Chapter 107: Verdant Wardens
The Verdant Wardens, a group known for their deep connection with nature and their mastery of ancient magic, entered Canna's domain with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity. As they crossed the threshold, their eyes widened in disbelief at what lay before them.
Thousands upon thousands of groundhogs scurried across the open fields, their small forms darting in and out of the carefully constructed pens. Just beyond them, countless horned hares, with their sleek bodies and prominent horns, grazed peacefully in separate enclosures. The sheer number of creatures was overwhelming, and the Verdant Wardens exchanged astonished glances.
"This... this is incredible," one of the elders murmured, her voice tinged with awe. "How could he have gathered so many?"
Canna, standing a short distance away, noticed their reactions and approached calmly. "They're for future food supply," he explained, his tone casual. "I'm planning ahead. If the sanctuary is to thrive, I'll need to ensure we have enough resources to support everyone."
The Verdant Wardens nodded, though their surprise was far from fading. As they ventured deeper into the domain, the vastness of it began to dawn on them. The sprawling landscape stretched out in every direction, seemingly endless. Yet, for all its size, the majority of the land was barren, cracked earth and dry soil marking the ground.

It was a stark contrast to the lush pens they had just passed, and the sight of it left the Verdant Wardens with a sinking feeling.
The elders gathered together for a discussion, their voices low as they debated what they had seen. Kael, ever the diplomat, joined them, hoping to gain insight into their thoughts and to ensure that the situation didn't escalate further.
"This domain... it's far larger than we anticipated," one elder said, her brow furrowed. "But the barrenness... it's troubling. Why is so much of it left like this?"
Kael nodded, understanding their concern. "It's part of the reason we came to you," he explained. "Canna's goal is to revitalize this land, to bring it back to life. But we need help. Your magic, your knowledge of nature—it's what we've been searching for."
The elders exchanged glances, their expressions thoughtful. They continued their discussion for hours, weighing the potential benefits and risks of aligning themselves with Canna. Meanwhile, Canna himself had retreated to a cave deep within the domain, where Stormy, his baby dragon, resided. Nyx, his shadow bear, lay beside him, sensing his master's need for solitude.
Inside the cave, the atmosphere was calm, almost serene. Canna leaned against the cool stone wall, staring up at the cave's ceiling as his mind replayed the events of the past few days. His thoughts were heavy with the weight of his responsibilities, and for a moment, he allowed himself to simply exist, free from the burdens of leadership.
Tiberius, not one to sit idle, had sought out Grimruk for guidance. The towering black orc, despite his intimidating appearance, had proven to be a formidable and wise mentor. Tiberius was eager to learn from him, to enhance his skills as a warrior, and to find a way to contribute more effectively to Canna's cause.
Hours passed in this way, with everyone pursuing their own tasks. Eventually, Kael made his way to the cave, his expression one of cautious optimism. Canna, sensing his approach, sat up and looked at him expectantly.
"Canna," Kael began, his voice breaking the silence, "I've got some good news... and a bit of bad news."
Canna's gaze sharpened, and he nodded for Kael to continue.
"The good news is that the Verdant Wardens have agreed to help. They've mentioned that their magic, which lies beneath their village, allows them to move the entire settlement if necessary. They're willing to relocate the village here, but it will take at least three weeks."
Canna exhaled, a small weight lifting from his shoulders. "That's more than I could have hoped for. What's the bad news?"
Kael hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "They want a formal meeting with you, to discuss your ideals and goals. They've accepted you as their master, but they need to understand your vision, to see if it aligns with theirs. They're particularly interested in your plans for this sanctuary."
Canna sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as he processed the information. "I was worried they'd be guarded against me," he admitted. "But it sounds like they're open to working together. I just need to be clear with them."
"Mortem," he called out, and in an instant, a shadow detached from his own, revealing the grey-robed figure. "Send them a message that we can have the formal meeting tomorrow early morning. For now, I'd like to rest here a little longer."
Mortem nodded and vanished as quickly as he had appeared. Canna then turned to Kael. "Let them do whatever they want in the domain. I don't want to restrict their every movement. Just keep them away from Stormy's cave—if they disturb him, their village might really be destroyed."
Kael chuckled softly at the remark. "Understood. You've done a lot, Canna. Let me handle the rest. You deserve some time to yourself."
Canna offered a small smile. "Thanks, Kael. I owe you one."
The next morning, the elders of the Verdant Wardens arrived at the designated meeting spot, a makeshift area within the domain. The Verdant Wardens worked swiftly, using their magic to craft elegant chairs from the surrounding wood and vines, creating a natural and serene setting for the discussion. Flora sat in the center, her presence commanding but no longer hostile.
Canna, however, simply used wind magic to create an invisible seat, a subtle display of his power.
The meeting began with introductions, the elders formally presenting themselves to Canna. They spoke of their long history, their connection to the land, and their dedication to preserving nature's balance.
Flora, after a moment's pause, addressed Canna directly. "We are aware that you are a Harbinger, Canna Yakane. It is a title that carries with it a heavy burden, one often associated with destruction. But we have seen that your intentions may not align with the chaos we feared. Tell us, what is your true goal?"
Canna took a deep breath, his gaze steady as he looked at the assembled Verdant Warden elders. "My goal has always been to revitalize this domain, to bring life back to this barren land. I want to create a sanctuary—a place where those who cannot fight can find refuge, where rare monsters, plants, and trees can thrive without fear of extinction."
The Verdant Wardens listened intently, their expressions softening as they absorbed his words.
"I know that as a Harbinger, I am expected to bring chaos and destruction," Canna continued, his voice calm and resolute. "But that is not the path I have chosen. I seek to preserve, not destroy. The groundhogs and horned hares you saw—they are a part of that plan. They live peacefully here, with undead assigned to ensure that everything runs smoothly in the pens.
It's all part of building a sustainable future."
The elders exchanged glances, their skepticism slowly fading. Flora, who had been the most wary of Canna, found herself surprised by the sincerity in his voice.
"We did not expect such a vision from a Harbinger," one of the elders admitted. "We assumed you would seek to conquer or destroy, but your desire to create a sanctuary is... unexpected."
Canna nodded. "I understand your hesitation. But know this—I am committed to this goal. If you choose to join me, I promise that together, we can achieve something truly remarkable."
The Verdant Wardens fell silent, each of them contemplating Canna's words. After a few moments, Flora stood, her expression one of newfound respect.
"I apologize for my earlier actions," she said, bowing her head slightly. "I let fear cloud my judgment. You have shown us a path that aligns with our own values, and for that, I am grateful. We will do our best to assist you in this endeavor."
Canna nodded, accepting her apology with grace. "Thank you, Flora. With your help, I believe we can create something that will stand the test of time."
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with the Verdant Wardens expressing their willingness to help Canna achieve his vision. As they left the makeshift area, Flora turned to Canna one last time.
"I swear my loyalty to you, Canna Yakane," she said, her voice firm. "We will stand by your side, and together, we will build this sanctuary."
Canna smiled, feeling a sense of relief and satisfaction. The journey had been long and fraught with challenges, but at that moment, he knew they were on the right path. With the Verdant Wardens by his side, the dream of creating a sanctuary was closer than ever.
