Chapter 62: Chapter 10. The Marquise's Plan
In the greenhouse of the Marquess of Windsor's estate, birds were singing and there was a muted floral fragrance. The good weather foreshadowed the beginning of a successful day, and it was not bad to spend it in such a place.
In the summer gazebo, the view from which opened onto the entire territory of the estate, two people settled down. There were cups of tea and a handful of cakes on the table. Only one of them willingly touched the latter.
«Darling,» the Marquess of Windsor said euphoniously, taking a bite of dessert, «No matter how long it's been since we've had tea here, right?»
Obelia Windsor nodded, lifting her cup to her lips.
— It's because you're constantly busy.
The knight smiled bitterly.
— I have so many things on my shoulders that I can't even devote time to my wife. I'm sorry about that.
The woman shook her head understandingly.
— of course. I understand how difficult it is for you.
The couple fell silent at the same time, interrupting to admire nature. She was really beautiful this morning.
Then, the Marquess of Windsor added:
— Recently, worries have only increased. But I'm glad of it.
«You mean the two you brought into our house?»
He nodded.
— So it is… if everything works out, then we will be able to realize our plans this year.
The Marquise was surprised.
«So fast?» «Are you sure we shouldn't wait a little longer?» she asked.
— Wait for what? — the man muttered, — I'm tired of it now. And the people of our country, too. How long will we be enslaved to Azeroth?
Obelia paused.
«Even so, you shouldn't rush into such a decision. There are too many lives of our people at stake.»
«They are all brave warriors,» the Marquis objected, «I know my people better. They would rather give their lives on the battlefield than continue to be in this position.»
The woman didn't say anything while her husband took another bite.
«Are you… going to use them?» «What is it?» she asked softly.
— Until we get strong enough, this is the only way to make those people stop,» the knight agreed, «Their children are our main weapon.»
— Are you really sure that this will be enough to stabilize our power?
— Quite.
Her husband's answer startled the Marquise without any hesitation. In such an important matter, the man had no doubts about losing. Simply put, he did not even consider the option in which the king and his right hand could simply abandon their children, for the good of the country.
But Obelia did not understand what such a belief was based on.
«Is there something you haven't told me?» — she suggested.
The Marquess of Windsor hesitated.
— Honey, what are you talking about? — he joked, — Of course, I don't have any secrets from you.
The woman sighed.
— I'm just confident in our victory, that's all, — the husband decided to sum up.
— And yet… — said Obelia doubtfully, — Let's say the coup turns out well. You will be king. Then will you let them go?
— I will do it when I am sure that our empire has surpassed Azeroth.
— What…? — she asked again.
«Until we can give equal resistance to those people, their heirs will be the only way to keep Oberon safe.»
— And how long will it take?
— Hmm… who knows. Maybe five years, or ten. Anyway, sooner or later, I will achieve this.
The Marchioness of Windsor was struck by the ambitions of her husband.
— So you can hold them as hostages for almost ten years?!
Noticing the concern on his wife's face, the knight frowned.
— Why are you so worried about them? — he inquired, — I noticed it even then. They're just a tool, but you're so concerned about their safety.
— I…
— And especially about the Archduke's daughter,» the Marquis remarked, «Why did you suddenly become so protective of a strange girl you met for the first time?» Have you seen her before?
— Of course not,» she said, «how could I have known her?» Of course, this is impossible.
The Marquis did not take his eyes off her.
— But then…
— It's just that you don't understand a mother's heart. For me, all children who are in danger are equal.
«They'll be eighteen soon,» the Marquis reminded her.
«It doesn't matter to me.»
The man sighed.
— Okay.… I already made concessions when I allowed them to live outside the dungeon. For hostages, these two have quite good conditions.
— And I'm grateful to you for that.
The knight chuckled.
— I could not imagine that my wife has such a soft heart.
The Marquise said nothing, and for a while they continued drinking tea in silence. Meanwhile, the man drew attention to the wristwatch, and remembered that he was about to get to work. He was going to take his leave and say goodbye to his wife, but she stopped him.
— Wait. I wanted to ask you something.
— Hmm?
