Chapter 3: Welcome To The Greedland
Chapter 3: Welcome To The Greedland
Countless towering trees flooded the seemingly endless timberland as the rays of the sun almost failed to reach the ground. There were also lakes of grassland where the towering trees didn't stand. Wild animals and beasts were leisurely strolling on the surroundings, seemingly enjoying the presence of life.
The sky was clear with few clouds hanging on it. Many birds dotted into the clear sky as if trying to go against the wind.
But somewhere in the seemingly endless woods was a very huge crater of which no presence of life could be found. Smoke rose from the ground trying to darken the sky.
At the very center of that huge crater was a blinding golden light that shone for a while before vanishing in the next few moments. Unbelievably, as the golden light disappeared, a human was revealed!
He was kneeling on the ground with both of his hands touching on it, seemingly trying to stand up but to no avail. As if he just lost all his energy.
Gasping for air frenziedly, the human muttered in disbelief, "Damn, did I just fall from the sky?"
Falling from that kind of altitude was something that no human would ever survive but in all mystery, he really managed to do so. This really was something that could even defy rational logic and common sense!
After a long moment, as he felt that he already had caught up some breath, the human then pushed up his body from the ground. Standing up in difficulty as he staggered, he then finally managed to do so.
"So I'm really not dreaming huh, I really transmigrated to another world in the most annoying way..." Muttering silently as if complaining about what had just happened to him, the human let out those words the moment he stood up.
The human was of course no other than our protagonist, Sakim! He was completely naked and a fairly built body of a youth with the stature of a head taller than anyone else was revealed. His short and deep black hair swayed with the wind as his deep black eyes gave a faint glint.
Raising his arms in front of his chest, Sakim clenched his hand and closed his eyes, trying to feel his current self.
Something that was happening to him right now was something that never approached in his wildest imagination. Expecting for this kind of afterlife and being transmigrated in a game world or such was really inconceivable for him.
"Thankfully, that yellow thing covered my entire body, if not, I probably have been turned into ashes together with my clothes..." Being grateful for managing to survive, Sakim slowly opened his eyes as he turned his attention to his surroundings.
Sakim found himself at the very center of a big crater but it didn't surprise him that much. Instead, he dug into the knowledge he just received a while ago when he was falling from the sky. It was of course no other than the knowledge related to the System!
Sakim was still worrying about how would he get or use the so-called Game System mentioned by the old woman, but when he fell from the sky, some kind of fragment of memory entered his mind. He thought at first that it was just some kind of imagination but later he realized that it was actually some basic knowledge regarding the System and this world!
"System!" Sakim said calmly. This was the 'magic word' he needed to say in order to summon the System for the first time.
Immediately, something like a screen of a hologram projection appeared in the midair accompanied by a warm welcome saying, "Welcome to the Greedland!"
"Greedland huh... I wonder what kind of place is this..." Sakim nodded his head as he read the words on the screen
According to what he just learned in this world, there were 'seven mainlands' of where humans had dominated and one of those was the Greedland. There were of course countless mainlands in this world but the other races ruled them. And the most dominant races among all the other races who dominated the most lands were the 'Demonic Clan' and 'Angelic Clan!'
Seeing that his starting point was the Greedland, he really wondered what was that place. Only the names of those places where humans were ruling were mentioned from the very limited knowledge he just received. He was really oblivious about any other mainlands of the other races.
"But this stuff, this is really something like what I read in many manga and novels I'd read in my youth days..." Turning his attention to the hologram screen in front of him, Sakim really was a little surprised. He tried to reach his hand to the hologram screen only for his hand to pass through it. Nodding in realization as if it was still within his expectation, Sakim retracted his hand.
But his astonishment didn't last for long as he immediately managed to compose himself. As a human who already saw and had possessed many advanced technologies in his past life, something like this wasn't too surprising that could make his mouth agape in wonder. The only thing that was unique to this was that it was connected to his mind and Sakim admitted that it really was a great invention.
He really wondered how it was done.
Though he wasn't a fan of having this kind of System that every childish people would go crazy into, having a second life wasn't that bad after all. Besides, he felt some kind of calling from this System that as if he was starting to like it.
Or maybe, his sense of excitement had long been dulled as he went older and that sense only returned into him when he was now in the body of youth.
After a few seconds of waiting, the content on the screen changed. And finally, the Welcoming Gift he was expecting to, the gift for the 'New Player' like him who would venture across this world, surfaced on the screen. Something like a gift box icon was displayed on the screen as it slowly opened in itself and another window popped up. He was amazed by the fact that the graphics weren't too bad.
A graphical representation of three consecutive slots could be seen. Each had an icon of another kind of box that seemed waiting to be opened. Its color was brown, white and black respectively. Beneath the three icons were words written in white and were obviously indicating their name.
Beginner's Box, Reward Box, Penalty Box...
Sakim calmly read in his mind the name of the three items as he nodded slowly trying to learn the gist of each of them.
"Open, Beginner's Box," Sakim ordered nonchalantly. The knowledge he received before mentioned that the content of this Beginner's Box was the clothes he would use in his journey and other miscellaneous items. So without expecting anything great from this, another window popped up with the items.
"Blue Shirt equip. Black Pants equip. Wooden Slippers equip. Rusty Sword equip. And this hat... hmmm... I hate hats so I will set this aside for now." Seeing the items he just received and without bothering himself for their stats, Sakim ordered for these items to be equiped. He knew that these items were all trash and the items that would give him some better equipment were the ones that would drop from the monsters he would encounter on his way to the Beginner's Village, Wolf Village.
So just like that, the items materialized so magically and were already covering Sakim's naked body. The [Rusty Sword] had materialized as well and he was now holding it tight. Though he already knew that something like this would happen, he still couldn't help but be amazed by the convenience of wearing the items.
That was something that every lazy people would definitely wish for!
Sakim swung the [Rusty Sword] and to his dismay, it felt like it would break at any moment. It was even worse than what he was expecting.
After which, he checked the clothes and the slippers he was wearing but he could only shake his head as he sighed with a forceful smile. The items given by the System were so ordinary that even he himself was reluctant to wear them. If not for convenience, he would rather choose to go naked instead and walk barefooted.
"Now then, should I open these remaining boxes now?" As he finished checking the items physically without caring for their stats, the window from before vanished and returned to the window that was showing the two remaining boxes.
Sakim turned his attention to it and just by reading the name of these two boxes made him hesitant to open, especially the [Penalty Box].
The knowledge he received lately didn't mention anything significant to these and only mentioned their existence. So naturally, for him who carefully lived his past life and a man who never let others took advantage of him, made him fall into contemplation.
But as hesitant as he was, there was nothing else he could do. He knew that once he opened the other box or rather, the [Reward Box], and ignore the other one instead, it wouldn't be allowed as the [Penalty Box] would open automatically in a given time. The same went for vice versa, no matter which he opened first, the other box would soon be opened.
Knowing these facts, Sakim mustered all his courage with a deep breath as he ordered, "Open Reward Box!"
