MY SUGAR MUMMY IS A BEAUTIFUL VAMPIRE

Chapter 357: Chimera

Randal frowned. "How can we do that without revealing our true purpose?"

"By making this personal," Dumphries replied. "Marlowe respects strength and values loyalty. We'll appeal to both."

The plan that emerged was daring in its simplicity. They would approach Marlowe openly, as themselves, with a request for aid in a personal matter. The story would be that an old friend of Dumphries – someone Marlowe had never met – was suffering from a rare blood disorder that was causing them to lose their vampiric abilities.

"We'll tell Marlowe that we've exhausted all other options," Dumphries explained. "That we're turning to him not just because of his power, but because of his wisdom. We need a small sample of blood from an elder vampire to complete a ritual that might save our friend."

Blake, the only one unknown to Marlowe, would play the role of a blood specialist they had enlisted to help with the ritual. His actual blood powers would lend credibility to this role.

Reggie voiced the concern they all felt. "But why would Marlowe care about helping some vampire he's never met?"

"He wouldn't," Dumphries acknowledged. "That's why we're not asking for the unknown vampire. We're asking for ourselves. We're putting our reputation, our standing on the line for this request. It's a gamble that Marlowe will respect."

Randal nodded slowly. "We're banking on his respect for you, and his curiosity about why we'd risk so much."

"Exactly," Dumphries confirmed. "We're not trying to trick him. We're challenging him to rise to an occasion, to be the leader we know him to be."

The plan was fraught with risk. They would be walking a tightrope, balancing truth and omission. They couldn't lie about their motivations – Marlowe would see through that instantly. Instead, they would present their desperate need without fully explaining its source.

Just as they were about to move, a cold wind swept across the hill, carrying with it the faint sound of howling. The group tensed, memories of their earlier encounter with the dire foxes still fresh in their minds.

Reggie's enhanced hearing picked up more than just howling. His face paled as he turned to the others. "We might have a problem," he said grimly. "That's not just foxes or wolves. There's something else out there... something bigger."

The news hit the group like a physical blow. They were so close to the city, to the next step of their quest, but now an unknown threat stood between them and their goal. The risk of failure, of never obtaining the elder's blood and saving Rose, suddenly seemed overwhelming.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the world into twilight, Blake and his companions faced a new, unexpected challenge. Their carefully laid plans were in jeopardy, and time was running out. The final leg of their quest had begun, but the path ahead was more treacherous than they could have imagined.

Blake clenched his fists, a mix of determination and fear coursing through him. They had come too far to fail now. Whatever obstacles lay ahead, whatever sacrifices were required, he would face them. For Rose. For Celena. For the family he had sworn to protect.

With a nod to his companions, Blake drew his sword, its blade glowing faintly in the gathering darkness. The others readied their weapons, their faces set with grim determination. As they prepared to face this new threat, the howling grew louder, closer

The forest fell silent as a massive shape burst from the underbrush. A chimera - part wolf, part lion, with a serpent for a tail - stood before them, its mismatched eyes gleaming with hunger and rage.

Blake reacted first, his eyes flashing crimson as he summoned a whirlwind of his own blood. The crimson tornado slammed into the chimera's flank, opening deep gashes. The beast roared in pain, its lion head snapping towards Blake. With frightening speed, it lunged, massive jaws clamping down on Blake's hand. He screamed as fangs pierced flesh and cracked bone.

Randal charged in, hands morphing into wicked claws. He raked them across the chimera's face, forcing it to release Blake. The wolf head whipped around, sinking its teeth into Randal's shoulder. He grunted in pain but didn't relent, using his vampiric strength to grapple with the massive beast.

The chimera's serpent tail lashed out, venom dripping from its fangs. Reggie barely managed to dodge, the fangs grazing his arm. Hissing in pain as the venom burned, he melded with the shadows, becoming a living darkness. He flowed around the beast, solidifying behind it to seize the serpent tail. With a sickening crack, he snapped it, rendering that deadly appendage useless.

The chimera howled in agony, its massive body thrashing. It threw Randal off, sending him crashing into a tree with bone-crushing force. Dazed, Randal struggled to his feet, blood oozing from numerous wounds.

Dumphries unsheathed his moon blade, the silver edge gleaming with an otherworldly light. As the chimera charged towards him, he stood his ground, the ancient weapon humming with power. At the last moment, Dumphries sidestepped and swung the moon blade in a graceful arc. The enchanted weapon sliced through the air, leaving a trail of spectral energy in its wake.

It connected with the chimera's flank, cutting deep.

The beast let out an ear-splitting shriek as the moon blade's magic seared through its flesh, leaving a wound that smoldered with silvery light. The chimera staggered, momentarily disoriented by the supernatural pain inflicted by the weapon. But its fury only intensified. It whirled on Dumphries, both heads snapping at him with renewed vigor.

Dumphries barely managed to bring his moon blade up in time, catching the lion head's jaws on the flat of the blade. The impact sent shockwaves up his arm, nearly wrenching the weapon from his grasp. He grunted with effort, holding the chimera at bay as its hot breath washed over him and saliva dripped onto the blade, sizzling against the enchanted metal.

This moment of deadlock gave Blake the opening he needed to launch his blood-spear attack, interrupting the chimera's assault on Dumphries...

Blake, his leg a mangled mess, formed a massive blood-spear. He hurled it with all his might, the crimson weapon impaling the chimera's hind leg. The beast stumbled, its charge interrupted mere feet from Dumphries.

Seizing the opportunity, Randal leapt onto the chimera's back. His jaw unhinged, revealing rows of needle-like fangs. He sank them into the creature's neck, tearing at flesh and arteries. The chimera bucked and thrashed, trying to dislodge him. Its lion head twisted around, clamping down on Randal's arm with crushing force. Bones splintered, but Randal held on, driven by bloodlust and desperation.

Reggie, still weakened by the venom, summoned the last of his strength. He became a living shadow once more, flowing into the chimera's wounds. From within, he began to solidify, his body expanding. The beast's eyes widened in shock and pain as Reggie tore it apart from the inside, ribs cracking and organs rupturing.

With a final, agonized roar, the chimera collapsed. Its massive form twitched violently before going still, a mangled ruin of what it once was.

The companions stood or lay where they had fallen, each bearing grievous wounds. The clearing had become a nightmarish tableau of blood and viscera. As the adrenaline faded, they exchanged glances, a mix of relief, pain, and horror at the brutality of the battle.

Slowly, painfully, they began to tend to their wounds, the taste of victory bitter in their mouths as they realized how close they had come to annihilation.

"Everyone alright?" Blake asked, his voice hoarse from the fight.

They nodded, looking at their wounds. Blake's shoulder was badly mauled, and Randal's arm bore an angry red welt from the serpent's venom. But before they knew it, their wounds began to heal on it's own, thanks to the blood they had drank earlier back at the cave.

With the immediate danger past, they resumed their journey, pushing through their exhaustion. As the moon climbed higher in the sky, they finally saw the gates of the vampire city looming before them.
