Chapter 22 - Diabolical Monkey Part 1
Lilith's POV
I was lying on Sakamaki's bed as usual. I always sleep in his bed whenever he is not home. It's weird that in the human realm, I'm getting tired more often. It's because this realm doesn't have adequate mana in their surroundings.
Sitting up straight, I stretched my arms and legs. I ran my hand through my long white hair. A month has passed since I appeared here. I slid to the edge of the bed and got off.
He was again late today. The last time he was late, it didn't turn out well for him. I hope he is fine.
I don't care about his existence in the slightest to be honest, all I care about is keeping the monkey alive so that he can complete the contract.
Keeping my monkey alive.
Looking at the clock, as time was ticking by and I was getting impatient. I remembered something from my past, which made my blood boil.
I could still remember that day freshly in my memory. And why wouldn't I? It was the day my life turned upside down. Everything was taken away from me.
But something was also given to me which I didn't like much. It was more of a curse than a boon.
And a certain man was responsible for this. I'll never forget the look in his eye and smile he gave me. He dared look down on me. If my circumstances did not tie me back then, I would have finished him right there.
I will get back to him. I will make him regret trying to sabotage me. I'm the great Lilith, the fourth upper devil. I'll take my title back. I found my fist clenched and calmed down a little.
I think Sakamaki was the right person for this contract. He did well because this was his first target. I looked at my arms and a smile formed on my face. The lives of so many people who couldn't become the monkey for this contract stain these hands.
Though it's not over that day, I'm pretty sure he did it today. I can't sense negative energy from the vessel anymore. I'm impressed that he lived up to his word. Most people in this situation would just bluff to make themselves feel better.
His first contract was successful. I have good news for him and also for me. Just a couple of more and it will be alright for me. The thought gave me a kind of feeling in my stomach. I guess in the human realm; they call it getting butterflies in the stomach.
The doorbell rang, and it startled me. I walked up to the door and it was Sakamaki. I opened the door, and he entered. His face showed little emotion whenever he was talking to me, so I decided to give him the good news that I had for him.
"I have good news for you."
"Regarding the contract?" He said as walked towards his room. I like how he tries to be so calm around me.
He was indeed a person with great perception. But I never really got to know him. He doesn't laugh much; he talks in a plain tone and always seems to have a poker face. His thoughts also make little sense sometimes.
I can't read his mind because it's always filled with random cartoon girls. I think he calls them 'waifu'. He was a weird guy.
He was a jerk, but he had a considerate side of him which he rarely showed to others. I assumed so, since he brought a futon for me and also has been cooking food for me ever since I came here. I thought it's cute because he assumed that I would eat normal human food.
"So? Tell me your good news?" He sat down on the bed and looked up at me.
"So you successfully completed your first target." I smiled at him.
He looked at me, and he was happy. I could see that on his face. His lips curved a bit. But it was for a slight second. He again turned back to his usual blank expression. He sighed and took out his tucked shirt, unbuttoning the first three buttons. He loosened his tie and took his spectacles off his face.
"Finally?" I could see the uncertainty in his eyes as he asked this question. I nodded as a reply to his question. He took out a deep breath and ran his left hand through his dark brown hairs.
He can hide his expression but not his body's natural reaction.
This was a reaction of his body finally relieving from this constant pressure for a month.
Humans are really afraid of dying.
Though they don't understand that the point of life is death. Life and death are two sides of the same coin. What makes their lives so fulfilled and exciting is the fact that they will die one day.
From the day you're born, you start your journey towards death. Death is inevitable, still humans try so hard to make their lives fulfilled. They are indeed interesting creatures.
I was a devil, so normal rules of life and death didn't apply to me. I've been alive for centuries now. I look like a teenager, that's a different thing.
If I was given a choice between life and death. The answer will be really simple for me.
I would choose death.
I would've preferred dying instead of living through this life. But I can't die even if I wanted to.
"You don't look much happy about this, Devil-chan." He said.
I looked at him and it seems like he noticed me reminiscing about my past. I nodded my head left and right as a gesture to deny what he said. There was no point in hiding my pleasure. I was happy.
"So, this contract thing is complete, right? You'll return to hell, right?"
What?
I guess he thought that the contract only meant one girl.
He got this whole thing wrong.
"No, this is your first target. You'll get many more." I said.
He looked at me, and I could tell that he didn't expect this.
