Chapter 1428: Sweet Lie
Xiang Wai walked aimlessly into the night, not knowing where to go. Her mind was screaming but she looked rather calm on the surface. But the storm within her couldn't be held back at all. Before she could decide, she found herself at her mother's door. She looked at the closed door with a thoughtful look and finally lifted her hand to ring the bell.
She was taking her chances. Song Xin'ai spent only a few days in a month at her house and the rest were spent in the research center. Xiang Wai didn't know what she was hoping for right now. Did she want to see her mother right now or she was hoping that her mother wouldn't be at home?
However, before she could figure out anything, the door in front of her opened.
"Wai?" Song Xin'ai frowned in confusion. She looked at the time and then looked back at her daughter, not understanding the current situation in front of her eyes. "What are you doing here?"
Xiang Wai broke out of her thoughts and asked in return, "Can't I come to see my mother? Do I need to make an appointment?"
Although her response was very much in line with her personality, how could Song Xin'ai not understand that there was something different about her daughter? She wondered what happened to prompt Xiang Wai into coming to her at this time of the night.
"Come inside first," said Song Xin'ai as she held Xiang Wai's wrist and pulled her inside. She took out a new pair of slippers for her and then entered the living room. Heading toward the kitchen, she instructed, "Sit here first."
Xiang Wai looked around at her mother's place which was just as meticulously cleaned as always. There was barely anything to see in this place actually. There was nothing fun around Song Xin'ai. The most excessive things in this house would be books and research papers. Lots and lots of research papers.
The coffee table had lots of research papers scattered around and even the dining table had them. It made one wonder if it was a place to eat or to read papers. There wasn't a TV in this house. Only basic furniture was available and nothing was kept just for the sake of appearance. In a way, this was a very depressing place. Maybe that's why she never liked coming to her mother's place.
A long-buried thought came to Xiang Wai, her mother's life was way too boring.
Before Xiang Wai could think further, Song Xin'ai came out of the kitchen with a glass of juice and a bowl of instant noodles. She put the juice in front of Xiang Wai while she sat down to eat the noodles.
Xiang Wai didn't take the juice, her eyes were on the bowl of instant noodles that stung her eyes a little. She looked up at her mother and asked, "This is your dinner or late-night snack?"
Song Xin'ai paused and looked into her eyes, "Maybe both."
"It's almost midnight," reminded Xiang Wai. "Let's not talk about how it's way too late for dinner but instant noodles? Really? Can't you eat anything else? Can you digest this so late at night?"
Song Xin'ai offered her a small smile, "I'll have to consume a lot of mental power, I'm sure it'll be digested easily."
"Mom!"
"Woah! You scared me! What are you shouting for?"
Xiang Wai looked at her with a helpless and speechless look in her eyes. "What are you doing with your life? What exactly is your goal?"
"Huh?" Song Xin'ai was dumbfounded by these questions that came out of nowhere and made no sense to her for a while either. She didn't understand Xiang Wai's purpose. "What do you mean by what am I doing with my life?"
"You skip your meals, don't get enough sleep, don't have time for yourself, don't like going out, and you practically have no life. What's the point of all your achievements? What is this research gonna do for you? You have so much money but what's the point of it when in the middle of the night, you're only gonna eat instant noodles? The ancients said a man does struggle for food just like birds do. What about you? What are you struggling for when you're surviving on air?"
Song Xin'ai was momentarily unable to react and when she did, she avoided Xiang Wai's eyes and continued to eat her noodles. "My life is not as bad as you say, Wai. It's pretty good. I'm satisfied with my life."
"Are you now?"
Song Xin'ai nodded her head, "You see, even Raelle is willing to talk to me occasionally now. What else can I not be satisfied with?"
"Then I must say that my mother is very easily satisfied. Are your expectations of life so low? Or you don't have any expectations to begin with?"
Song Xin'ai noticed the sheen of moisture in Xiang Wai's eyes and was startled. "Baby, what made you so excited? What got on your nerves? Did someone bully you? Do you want mom to stand up for you?"
"I'm past the age where I need you to support me," huffed Xiang Wai. "You! You can't even stand up for yourself. If you did, you wouldn't be living such a life right now."
"Are you so disappointed in mom?" asked Song Xin'ai. "But then again, I haven't been a good mother to you so it's not surprising really. However, you can at least tell me if something is bothering you. Even if I can't help, I'd like to know what's been going on in your life."
Xiang Wai held her hand and looked into her eyes saying, "Why don't you first look at your own life? Or have you been living in deception for so long that you can't see the reality anymore? Or maybe you wanted to always live in this sweet lie?"
Song Xin'ai blinked her eyes as she stared into Xiang Wai's. She noticed the red veins popping up and it gave her a bad feeling.
