Chapter 49 - Red Meat
The fire collided with the beast's face. The beast gritted its teeth as it bore the pain. It wasn't granted an easy death, it would be burned alive. It had killed Kristie indeed but it had given him a much merciless death. It had killed him flat with his leg before sucking his resources dry. It was painless… an instant kill that didn't allow him to feel any pain. It felt that it didn't deserve such a death.
But can the beast say that aloud?
Little by little the fireball surrounded the beast's whole body. His face, the tree at its back all burned to cinders. Ashes rose to the roof that was otherwise black giving it a smoky appearance.
"Screech!" The beast couldn't hold back its pain any more as it cried. Its flesh was falling apart as it got roasted and turned black. The fire only slowly crept as it spread to his whole body.
"Damn that was slow, can't expect much from a D class accessory," Klautz said. Real mages are trained to use magic. Understanding the magical laws of this world they are able to manifest it in various forms. But alas, the accessory item could only copy that and can never equate to a true understanding of magic! That is why the charging speed of the fireball was rather low. On top of that the Drus came in its way halting its charge.
"Nevertheless the beast was done for. This move would have been useless against a fast opponent who could have dodged such a move easily."
Klautz nodded as he held onto his chin. He was not completely disappointed. The results were fruitful. The beast is dying.
Meanwhile, the group rejoiced. Klautz appearance and his fireball had proven to be super effective. They found themselves extremely lucky to be able to get out of this mess.
"Wow, he did it again. He is amazing!" Verona cheered as she couldn't hold back her beautiful smile. She had little idea that what she was going to find out next would make her reconsider her words.
Dant who had just realized that the fireball was actually Klautz's power began fearing him more and more.
"If he is here then there should have been a death by now." He looked left and right counting his members. He clasped his hands to his chest.
"Verona is there… so is Bret. The missing one is Kristie."
He scanned the room for red spots and blood traces. How can someone die without splashing blood in such stages? To them it might sound like a joke now if someone were to tell them that people also die from old age or diseases.
Dant didn't found any blood, but to his horror, he found a flattened piece of red meat.
"What the…"
He was lost for words. His face turned ashen as cold sweats started pouring down from his forehead. The meat had bones sticking out from it but there was no blood or skin. To the point that one might doubt that it was even a human or not. The meat was red... the basic color for human meat. Dan't mouth was left agape as his jaw fell. Verona noticed Dant's gaping face. She turned her head following his eyes.
"AH!" She cried in a shrill voice as she uncontrollably shook.
She jumped back in fright. It was such a horrible sight. The face wasn't even recognizable anymore. It is just a piece of flat mass wrapped in the same clothes as Kristie. The axe that Kristie used to use has broken to several places and pierced his body in many, yet there was no sign of any blood. The Drus had sucked him dry, to the point there was nothing left.
"How can this? Were we going to turn in that same state too?" What Verona felt was not pity for Kristie but a deeply ingrained fear. She found herself walking in Kristie's shoes as she imagined that in his place it could be very much herself. Her body shook in fear as she imagined her own body squished and sucked dry by beasts. Nothing could be more horrible for a woman.
Verona's squeaking didn't pass unnoticed to Bret who was equally dumbstruck on witnessing such a scene. His eyes shot out wide to the point of almost popping out.
"I told him to wait! Why did he charge towards the beast?" he shouted in anger. He bit his li[ps. The feeling of powerlessness crept into his mind yet again. It was evident to him that Kristie was squashed under the beast's feet.
He walked towards the body as he held back his tears. He was sniffing his nose to hold back all he could. He caressed the dead body, he felt nothing gross with it, even though normally he would have freaked out.
"No one will cry for you today I promise. You fought gallantly on the battel and died a proud death" Bret held back his tears as he closed his eyes.
"I wonder about that," Dant whispered to himself. He turned towards Klautz as he gazed at him from afar. Narrowing his eyes he said, "This death is more or less either his doing or caused due to his inactions."
*crackle*
*crackle*
The beasts had already reduced to ashes as the majestic flame died down making the last crackle before dictating its disappearance. Not having anything to burn it couldn't help but die out.
Klautz rubbed his ring.
"4 more uses. Not bad for a D rank." He smiled, "But no materials this time."
Whatever was there to the butcher of the beast was already down to ashes there was nothing left for Klautz to pick up.
"Well, I guess I already have enough," Klautz had been butchering every monster he kills for their materials.
