Chapter 14 - 14 - Challenge(2)
Chapter 14: - Challenge(2)
Amid the calm, Irys strode over to Liam, her piercing eyes studying him for a moment. "May I see your weapon?" she inquired, her tone a mix of curiosity and genuine intent to help.
Liam, taken aback by the unexpected request, hesitated for a brief moment. In the background of his thoughts, he was reassured by the fact that Talonstrike was bound to him. Even in the worst situation, he could dematerialize it, preventing misuse.
As Liam contemplated, Trick's voice, ever the playful commentator, echoed within his mind, "Other fellows gift flowers to a girl, and here you are, lending your "blade" on the first day! Quite the bold move, aren't you a charmer?" Flustered by Trick's unexpected remark, Liam decided to ignore it
Liam, summoning his Talon Strike, tossed it toward Irys. She caught it with an expert's ease, turning it over in her hands, assessing every inch. "This is a fine weapon," she remarked, her gaze scrutinizing the craftsmanship. "Where did you acquire it? This material is rare even in the Shroud." Before Liam could reply, she waved him off, "Never mind, we're short on time. Share the tale later if you want."
Switching her attention back to the weapon and its usage, she continued, "Liam, you've got a good foundation. But there are redundancies in your movements."
With a motion that suggested years of combat experience, she mimicked a few of Liam's previous moves, highlighting where he could refine his technique. Also, you need to trust your instincts more. In the heat of the battle, you need to let your body react and let your mind concentrate on the bigger picture — spatial awareness is key," she advised.
She then tossed the Talon Strike back to Liam, Her ability to pinpoint his weaknesses amid the chaos of battle impressed him, managed to catch it in time. "Thanks," he murmured, dematerializing the weapon. Inwardly, he pondered her feedback, eager to refine his combat techniques and grow stronger.
Zalya, overhearing their conversation, joined in, "Irys is right. Remember, every second you spend overthinking is a second less you have to respond to a threat." She shared a knowing glance with Irys, their shared experiences evident in their gaze.
Aric chimed in from a few paces away, twirling his double-bladed staff thoughtfully. "Also, notice how we move and anticipate our actions. The better we sync our moves, the more formidable we become as a unit."
Liam nodded in gratitude, "Thanks for the insights," he voiced. Their collective wisdom and shared experiences kindled a warmth within him, deepening the bond he felt with his comrades.
As the last grains of sand trickled down the crystalline hourglass, signaling the end of their brief respite, the gates of the arena groaned open once again. This time, the emerging crystalline soldiers were accompanied by four leaders, each one distinctly larger and more armored than their foot soldiers.
One wields a gleaming spear, its eyes aglow with fierce determination. Another, garbed as a knight, bore a sword and shield, stance unyielding and ready. The third, a ranger, drew an intricately designed crystalline bow, its string humming with tension. The last, a rogue, brandished a wicked dagger, moving with an eerie grace that suggested deadly intent.
The party quickly fell into formation, their previous battle's successes fueling their resolve as they summoned their weapon. Zalya's eyes narrowed as she assessed the new threats, Aric's staff twirled in readiness, Irys flexed her grip on her greatsword, and Liam's mind sharpened.
Zalya's gaze darted across the battlefield, taking in the armored leaders and the crystalline soldiers that spilled forth. As the tactician, her mind worked rapidly, laying out a plan for their assault.
"Irys, focus on clearing the mobs. We need to prevent being overwhelmed." Irys nodded, her blade reflecting the anticipation in her eyes.
"Aric," Zalya continued, "engage the spearman and the knight. Distract and keep them busy." Aric responded with a firm nod, his staff twirling, signaling his readiness.
Turning to Liam, she directed, "Go for the rogue. Find an opportunity to finish him." Liam's eyes locked onto the crystalline rogue, understanding the challenge ahead.
Zalya concluded, "We'll move towards the archer. I'll counter any arrows he releases. Let's force the spearman, knight, and rogue into a tight cluster." The group then starts their action
Aric's sprinted towards the knight, the weight of his staff aimed forward in a thrusting motion. Anticipating a straightforward assault, the knight raised his shield, prepared to absorb the impact. But Aric using his staff as a pivot, he vaulted gracefully over the towering knight.
From the vantage point above, Aric unleashed a molecular crack bomb, its contents splashing onto the knight's gleaming armor. The instant the liquid made contact, it began to sizzle and hiss, emitting tendrils of steam.
