Chapter 76 Too Arrogant For His Own Good
Blood pounded in her ears and her heartbeat was so loud that everything in her head sounded like a torrent of water that brandished at a reef.
Tears continued to trickle down her cheeks as the heavy body of the Elite Shedim crashed on the ground with a thud. The Arcane Kunai shot back to Liam, who had appeared a few meters next to Felicia. He looked coldly over at her, analyzing her wounds before he turned his head away.
"Go over to Rex and Jennie," He added while his eyes moved over to Kian, who had just run the sprint of his life. Kian had killed the other Elite Shedim merely a quarter of a second after Liam's Arcane Kunai pierced through the Elite Shedim's head.
Kian had used his Soultrait to its limit. This consumed a tremendous amount of Arcane Power but it also allowed Kian to cross a distance of over 50 meters in two seconds. That exceeded the limitation of his body by far, yet Kian endured the strain in a desperate attempt to rescue Felicia.
It worked out as expected, but it was not as if the battle was over. Only by surviving the rest of the battle would it be possible for him to consider his rescue mission successful. After all, one couldn't consider a rescue mission successful if the victim died as the aftermath of the actions that led to the rescue. Felicia was not yet in a more secure area either.
Liam didn't pay this any attention, knowing that the others would take care of Felicia. She was injured, but they were not severe. Her mind was likely to have the brunt of the attack. This was something he noticed at the first glance.
However, the battle was not yet over, and it was not as if Liam would try to help Felicia out of her misery. She would have to get her act together and understand that a single mistake of hers and even the action of another person could lead to her death. This included the actions of her own comrades. Felicia had witnessed this first-hand and the others had seen everything quite clearly as well. Most were shocked, except Liam whose focus had already returned to the battlefield, and Ludwig, whose attention had never been disrupted in the first place.
In the following ten minutes, the climax of the battle died down and the last dozens of Lesser Demons in the underground hall were getting slaughtered. Liam slowed down his fighting speed. He was still focused on the strongest of the Lesser Demons and was determined on killing them one after another. His attacks combined with the Black Tarthear Needles, Lumina Needles, and the Arcane Kunai were more than enough to defeat even the most annoying Mutant Elite Shedim.
"I defeated you!" Ludwig declared proudly when Liam looked around to see if there were any more Lesser Demons to kill. The entire battle didn't even last an hour. That was pretty good, especially if one were to look at the combat prowess Ludwig had shown. Liam knew that Ludwig had been quite powerful and that his strength had increased after his body hungrily devoured the Arcane Power of the surroundings. And it surged inside his body as well as if he was a natural storage for it.
That was pretty interesting, but Liam ignored Ludwig as he understood that the Native was still being controlled by the Arcane Power and adrenaline that continued to surge through him. Ludwig was bleeding out of his eyes and a crazed smile had appeared on his lips.
'I didn't expect to see someone with an Overload so soon,' Liam just thought while his eyes moved over to the others, who were focused on tending to the wounds Felicia had sustained.
He didn't think that there was a need for him to say anything. From the looks of it, they were doing perfectly fine. They had already disinfected the wound with a special disinfectant cream to clean the infections caused by Lesser Demons, a bunch of tight bandages and some other goods that may or may not be helpful.
Knowing that his ducklings were fine, Liam began to collect the corpses of the Lesser Demons, while paying attention not to collect the corpses whose lives had been reaped by Ludwig. Ludwig glared at Liam, which was enough to tell Liam that it would soon be time to kill the native. Ludwig was actually getting too arrogant for his own good and his time was ticking. That was not only what Liam thought, but it was quite literally what happened.
Ludwig had gotten too arrogant for his own good!
Feeling exhilarated and as if nothing would ever be able to oppose a powerhouse like him, Ludwig turned to the open gateway that led to the second hall, where the Boss Monster of the underground tower was waiting patiently.
"And I will defeat the Lesser Demons over there, as well!" Ludwig shouted out loud, seemingly in an attempt to attract some attention from the people around him by boasting about his prowess. He was still under the influence of the Arcane Power and adrenaline surged through him as he bellowed, "All by myself, you motherfuckers!!"
Ludwig pointed over to the second hall where a bunch of Mutant Elite Shedim and Canine Shedim surrounded a much larger Shedim who seemed to be waiting for the raiders to come and get him. At least that was what it looked like to Ludwig.
Liam looked up with his Soultrait activated. He stared at the gateway and squinted his eyes when he saw something in the spot Ludwig was just about to step on.
"I would be more carefu—...." Liam began, just to shut his mouth tightly when his Devil's Eyes discerned that Ludwig had already activated an old-fashioned trap that couldn't be detected with Arcane Power.
'It seems like this problem solved itself just now…' He thought, figuring that he had worried too much for no apparent reason. His problems were solved even before he did something.
Ludwig's Arcane Power had been spread out through the entire gateway that was not even fifty meters wide. It had enough space to let Liam and the six Natives walk next to each other and also leave some room for them to move around to fight.
However, none of that attracted Liam's attention as he stared at Ludwig, who had just stepped upon the trigger of the old-fashioned trap.
A huge boulder carved out of basalt hurtled down to the ground with terrific speed. Liam could barely discern the boulder as it fell straight onto the trap's trigger.
As for Ludwig, Liam couldn't see him anymore.
The only thing he could barely discern was blood, and a Black Steel Halbert hanging on the last remnants of a hand, Ludwig's Hand.
And Ludwig…well Ludwig…he got mashed into a pulp.
