Chapter 5: Next steps
Chapter 5: Next steps
When morning came, Terry clicked his tongue... he overslept. It was close to noon already. He didn't realize that he was tired while he practiced with the crossbow. He went to sleep at four in the morning, thinking that he would get up four hours later. His guess was as bad as it could have been...
Fire Crossbow Lv 03 (01/40 EXP) (Common)
Magic Power: 08
Cost: 05 MP
Durability: 12/12
Although the level of the weapon didn't decrease the cost of usage, Terry got other rewards. The range increased according to the magic power of the weapon, so he was satisfied with that. Tonight, he will make it reach level five and see what will happen.
In any case, Terry headed to the sahuagin dungeon again while hoping that he wouldn't be bothered. When he arrived, he saw a group returning, it was quite a large group, and it was too early for them to return...
Terry saw a blonde girl with short curly hair among those who returned. She had blue eyes, and she was really pretty with a curvy body. For a moment, Terry didn't recognize her, but then he recalled that she was the other who failed at awakening her trait. Considering how tired and sad she looked, it seemed that she had failed again.
"You are..." the blond girl said.
"My name is Terry. It seems that you tried to join this guild as well," Terry said.
Terry thought of pretending that he didn't see her, but she also recognized him. There was no need to ignore someone in that kind of situation and create some misunderstandings, so he decided to greet her.
"I am Rebecca... it looks like you came as well, and this time was recruited," Rebecca said after a long sigh.
"No, I am solo now," Terry explained. "This guild never called me for a test, so I am fighting solo."
"You are either brave, or the others didn't notice your trait... anyway, I am not going to take more of your time," Rebecca forced a smile and then began to walk away.
Terry looked at her walking away feeling totally dejected. He didn't have an obligation to help anyone. Still, after seeing her clothes made of monsters' leather that looked so old and beaten down, Terry felt like sighing. He didn't have an obligation to help anyone, but seeing someone so hard-working not be rewarded for her efforts made him a bit angry. A week ago, he probably looked exactly like her, at least in the expression. His clothes still were pretty haggard since he didn't have time to spend his money.
"I guess I should create my own guild... and I will need the help of some people for that," Terry thought.
In that society, people without powers were almost completely ignored. The current goal of the human race was to stop the invasions of monsters, and those that couldn't fight were useless for that, treated like dead weight. It wouldn't be so bad if he created a guild of people who were ignored for many years like him.
"Rebecca, do you want to help me?" Terry asked. "Until you awaken your trait, you can get ten percent of my earnings. After that, if you decide to keep working with me, then we can discuss a better cut."
"... I don't know how well you can fight, but I can't do much against sahuagins," Rebecca explained after a short while.
"It is fine. You won't be fighting," Terry said.
While Terry might do that, he will have to watch people for a while and see if they could be trustworthy. They would have to work for him for a while before that trust can be truly built.
In the end, Rebecca decided to accept the offer, she was dead broke, and she had two siblings to look after, so all money was welcome as long as she could keep her dignity.
They headed to the portal, and then Terry saw Guard B nodding at him, and he did the same. It looked like he was only going to bother Terry later... that was a problem for the future.
Once they crossed the portal, Rebecca raised her guard since she was only armed with some simple knives. Meanwhile, Terry looked around and saw the portal further away inland. Around six hundred meters away.
"These things appear in random places, but it is really suspicious," Terry said and then passed his knives to Rebecca. "Anyway, you should use these, they cut better."
After not so long, three sahuagins jumped out from the ocean... on the previous day. They only appeared in groups of two, but it seemed that they felt Rebecca's smell and came in a larger group.
Before they could even land, Terry charged at them and then swung his spear when they landed. The target tried to block the attack, but it was knocked down before rolling on the sand several times.
Long Spear - Lv 08 (22/90 EXP) (Common)
Attack Power: 18
Defense: 09
Durability: 18/18
With each level up, the power of the cheap spear was becoming more and more evident. When the second enemy tried to stab him, Terry just blocked the strike without even flinching. The other used water arrows, but Terry just pushed the enemy away and blocked three projectiles with a single swing. Before the monsters could try again, he impaled them in the chest in a quick succession.
The last one tried to use magic, but Terry smashed its head with the spear. Terry came without thinking, but it was clear that hunting those things was no longer efficient. Playing safe was fine and all, but Terry was in a hurry. He needed to get stronger before people could get in his way... he knew that a lot of people would try to crush him in order to keep the balance of power in the city since he was going to create a new guild...