The knight, momentarily startled, felt the intensity of the reaction. Cracks started to form on his previously immaculate armor, the sizzling liquid eating away at it, causing it to lose some of its structural integrity and hinder his mobility.
Without missing a beat, Aric dashed to the spearman. His target was the spearman's exposed face. The spearman, reacting just in time, shifted his spear, using the shaft to block Aric's attempt. Metal met crystal in a high-pitched clash,
The battlefield was a maelstrom of chaos, Irys, with a swift motion, she employed her greatsword's broad side as a battering ram. One of the crystalline soldiers, caught off-guard, was thrown backward with immense force, like a cannonball.
But Irys was far from done. As the airborne soldier hurtled towards the group behind the knight, The intricate tattoos on her hand began to emanate a radiant glow, resonating with similar patterns on the hilt of her greatsword. With a mighty heave, she launched the blade directly into the center of the airborne soldier. The force was such that it not only split the soldier in two but also continued its path, embedding itself deep into the earth.
The impact was catastrophic. The ground trembled, and from the point of impact, sharp, jagged shards of rock erupted outward in a radial pattern. These earthen spears speared and maimed any crystalline soldiers unfortunate enough to be in their path, turning a significant portion of the enemy forces into glimmering shards.
With a victorious grin, Irys descended from her leap, manifesting a Warhammer. The massive head of the weapon gleamed with an ominous light. Harnessing the momentum of her fall, she unleashed a devastating blow onto a soldier below, shattering it with an earth-shattering force.
Meanwhile, the spearman, as occupied fending off Aric, his back was exposed. Seizing this opportunity and with the soldiers momentarily stunned, Irys charged forth, aiming to exploit the change. But just as she was about to strike, the knight, despite the cracks spreading across his armor, sprang into action. Using his still-intact shield, he charged toward Irys.
Sensing the imminent threat, Irys quickly pivoted, brandishing her Warhammer in defense. As the knight's shield met her hammer with a resonant clash, the sheer force of the collision sent her spiraling backward.
Mid-air, she expertly twirled, using the weight and her Warhammer against the ground, converting her descent into a controlled landing. Despite the bruises and scars, Irys stand up, a gleam in her eye showing she is having fun. Without wasting a moment, she charged headlong into the crystalline rogue army.
Liam, going in on the crystalline rogue, found his path blocked by its dexterous movements and used the crystalline soldier to block his path. However, taking to heart the insights shared with him earlier, he began to move more fluidly, trusting his instincts to predict the rogue's movement.
Just as he was readying himself for a sprint, Irys charged in, swinging her massive Warhammer with practiced ease. She flung the intervening soldiers out of Liam's path, clearing the way. Spotting an opportunity for teamwork, she placed her Warhammer flat on the ground, acting as a makeshift platform.
Catching her intent, Liam sprinted forward, leaped onto the hammer, and with a well-timed push from Irys, he was catapulted directly toward the rogue, cutting down the distance in an instant as she proceeded to destroy the remaining soldier.
Liam, propelled by the momentum from Irys launch, descended like a meteor, the sharp edges of his Talonstrike aimed directly at the nimble crystalline rogue.
The rogue, with its uncanny agility, quickly sidestepped to evade Liam's impending strike. Undeterred, Liam, in a split second, decided to change tactics. With an acrobatic twirl, he transformed his descent into a spinning vortex of blades, making his trajectory even more unpredictable.
His Talonstrike gleamed ominously as it rotated, catching the ambient light and creating a spectacle of deadly spin. The rogue, despite its quick reflexes, couldn't fully avoid the blow, resulting in talon strike embedded deeply in its shoulder. Landing, Liam felt a little lightheaded, but Soulgear's passive abilities kicked in, granting him clarity as he focused back into the battle.
The rogue retaliates. It lunged at Liam with its dagger, aiming to pierce his defenses. Liam's instincts kicked in. He split his Talonstrike into dual blades; one remained embedded in the rogue's armor while the other parried the dagger's deadly thrust.
Every lunge and stab was met with a parry or close dodge that gave Liam a wound, as his hit also chipped away the rogue armor, their battle becoming a mesmerizing dance of precision and agility. All the while, Trick's voice echoed in his mind, warning of any life-threatening strikes.
At a crucial moment, the rogue is momentarily destabilized from the accumulated damage and the sword embedded in its body. Liam saw his chance. He executed a swift leg sweep, tripping the rogue. Without hesitation, he pounced on the fallen enemy, pinpointing the rogue's core, and in one decisive move, shattered it, ending the fierce fight.
