Chapter 99: 99: Made a Fortune
Chapter 99: Made a Fortune
Zheng Guyuan had only been clinging to his last breath, intending to take Zheng Yan to safety.
Now that Zheng Yan had been killed before his eyes, a wave of desolation surged in Zheng Guyuan’s heart. He could no longer hold on, his Base Mutation carapace receded, blood fell from his body like raindrops, and he vomited a large mouthful of blood, embracing Zheng Yan’s corpse as they both fell into the forest below.
In his lifetime, he had killed countless enemies and waged wars on alien worlds, but he would never have imagined that today he would be brought to such a state by two Mutators and a swarm of Base Variant Creatures.
Amidst his unwillingness and regret, his body, along with Zheng Yan’s corpse, was engulfed by the Mushroom Beast horde.
Lin Shen raised his Angel Revolver, and the launched Black Armored Centipedes flew back, landing beside him.
Lin Shen and Wei Wufu looked around at the Mushroom Beasts flooding in like tidewater and inwardly cursed their luck; they had barely dealt with an Ascender, only to be trapped amidst a creature swarm. Today was truly cursed.
Luckily, they had obtained five Mutated Crystal Base pets. With a desperate effort, perhaps there was a sliver of a chance of survival.
The two men stood back to back, preparing to fight for their lives, when they heard a strange scream. All the Mushroom Beasts halted and didn’t charge at them anymore.
Under their puzzled gaze, the creature swarm turned around and gradually retreated into the depths of the forest, leaving not a trace behind in a short time.
It was then that Lin Shen and Wei Wufu saw the Black-Capped Mushroom Beast standing in the forest afar, with Zheng Guyuan’s red Jade Sword stuck into the ground before it.
Its gaze fixed on Lin Shen, and although still icy, it seemed to carry a bit less malice.
After locking eyes with Lin Shen for a moment, the Black-Capped Mushroom Beast slowly retreated behind the trees and gradually disappeared from view.
“Is it letting us off the hook?” Lin Shen said with a wry smile.
“Yes,” replied Wei Wufu, pointing at the Blade of the Heart still stuck in the ground. “Not taken away. For us?”
“Seems like it,” Lin Shen said, not entirely sure.
Wei Wufu walked over and pulled out the Blade of the Heart. With his strength, he found it surprisingly heavy, unable to lift it with both hands, dragging it across the ground instead.
Lin Shen actually wanted to search for Zheng Yan’s body, where an Ascension Level Pet Launcher and three Ascension Pet Capsules remained.
Unfortunately, glancing at where Zheng Guyuan and Zheng Yan had fallen, he saw nothing but bloodstains; the Mushroom Beasts likely took everything.
His gaze shifted, Lin Shen noticed a backpack that Zheng Guyuan had dropped on the ground, ran over, and rifled through it, finding only a Pet Egg and some worthless trinkets inside.
“This is…” Lin Shen and Wei Wufu exclaimed in shock, their reasons for surprise different.
Lin Shen’s shock was due to the mosaic on the Pet Egg, while Wei Wufu’s shock was because it was an Ascension Egg.
Lin Shen packed away both the backpack and the Ascension Egg; this really was a huge win.
Wei Wufu, clutching the red Jade Sword, pondered why the Black-Capped Mushroom Beast didn’t take the red Jade Sword but took Zheng Guyuan’s Pet Launcher and three Ascension Pet Capsules.
“Can a Base Variant Creature even use a Pet Launcher and Pet Capsules?” Lin Shen wondered to himself.
Had it been any other Base Variant Creature, Lin Shen would be certain they couldn’t use a Pet Launcher and Pet Capsules, but that particular Black-Capped Mushroom Beast was another story.
After discussing with Wei Wufu, the two decided to first return to Dark Bird Base.
Without the Black-Capped Mushroom Beast blocking their way, their return to Dark Bird Base was straightforward. However, the issue with the Zheng Family wasn’t so easily resolved.
Zheng Yan’s death might be tolerated by the Zheng Family, but the death of an Ascender outside was something the Zheng Family might not let go of easily.
Even if Zheng Guyuan wasn’t killed by Lin Shen and his companions, everyone at Yashen Base knew that Zheng Guyuan had come after Lin Shen. In the end, the Zheng Family would still find them accountable.
“Let’s hope the Zheng Family doesn’t find out so quickly that Zheng Guyuan and Zheng Yan are dead,” Lin Shen had no other solution for now, only to return to Dark Bird Base to consult with his eldest sister and see if there was a way to resolve this.
