Chapter 46: Grimruk's Allegiance

Canna was resting on a spot of the dungeon when he heard footsteps getting closer

He opened his eyes to see Grimruk approaching, he sat up and looked at the orc

"Grimruk," Canna greeted softly, acknowledging the orc's presence.

Grimruk halted a few paces away, his gaze fixed on Canna. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he was about to say. "Canna, I... I need to speak with you."

Canna nodded, gesturing for Grimruk to sit beside him. "Of course. What is it?"

Grimruk hesitated for a moment before lowering himself to the ground, his gaze never leaving Canna's face. "After witnessing today's battle... after seeing what you and your companions are capable of... I have come to a decision."

Canna furrowed his brow, unsure of where Grimruk was leading. "A decision?"

Grimruk took a deep breath, his voice steady but tinged with a rare vulnerability. "I have decided to pledge my allegiance to you, Canna."

Canna blinked in surprise, taken aback by Grimruk's unexpected declaration. "Allegiance?"

"Yes," Grimruk continued, his tone firm. "I want to fight alongside you, to see more of your strength and determination. You have a vision, a purpose that transcends mere survival. I want to be a part of that."

Canna searched Grimruk's eyes, seeing the sincerity and earnestness in his gaze. He felt a swell of conflicting emotions—gratitude, uncertainty, and a burgeoning sense of responsibility.

"Grimruk..." Canna began, his voice quiet yet filled with emotion. "I appreciate your offer. But this path I walk... it's not an easy one. It's filled with danger and uncertainty. Are you sure you want to pledge yourself to it?"

Grimruk nodded solemnly. "I am. I've thought long and hard about this. I believe in you, Canna. I believe in what you're striving to achieve. And I want to stand by your side, no matter the cost."

Canna felt a lump form in his throat, deeply moved by Grimruk's words. He reached out, clasping Grimruk's forearm in a gesture of solidarity. "Then, welcome, Grimruk. Your allegiance means more to me than I can express."

A rare smile tugged at Grimruk's lips, a flicker of relief and pride crossing his features. "Thank you, Canna. I won't let you down."

Canna and Grimruk sat in the quiet corner of the dungeon, the dim torchlight casting flickering shadows around them.

"So, Grimruk," Canna began, his voice gentle yet curious. "Tell me more about your tribe, the black orcs. I've always wondered about your people."

Grimruk paused, considering his words carefully before speaking. "We are a nomadic tribe, master. We roam the lands in search of food. Our taste buds are... different. We can only taste spicy foods.

Anything else tastes like leaves to us."

Canna raised an eyebrow, intrigued by this revelation. "Spicy foods, huh? That explains why you always reach for the hottest meats, well that's the only food we have here anyways"

Grimruk nodded, a faint smile touching his lips. "Indeed. It's a curse and a blessing, I suppose."

As the day wore on, Canna delved deeper into Grimruk's past, learning of the hardships he endured. His heart sank to hear how Grimruk had been enslaved and how he had offered himself in exchange for his tribe's freedom.

"I'm sorry you had to go through that, Grimruk," Canna said softly, his empathy evident in his voice.

Grimruk shrugged nonchalantly, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of pain. "It is what it is, master. We all have our scars."

Their conversation took an unexpected turn when Grimruk shared something unique about him.

"When I was young, my mother and the elders of our tribe... they were harsh. They beat me, punished me. They were all women. I grew up believing all women were like that, so I avoid any woman no matter what race." Grimruk's expression darkened slightly, his gaze distant.

Canna nodded understandingly, a pang of sadness tugging at his heart. "I'm sorry you had to endure that, Grimruk. Not all women are like that, you know."

Grimruk grunted in response, seemingly unconvinced. He shifted uncomfortably, clearly wanting to change the subject.

Before they parted ways for the evening, Canna had one last curiosity he couldn't resist. "Grimruk, do you mind if I take a look at your stats? I'm curious about your abilities."

Grimruk hesitated, then nodded. "Of course master. Here."

_______________

Tonitrum watched at the far end of the dungeon, hidden in the shadows cast by the flickering torchlight. His gaze was fixed on Canna and Grimruk, who sat in earnest conversation. A small smile played on his lips, a rare expression of satisfaction that creased his scaly face.

He had orchestrated this meeting since Boran's team entered the dungeon, subtly nudging Grimruk towards Canna was easy, knowing the potential power that lay in the black orc's allegiance. Black orcs were not only a rare species, they were also formidable, their strength unmatched by many of the same ranking.

Tonitrum understood the value of such a warrior joining Canna's forces, especially with Vorgrim's influence aiding the process.

As he observed them, Tonitrum reminisced about his own past, the mistakes made and the lessons learned too late. "Strength beside you," he muttered to himself, "that's what makes the difference."

In his long years trapped within these dungeon walls, Tonitrum had learned the hard way that alliances and allegiances were as crucial as swords and spells. He had been betrayed once by those he trusted, left to languish in isolation. Now, watching Canna and Grimruk, he saw a chance for redemption, a small hope that history might not repeat itself.

"For now," Tonitrum murmured, his voice barely audible in the echoing chamber, "I'll do what I can to ensure Canna's strength grows. Perhaps... perhaps I'll witness something entertaining once more."

With a final glance at the duo in the distance, Tonitrum turned and went back to sleep again, his mind already plotting the next steps in improving his 'entertainment'.
