of killing points he had.
Meanwhile, Rin was against a man who had a level 2 flame affinity and a level 1 lightning affinity.
The Challenge was about killing 500 monsters spread through the dark land, and the one to kill more at the end would win.
The difference between their points wasn't much, but Rin still had the lead since she was quicker and had a variety of martial weapon moves and skills from her vast experience of learning martial arts since she was young, which she had evolved and incorporated into her fighting style with magic.
Both of them were not letting their opponents get the better of them!
