Rebirth of a Farming Wife

Chapter 480: 487: What to Do

Chapter 480: Chapter 487: What to Do

“My subordinate only heard the maid’s cry of alarm. The horse carriage was some distance away, and since that maid screamed, there has been no sign of movement from the carriage where Madam Su and her child were sitting. Perhaps there really is no one inside,” said the man in black. Although he was mostly certain that Su Wenyue and her child were not inside the carriage, since he had not seen it with his own eyes, he could not state this with complete certainty.

“Damn it, there must have been a problem during that quarter-hour stop we made on the road. I knew there was a reason they stopped seemingly without cause; they must have been fixing the road while secretly shifting funds, allowing Su Wenyue and her child to leave quietly. It must be one of Master Su’s strategies, truly a cunning old fox,” the leading man in black said bitterly.

“Boss, what should we do now? Our superiors have given us a death order— if we fail to capture Su Wenyue and her child, we all shall be dealt with,” another man in black by the leader’s side asked anxiously.

“What else can we do but immediately go after Su Wenyue and her child? What use is following these old folks? We can’t turn them in to complete the mission!” the leading man in black said irritably, his tone filled with frustration and impatience.

“But none of us saw anyone in the carriage. We’re only acting on the maid’s words. It could also be that old man’s trick to deceive us, making sure we don’t follow,” said another man in black. Having failed in their task, they did not spare any feelings, speaking openly and without reserve about what was on their minds.

“That may be true, but what exactly do we do? Boss, why don’t we just settle this once and for all and take care of these two old folks first?” another impatient man in black suggested.

“Shut up! What nonsense is that? The reinforcements sent by our superiors haven’t arrived yet; with just the few of us, you want to take them on? Do you think these old men are pushovers? Otherwise, they wouldn’t have such a reputation in the business world. Besides, the Su Family comes from the Marquis Bei’an Mansion; even a rotten ship has three pounds of nails. Though the Su Family is now merely a merchant family, who knows what tricks they have up their sleeves? If we don’t get rid of the targets and instead get ourselves into trouble, that would be too foolish,” the leader scolded. He was anxious but still rational; he knew there were some things they could and could not do. They had to wait for the reinforcements before engaging in a direct confrontation.

“So are we going to keep following them and wait for reinforcements before making a move?”

“Not necessarily. To find out if Su Wenyue and her child are in the carriage, we don’t have to fight them directly. Just send someone to lift the curtain of the carriage and take a look,” the leader instructed, sending a few experts from the group to cooperate and accomplish this task.

Mr. and Mrs. Su, hidden in the shadows, prepared themselves for a desperate struggle when they saw those men suddenly take action. However, the men in black just made a feint, approaching the carriage with a tactic of creating noise in the east and striking in the west. They lifted the curtain, saw that there were no people inside, signaled to their companions, and immediately withdrew.

Facing a close call, Mr. and Mrs. Su were not relieved. It was evident that those people were after Su Wenyue and her child, so seeing that they were not in the carriage, they withdrew so quickly, most likely to pursue them.

“Master, they must be going after our daughter and grandson. What shall we do?” Madam Su said anxiously as she saw the men in black retreat.

Master Su was also deeply worried, unable to comprehend how their plans had been exposed so soon. He had intended to lead the enemy further away so that his daughter and grandson could be safe. However, an error had occurred. Thinking of the main culprits for this situation, Master Su’s expression turned serious, and his gaze became piercing as he turned to the maid responsible for the outcome.

“Speak! Who sent you? Why did you betray us and deliberately reveal the whereabouts of the Madam and Young Master Miss? Do not lie, tell the truth, or do not blame me for being ruthless!”

The maid, pressured by Master Su’s imposing aura, trembled with fear, feeling truly wronged. She did not have the courage to betray her mistress.

“Master, please do not misunderstand. I would never dare to betray you. What happened just now was in accordance with the orders of Madam,” the maid hurriedly explained, fearing Master Su’s wrath.

“What did you say? This was your Madam’s intention?” Master Su asked in disbelief, unable to understand why his daughter would do such a thing, risking her own safety and that of her child. However, after a brief consideration, he understood the reason— his daughter must have sensed the danger and did not want her elderly parents to face it, hence her arrangement.

Thinking of this, Master Su was both worried and in a hurry, his feelings conflicted. He hoped his daughter and grandson were safe, yet he felt comforted by his daughter’s concern for him and his wife. Nonetheless, he could not stand the thought of his daughter and grandson coming to harm.

“It was the instruction of the Madam before she left. I am the Madam’s servant, I heed only her commands.”

This maid’s ‘loyalty’ left Master Su both frustrated and resentful. Looking at the simple-minded girl in front of him, he understood why his daughter had entrusted this task to such a maid.

Madam Su immediately guessed the reason for her daughter’s actions as well and began to cry with worry, incessantly wiping away her tears and feeling extremely anxious.

“Master, what shall we do? Lady Yue took three children with her, and they are certainly no match for those men. If they fall into their hands, what will we do? Our foolish daughter! If something happens to her and the children, what point will there be for us to go on living?”

Although Master Su was worried, being a man, he was somewhat calmer than Madam Su: “Madam, worrying now is useless. What we’ll do is, I will send some people to take you to the Feng family, and the rest will come with me to rescue our daughter and grandson. Since our daughter made such an arrangement, there must be a reason, and she should be able to hold them off for a while, until we can reach and rescue her.”

When the maid heard Master Su say this, she spoke up: “Master, you and Madam cannot go; this is the letter left behind by Madam. Once you read it, you will understand.”

“What? Lady Yue has left a letter? Why didn’t you say so sooner!” Master Su became truly angry, shooting a stern glance at the heedless maid. He snatched the letter she produced from her sleeve and immediately opened it.

After reading the content of the letter, Master Su’s expression changed. Madam Su, watching anxiously by his side, couldn’t wait and asked, “Master, what does our daughter say in the letter?”

Master Su lacked the strength to relay the message, looking disheartened as he handed the letter to his wife for her to read the content herself. He couldn’t fathom why his daughter would come up with such a foolish plan on the spur of the moment— labeled as wise, she thought of such an idea in so little time.
