Chapter 41: Divided
Chapter 41: Divided
Phillip could almost cry reading this. There was only one problem. When he had first received this quest there had only been three legendary monsters. Also why did it not trigger when he had met it before. He began to ponder how he could claim the victory for himself.
The ground at the base of the wall exploded as the Ice Spear missed it's target who had avoided it. Gregory realised he was in a precarious situation and quickly sped up. Wanting to reach the top of the wall before more attacks came his way.
Kace was smiling though. This was because Gregory's information had been revealed to him.
Name: Gregory
Level: 6
Class: None
HP 350/350
AP 310/310
MP 50/50
Gregory was just a strong normal human. As such unlike Victor the mage, he had not managed to gain a class. That did not mean he would be easy to defeat though. The system still registered that he was a level behind in terms of power but it would not be impossible.
As Gregory reached the top of the walls Kace was just standing waiting for him. With a calm composure that threw Gregory off. He could feel the difference that occurred to Kace since they last clash. Leaving him baffled as to what methods he had used.
Kace stared down his opponent as he had full confidence in Grugda to command the defence. Taking hold of his halberd with both hands he activated [Cursed Weapon].
Since he knew Gregory's fighting style then this skill would be perfect against him. With that he rushed in. As the halberd swung towards his belly seeking to disembowel him Gregory unconsciously reacted. Using his fist to punch the flat of the blade to change its trajectory.
Although this was successful and he had not been injured he suddenly felt himself get weaker. He immediately jumped backwards to gain some distance. As he noticed that this had happened when he came into contact with the weapon.
Kace was hot on his trail though. He knew Gregory would realise how dangerous it would be to come into contact with his halberd so he could not give him time to think. That was likely to be the only free curse stack he was going to get.
He pressed on this time driving the spear tip of the halberd towards Gregory. Who quickly side dodged it but was not expecting for Kace to so quickly turn the stab into a slash as it followed him.
This time Gregory was forced to to touch it again. If he did not then he was going to get hit anyway. Using an open palm uppercut he struck the underside of it to knock it into the air.
This surprised Kace as he was now left open to attack. Although Gregory did receive another curse stack. He rushed in to the opening he had created. His opponents movements and skill with the halberd were crude and untrained.
Striking out at the exposed side of Kace he rapidly let loose a combo of fist strikes. The armour and his increased stats helped to keep the damage low though. Losing a mere 20 HP.
Letting go of his weapon with one hand he drove his elbow down towards Gregory's face. Forcing him to retreat. With his other hand he swung the halberd once more.
Gregory continued to retreat until he was just out of reach however Kace smiled at this. Before it would pass him he let the shaft slide through his hand until he only held onto the very last section. Increasing its range by quite a bit.
Gregory was too late to knock this one aside so instead he lifted his arms and trusted his armour to take the blow. The blow bit deep into his armguards and pierced the skin behind them. Causing a third curse stack. Once again Gregory felt weakened. However straight after it he regained a bit of strength which confused him.
He did not realise that the time on the first stack had run out. Kace removed the blade and swung the pommel at Gregory's head. Forcing him to block it which reintroduced a third stack. This time the effects did not immediately disappear.
At first Gregory thought that maybe it had hit a limit but now he knew that the loss of strength was only temporary. 'Around 20 seconds after each blow I guess.' Gregory thought.
Now twenty seconds did not sound like a lot but in a life and death battle it could make all the difference. Kace however was treating this like training. Wanting to increase his skill in close quarter combat. Hence he had refrained from using any other magic.
Gregory retaliated by launching a kick at him, striking him in the leg. The kick was full of power and swept his feet from the ground. Then with another strike Gregory launched him from the walls. His HP had now fallen to 285.
Meanwhile on the allied forces side...
Lucas waited until the other commanders responded to his summoning. Urien was the last to arrive amongst them.
"What are you waiting for! My men are dieing out there!" he roared in anger.
"It was your own mistake for letting your emotions get the better of you!" Lucas snapped back.
Although Lucas wanted to continue to use the mercenaries to waste the ammunition of the siege weapons he felt he could no longer afford to. Although the halberd bearing monster seemed to have the upper hand for now its movements were too rough.
Meaning it was still a low level. So there was a chance that Uriens man Gregory could claim the victory. Lucas was not willing to see that happen. He knew that all of his men would have received the same quest as he did so everyone on the field had just become a competitor rather than an ally.
"Sarah, take your troops and attack the western walls. Phillip, you'll assault the east. I'll provide reinforcements for Uriens men." Lucas commanded.
This immediately provoked Phillips ire. Killing that monster was more important to him than anyone else out here. Sarah still did not seem to care as she waltzed off to complete the orders given to her.
After an intense staring match with Lucas, Phillip did the same. Cursing under his breath as he went. 'I can only hope it escapes him and comes running to me.' he thought.
"My gratitude Hero Lucas for saving my men." Urien said solemnly, swallowing his pride. Completely unaware of the rift developing amongst his allies.
"No need to thank me." Lucas replied seriously. Especially since his goal was the monster and he just needed an excuse to get rid of as many competitors as possible.
At this moment he noticed his target get thrown from the walls. His heart became anxious at the thought that he may have acted too late.
"All troops! Forward!" he roared. Hoping that he could at least get close enough to strike the falling monster before it became meat paste when it struck the ground.
Back on the walls...
Kace felt himself free falling. Gregory's triumphant face appeared above him. Kace was calm though. Clearly his opponent had forgotten about one of his crucial skills. [Spider Thread]! The thread attached itself close the pinnacle of the walls.
He made sure to fire it off at an angle so that the momentum would allow him to swing himself across the face of the walls and back to the top. Gregory's face froze as he realised his mistake. This opponent was no longer the weak monster that he had given a beaten to before.
As Kace felt the thread grow taught he prepared himself. Holding onto it with one hand and his halberd in the other he swung his legs. With the wind rushing in his face he could clearly see the allied forces making their move. 'Now why would they split up?' he wondered. Thinking that it made no sense.
The weakest part of any defensive structure was definitely the gates. It would take some time for them to break through the walls as he was certain that not everyone would be able to scale the walls. Trepidation filled his heart as he thought that maybe they had overlooked something. Completely unaware that he himself was essentially to blame for his opponents moment of madness.
As he swung through the air he turned his attention back to his opponent who would be waiting on him. Trusting the others to come up with a counter measure.
As he reached the apex of his swing he released the thread. Launching himself into the air above the walls. Gregory was now waiting down below. With a burst of red light Gregory launched himself towards Kace. Using up 10 MP.
This caught Kace off guard. Since he was mid air at the moment he no good ways to defend himself. 'I wonder if...' he thought as an idea popped into his mind. It should be possible. Right? Gregory felt a chill as he could see the smile that was now filling Kace's golden eyes.
