Sovereign of the Firmaments

Chapter 49 - Ambush Gone Wrong

'Looks like today is my lucky day.'

The assassin was excited when he saw two more targets on his hit list appear.

What's more, they were coming towards him and as long as they continued to move towards him, they would see him. So, without wasting any time, he followed his usual technique.

The thing is, the current terrain was not a good place for him to assassinate because other than slight ups and downs, there were rarely any obstacles to hide.

'Once I kill these two targets, my promotion to the gold rank is confirmed.'

While lying on the ground, he was thinking about his promotion because until now, he had killed eight targets and with the two he was going to kill, it would be ten which was the required number he had to kill to get a promotion to the gold rank.

In the assassin guild, other than the strength of the assassin, there was another classification depending on the number of missions or kills they completed.

They were Bronze, Silver, Gold, Dark Gold, Purple and Diamond.

Currently, the assassin lying on the ground had just begun taking his missions and the guild leader, Ghost snake had promised the 10 young assassins that as long as he kills 10 targets from the list, they would directly skip promoted from Bronze to Gold by skipping a Silver rank.

So, all the young assassins were motivated for this mission.

'I will be becoming a gold-ranked assassin in my first mission itself.'

Whenever he had that thought in his mind, his motivation to kill the two targets increased.

As for the two targets that were walking towards the assassin, they were none other than Lucas and Luna.

'We already walked for an hour but there is nothing and we didn't even find a single participant. I wonder how big this dungeon is.'

Lucas muttered to himself as he walked forward and from time to time he would check on the little snake which was still sleeping without showing any signs of waking up.

Behind him, Luna was silently walking without talking about anything as though she was thinking about something.

It was like that for an hour or so.

"So, what happened to your father?"

Finally, Lucas asked about Luna's father because he had to collect as much information as possible regarding his future ally.

"Huh?"

Hearing Lucas' question, Luna came out of her thoughts and replied, "My father was poisoned with fire poison from a rank 5 or higher spirit beast."

"Rank 5 spirit beast's poison?"

Lucas raised his brows because rank 5 spirit beast is equivalent to Higher Knight or Higher Mage.

Currently, the strongest person in the Silverstone was a tier 1 Higher knight and it was the guild leader of Adventurer's guild.

'Looks like someone went to a lot of trouble to get the poison.'

Lucas silently thought to himself and kept note of it in his mind.

"The true perpetrator was never found; however, I am…."

'Shoo'

Just as Lucas continued to say something, Lucas signalled her to keep quiet because he saw four bodies lying on the ground and pointed his finger into the distance.

'From their clothes, two are from weapons pavilion, and the other two are from alchemy guild and assassin guild respectively.'

Following Lucas' finger, Luna squinted her eyes as she silently replied to Lucas; however, what she didn't understand was why Lucas asked her to be silent.

'Keep an eye on the surroundings and check for the places where someone could hide.'

Lucas didn't bother to explain to her; instead, he whispered back to her.

'Huh?'

Even though Luna didn't understand why Lucas was asking her to do that, she nodded her head and checked the surroundings.

'There are a few boulders from the corpses; still, they were very far. So, it's not an ambush.'

It took a few moments for Luna to understand Lucas's thoughts as she replied while Lucas was squinting at the bodies lying on the ground in the distance.

'O fire elements in nature….'

As soon as he heard Luna's words, he started chanting a 'Fireball' spell which made Luna surprised; however, she thought Lucas was correct earlier by asking her to check the surroundings and she decided to believe Lucas.

'Fireball'

He walked a little closer to the bodies before summoning the fireball and releasing it at the lying bodies.

'What is taking them so long?'

Currently, the assassin waiting for his targets frowned as they were taking longer than he imagined; however, he was still waiting in patience with his eyes closed.

From the time Lucas saw the corpses to now, the corpse of the alchemy guild's member was already swallowed by the dungeon leaving three bodies behind.

Moreover, all three bodies were close to one another.

'Boom'

The fireball landed on the three bodies blasting two bodies in two directions and as for the body in the middle, it was turned into pieces.

'Ding,

The host killed a high-level assassin servant. Gained one sovereign point.

'Ding,

Bullseye. 10 units of experience gained.

Fireball, level 1 (11/100 experience).

'He is just an amateur.'

Lucas was not surprised in the least as he scoffed at the body that burned to ashes.

As a deadly assassin in his past life, how could Lucas not know that it was an ambush?

'But I got the best experience. Is it because of the fireball spell? However, I should get fewer experience points since it is the weakest spell I have currently.'

Lucas was pleasantly surprised by the experience points.

'Is it because of killing a living being? I just have to use other spells on the living targets to find out.'

After thinking for a moment, Lucas came to that conclusion; however, he was not sure about it yet.

Despite the 'Fireball' spell being his weakest spell, Lucas only used it because assassins have the weakest defence that even basic spells could kill them.

"You are being paranoid."

Luna shook her head and walked some distance away before sitting on the ground because, in her view, all the bodies lying on the ground are corpses.

'If it helps to stay alive, then be paranoid.'

This was another thing he learned in his past life which was very hard to forget as it saved his life many times.

Soon, Lucas started collecting the loot on the ground.

Even though the dungeon eats the bodies, it leaves behind the items. So, Lucas took his own time in collecting the items.

<So far, 100 participants have died. The entrance to the Infernal castle is opened>

Just as he was collecting the loot, the familiar voice of the dungeon spirit resounded in the entire dungeon.