«Can I… take this girl for a walk with me tomorrow?»
— what? — the Marquis was surprised, — Why is this?
— There's a reception at our estate next week,» Obelia reminded, «I thought I'd get a new dress for the occasion.»
The man nodded understandingly.
— Yes, exactly… But why do you want to take her with you?
The Marquise smiled.
— It's pretty boring to walk around the city alone. I thought she might keep me company.
The Marquess of Windsor was doubtful, but his wife confidently stated:
— Don't worry, everything will be fine. I'll keep an eye on her.
He sighed.
— Okay.… If that's how you want it, then I can make an exception. Just in case, I'll send knights to guard you.
The woman nodded.
After the Marquis left the gazebo, she stared after him for a long time. Imperceptibly squeezed the folds of the dress under the table.
«…Don't even think that I'm going to let Emily's daughter be used in your plans.»
***
The next day I suddenly found out that the Marquise of Windsor had decided to make me her escort on a walk into the city.
Such news stunned me early in the morning, but however, I did not think to refuse. It's been a month since the Windsors made us servants in their house. And since then, the maximum where I went outside the estate was the Maxi training ground.
I was glad to go out somewhere and unwind.
After learning that it was her mother's decree, Maxie had to put up with it and let me go for the whole day. Immediately after breakfast, we got into a carriage and headed to the capital of the empire of Oberon — Lumos.
The Marquis' estate was very close to the city, and therefore we had to get there in a couple of hours. The carriage was also accompanied by guards, who turned out to be even more than I had imagined. They were right behind us.
The Marquise and I were on opposite sides of the seats, but I kept noticing her eyes on me.
— Madam, is something wrong? I decided to ask.
— Oh, no… I was just thinking about something.
I didn't ask any more questions.
Obelia Windsor smiled.
— Your eyes… Reminded me of the past.
«My eyes…?» I was surprised.
— The same as hers.
Such an answer remained extremely incomprehensible, but I assumed that I could just remind her of an old acquaintance. It was in the order of things.
— Thank you for taking me with you today, — I sincerely thanked.
«No problem,» she replied with the same smile.
When the carriage arrived at its destination, the Marquise and I got out and went to the place where she wanted to buy a dress.
Lumos turned out to be quite a beautiful city, although it was inferior in scale to the capital of Azeroth. However, I was still glad that I was able to visit here. Anything is better than being locked up.
The woman spent a long time choosing an outfit in a boutique, and I patiently waited for her in the lobby. In the end, when she settled on an elegant burgundy dress that perfectly matched her scarlet hair, the main purpose of our trip was completed.
While the Marchioness of Windsor was doing the fitting, I noticed that she looked very good for her age. It can be said that Maxie's mother was very much like herself when she became more mature. However, the innate elegance was still the dignity of the marquise.
When we finished shopping, we left the store and the woman wanted to take a little more walk. The guards behind us were still an integral shadow of this trip.
We wandered through the streets of the capital for half an hour, and during this time I looked at the city with interest. Until then, the Marquise suddenly stopped.
— Guys, could you leave us? — she turned with a smile to the four knights who followed us almost in a tail.
— Madam, it was the Marquis' order,» the chief of them objected, «We must accompany you on the road.»
«I know,» Obelia interrupted him gently, «but surely you're tired too?» It's okay if we're alone for a while.»
They looked at each other uncertainly.
— But you can't do that! The master ordered…
— I won't tell my husband anything, — the woman assured, — Right now, he's already very busy. There is no need to add such minor troubles.
«Mistress, but for your safety…»
— I know the city like the back of my hand. Besides, everyone here knows me. No one would dare to attack the first marquise of the empire.
The words of the hostess sounded convincing, and the knights gradually gave up.
«T-then we can wait for you in the carriage… Please tell me right away if you need our help!»
— Yes, of course,» the Marchioness of Windsor beamed at them.
The men eventually left. The Marquise watched them leave for a long time. And after making sure that no one else was watching us, she turned in my direction.
«Listen carefully,» she said seriously.
— Y-yes?
The woman suddenly grabbed me by the shoulders and looked me in the eye.
— When I count to three, you will immediately run away from here…!
