Chapter 81: Chapter 75 Zhan Qipei Disagrees to Divorce

Zhan Nanqing followed suit, kicking her while she was down, “Exactly, you still have the nerve to sit here. Wasn’t it my brother who got you out of the police station? Considering the gravity of your crime, he must have spent a fortune.”

Zhan Nanqing didn’t mention it, and Su Manhan hadn’t thought of that aspect until then.

Now that she thought about it, no wonder Qiao Jing could sit here unscathed, it turned out her son had spent money to bail her out.

“Qipei, why did you rescue her? You should’ve let her rot in jail for life! People like her are just parasites in society, wasting national resources!” Su Manhan’s words grew uglier with each sentence.

Zhan Qipei couldn’t stand it anymore.

“Mom, you’ve misunderstood her, things aren’t as you think.”

Next, Zhan Qipei explained in detail everything Qiao Jing had told him to Su Manhan and the others.

“Brother, stop defending her, her helping Captain Zhao solve a case? What a joke! A woman from the countryside, how could she possibly solve a case? And it’s the recent serial child abduction case. Captain Zhao and his team have been tracking it for so long without a breakthrough, and you tell me Qiao Jing helped solve it, who would believe such a lie?”

“You don’t need to make subjective judgments about this. If you don’t believe it, just go to the police station and ask yourselves,” Zhan Qipei stepped forward, positioning himself in front of Qiao Jing, shielding her from the hostile gazes thrown by Su Manhan and Zhan Nanqing.

Su Manhan and Zhan Nanqing realized then that Zhan Qipei was determined to protect Qiao Jing at all costs.

“Qipei, I’m your mother! Are you really going to side with an outsider against me?” Su Manhan’s words were not so much a question as they were a heartbreak.

Her own son, whom she had raised, was siding with a stranger he had known for merely a few days against her. How could that not break her heart?

Zhan Qipei furrowed his brows; he truly felt the dilemma stuck between his mother and his wife.

“I side with justice, not kinship, and besides, the reality of this matter is indeed as I just described.”

Su Manhan plopped onto the sofa, lamenting loudly, “What kind of son did I raise? They say sons are raised for other women—I never believed it, but now I see clearly. Sons indeed forget their mothers once they have a wife; what kind of karma is this! Why did I have to end up with such a disaster of a daughter-in-law?”

“Mom, don’t be angry, it’s bad for your health. Your health hasn’t been good lately, and brother didn’t mean to talk back to you,” Zhan Nanqing reached out, patting Su Manhan’s back, trying to calm her down.

Zhan Qipei looked back at Qiao Jing; as a man, he was determined to keep his word. He had said earlier he would protect her, and he would definitely do so until the end.

“Mom, please go back first. I will investigate this matter thoroughly and give you an explanation,” he said.

These words from Zhan Qipei deeply wounded Su Manhan. She lifted her head, eyes brimming with tears, looking at Zhan Qipei incredulously.

“You want to drive me away? Am I in your way? Disturbing you? Ah, Qipei, my dear son! Tell me, why did I rush here in such a hurry? Isn’t it because you are my son? Yet, you treat me like this for an outsider? Ah, I might as well die! I can’t live like this!”

Zhan Yao clenched his jaw, his face a horrific shade of purple, “Qipei, you shouldn’t have spoken like that earlier. Although mom’s words were a bit extreme, she said them because she cares about you, as her son.”

Zhan Qipei was incredibly frustrated, thinking this issue could have been easily resolved, yet here was his mother making a scene.

He was now curious if all men around the world experienced this?

Later on, Zhan Qipei found out that he was actually quite fortunate because, at least, Qiao Jing was rational. Normally, in other families, it’s the mother crying and the wife making a scene, with the man stuck miserably in the middle.

Qiao Jing’s gaze stayed on Zhan Qipei; honestly, if she were in his shoes, she would be just as exasperated.

On one hand was reason, and on the other, his loving birth mother.

Forget it.

He didn’t need her protection anymore.

Qiao Jing stood up, looking at Su Manhan, “If you insist on believing I broke the law, I’m too tired to explain. Since the divorce was proposed by your family, let’s go through with it then.”

What did she say?!

Zhan Qipei suddenly looked towards Qiao Jing, his face instantly covered in a thick layer of frost.

Su Manhan stopped crying and creating a scene, staring at Qiao Jing with unbelieving eyes, “Are you serious?”

Qiao Jing nodded solemnly, “As long as you can handle it with Grandpa Zhan, let’s end this marriage today.”

Su Manhan and Zhan Nanqing couldn’t be happier, while Zhan Qipei’s face turned as black as the bottom of a pot.

“I, do, not, agree!”

These four words almost burst through Zhan Qipei’s clenched teeth.

The moment Zhan Qipei spoke, everyone, whether Qiao Jing or Su Manhan, stared at him in shocked disbelief.