“Old Wei, do you think that Black-Capped Mushroom Beast left us Zheng Guyuan’s Blade of the Heart because it was also afraid of Zheng Guyuan’s companions causing it trouble? By leaving the Blade of the Heart with us, it is as if it has passed the trouble onto us?” Lin Shen suddenly thought of this problem.
“It’s very clever,” Wei Wufu said after a long reflection.
“Let’s stash the item for now,” Lin Shen found himself without options, and even if it was as he suspected, there was no reason not to take it.
Wei Wufu didn’t speak, and no one knew what he was thinking.
“Wei, give it to me straight, are you really from Tiancheng’s Wei Family?” Lin Shen couldn’t help but ask.
Before deciding to keep Wei Wufu by his side, Lin Shen had spoken to him once.
At that time, Wei Wufu said it was his elder brother who asked him to look after Lin Shen, but Lin Shen had been somewhat skeptical then.
After spending such a long time together, Lin Shen had come to truly believe him because, from what he had come to know about Wei Wufu over these past few days, Wei Wufu simply wasn’t capable of lying.
However, Lin Shen knew nothing about Wei Wufu’s background or origins.
“Yes,” Wei Wufu acknowledged readily.
“That makes things easier. If all else fails, how about our Lin Family moves to Tiancheng and follows your lead?” Lin Shen naturally didn’t wish to rely on others if there was another way.
But in a situation with no alternatives, relying on others was certainly better than death.
Besides, with Wei Wufu, a member of the Wei Family caring for them, they probably wouldn’t fare too poorly in Tiancheng.
“Tiancheng, dangerous, very harsh,” Wei Wufu said.
“How harsh can it be?” Lin Shen asked curiously.
If even Wei Wufu, with his personality, said it was very harsh, it must be truly severe!
“The Wei Family still has thirteen people left.” This was the most complete and fluent sentence that Wei Wufu had ever spoken since Lin Shen had known him.
This statement silenced Lin Shen. Over two hundred years ago, the Wei Family had more than a thousand members, and now, there were only thirteen left.
The dangers of Tiancheng were evident; even the Wei Family, respected and feared by everyone in Tiancheng, didn’t seem to be faring well, as their numbers dwindled.
After returning to Dark Bird Base, everyone treated them with great enthusiasm.
The people of Dark Bird Base were aware of the reputations of War God Wei and the playboy. Now, the whole Dark Bird Base was abuzz with talk that soon, Dark Bird Base might unify under the three families.
Lin Shen had killed the Mutant Sea Demon God General with a single shot, and to the people of Dark Bird Base, this made him appear to be the mightiest person in the world. The Qi and Wang families combined weren’t match for several shots from Lin Shen.
When he returned to the Lin Family compound, Lin Miao, who had received the news ahead of time, didn’t come out to meet him.
The moment Lin Shen walked into the living room, he saw Lin Miao standing solemnly in front of their parents’ memorial tablets, holding a bamboo stick in her hand.
“Kneel down.” The first words Lin Miao spoke upon seeing Lin Shen made him kneel.
Lin Shen knelt with a thud. To him, Lin Miao wasn’t just a sister; she was more like a mother to him.
“Big sis, what are you doing?” Lin Shen dared not stand up and could only speak in a coquettish tone while kneeling, his eyes gazing pitifully at Lin Miao.
Given how dearly Lin Miao doted on him, she was likely to feel sorry for him and help him up any second now.
Unfortunately, this time Lin Shen miscalculated; Lin Miao still had a cold expression as she said, “What was the promise we four siblings made in front of our parents’ memorial tablets? Have you already forgotten it all?”
“I haven’t forgotten,” Lin Shen quickly replied earnestly.
“Haven’t forgotten? If you haven’t forgotten, then why did you go on such a dangerous adventure? What would we do if something happened to you?” Lin Miao scolded angrily, “Haven’t we already agreed? I, your big sister, along with your third and fourth brothers will handle things outside. You only need to protect your little life, stay alive, marry quickly, have children, and continue the Lin Family’s lineage. Do those promises still count?”
“Of course they count,” Lin Shen quickly responded with a smile meant to appease her.
“If they count, then hurry up and marry and have children. Don’t go on any more adventures,” Lin Miao’s tone softened substantially.
“Sis, I’ve been trying hard to marry and have children, okay? You know my situation. With the whole Lu Qing issue, it’s tough finding someone to marry. I want to, but no one’s willing,” Lin Shen said with a look of aggrieved innocence.
“That’s not a problem. I’ve already found someone suitable for you. When you meet her, make sure you talk things through well, and let’s settle it all this month. We’ll aim to welcome a chubby little baby next year,” Lin Miao said with a smile, helping Lin Shen to his feet.
