Chapter 370: Decision, Determination
Chapter 370: Decision, Determination
The soldier pointed toward a nearby watchtower and answered Yao Ran's question, "Captain Li is stationed there."
"Good. I'm going to find him. Stay here and focus on killing as many mutant giant birds as possible. Try to take them all out before the mutant desert beetles arrive," she instructed as she ran toward the watchtower.
"Yes, Sister-in-law," the soldier replied, watching her disappear into the watchtower.
When Yao Ran reached the small room at the top of the watchtower, she found Li Zhen sniping mutant giant birds with precision.
Before she could speak, Li Zhen turned to her and asked, "Miss Yao, what brings you here?" "I need your help," Yao Ran replied calmly.
Lowering his sniper rifle, Li Zhen asked, "What do you need?"
Yao Ran stepped closer and stood beside him near the small window. Pointing to the ground below, she asked, "Can you see the mutant desert beetles from here?"
Li Zhen glanced down and nodded. "Yes."
"How far are they from the barricades?" she asked again.
Li Zhen observed for a few seconds before replying, "They are about fifty meters away. At their current pace, they will reach the barricades in approximately one minute and ten seconds."
"Thank you," Yao Ran said before hurrying away.
Watching her run downstairs, Li Zhen paused for a moment, then returned to his task of eliminating the mutant giant birds.
Coming out of the watchtower, Yao Ran hurriedly told the others, "Prepare to ignite the barricades."
With her order, the two fire element ability users and Wu Yehao's subordinates took their positions.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Standing atop the wall, Yao Ran stared down, silently counting the time. When she counted to forty, she raised her hand and shouted, "Light it up now!"
Immediately, four fireballs shot toward the barricades below. As soon as the fireballs hit, the flames erupted fiercely.
Whoosh!
Wu Yehao's subordinate had built the barricades close together, so once one ignited, the fire quickly spread to the others. In no time, a blazing firewall stood between the incoming mutant desert beetles and the wall.
From the wall, Yao Ran watched as the beetles surged toward the flames. Narrowing her eyes, she studied their behavior carefully.
After a moment, she suddenly exclaimed, "Not good! The fire couldn't kill them! Everyone, prepare for battle!"
Just as she spoke, Long Yu returned with a group of soldiers. He glanced down at the situation and ordered, "Throw it down!"
Following his command, the soldiers quickly unpacked the bags they had carried, pulling out small glass bottles filled with liquid. One by one, they hurled the bottles over the wall to the mutant desert beetles down there.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
As the glass shattered on impact, a transparent liquid splashed onto the ground. Within moments, the flames roared higher and intensified.
Sniffing the air, Yao Ran's eyes flickered with realization. She turned to look at Long Yu and asked, "Is that ethanol?"
Long Yu nodded and replied, "Yes."
Looking back down, Yao Ran noticed that some of the mutant desert beetles were now succumbing to the flames. Her eyes brightened at this scene.
"We need stronger fire to kill them," she declared.
Hearing this, the fire element ability users launched more fireballs at the mutant desert beetles. Although their attacks managed to kill some, the sheer number of enemies made it clear they were still outmatched.
Observing the scene below, Long Yu said, "The wind is too strong. The fire will die down soon."
Yao Ran made a quick decision when he said that. She waved her hand, and five large wooden boxes appeared on the ground.
"Quick, come help me," she said.
The others approached and saw that the boxes were filled with C4 explosives. They were stunned at that sight, but Long Yu wasted no time. Grabbing several bombs, he used his wind element ability to fly and began dropping them.
As Yao Ran watched him work, she searched for Shi Xuan but couldn't find him. Turning to Wu Yehao, she asked, "Can you operate drones?"
Wu Yehao nodded. "Yes."
"Good."
Yao Ran then took out twenty drones from her space and said, "Help me load these bombs onto the drones."
Realizing what she wanted to do, Wu Yehao and his team hurriedly loaded the explosives onto the drones. Once loaded, each controlled the drone, dropping the C4 bomb on top of the mutant desert beetles before returning for another.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The explosion attracted more mutants to the area, but with this coordinated effort, the number of mutant desert beetles decreased rapidly.
At the same time, Li Zhen and his team finally killed the last of the mutant giant birds and joined Yao Ran's group to combat the mutant desert beetles.
While the situation at the west outer wall gradually came under control, the same couldn't be said for the other areas.
The combined assault of the mutant giant birds and mutant desert beetles had drastically increased casualties. By the time the survivors reached the underground shelter, less than sixty percent remained.
As the last bus entered the underground shelter, Xu Qipeng issued his command. "Sound the siren and close the gates!"
The soldiers saluted and said, "Yes, Commander!"
Accepting the order, a soldier quickly activated the siren, signaling the front-line fighters to retreat. Simultaneously, others began sealing the gates and preparing to assist those still
outside.
Wee- woo~ Wee~ woo~
In the next second, the sharp, urgent siren echoed throughout the base. Hearing it, the soldiers on the west outer wall exchanged tense glances.
Noticing their reactions, Yao Ran turned to Long Yu and asked, "A Yu, do you know what this
signal means?"
"It means we must retreat as soon as possible." He replied, frowning.
Listening to what Long Yu said, Yao Ran's expression changed. She frowned and said, "We
can't retreat. If the mutant desert beetles overrun the base, those in the underground shelter
won't be able to escape, and we will all be surrounded."
Long Yu nodded, "I know, but it's too dangerous to stay here."
