Chapter 37: Sacking of Sparta, 1194 BCE

[3rd POV]

It was a bright and warm day, spring has come to the lands of Sparta, and people are starting to plant their crops. It was a normal day for the common folk, but for the Spartan nobility, it was a busy day, because the delegation of Troy was expected to arrive today.

Soon enough, it is true, the guards saw a rather large delegation, bringing countless carriages travelling to Sparta. And so the nobles welcomed them.

“Where’s Pluto and Thena?” questioned Helen, who was standing beside her husband.

“They are with Hermione again… out of the city.” said Menelaus solemnly, annoyed at thought. “I do not know why you still trust them Helen, to me, they are just dead weight.”

Helen eyed Menelaus. “So that is your true thoughts… I find it weird that you do not have any contempt whatsoever towards them, turns out, you do have some.”

“They are Athenians Helen, they were the one who kidnapped you in the first place, how can you trust them?” said Menelaus, Helen could feel a trace of anger in his voice.

“They are different.”

“Different how?”

“Have you seen their powers?”

Menelaus laughed. “You and father kept talking about their powers, but I never saw it. The two always refused when I asked to see their powers.”

“You’ve seen my cat, it’s Pluto’s power.”

“That strange thing?” Menelaus scoffed. “I could probably find those types of cats in the depths of the forest.”

“We both know you can’t find that cat inside the forest husband, that ‘cat’ is not alive. It never eats, it never drinks, it only watches.” said Helen solemnly.

“By the gods Helen, stop with your delusions.” said Menelaus in annoyance.

“Stop denying my words.” refuted Helen.

“Enough,” said Menelaus coldly. “After we deal with the delegations of Troy, I will exile those two, they are exploiting the Spartan nobility long enough.”

“I do not agree with such a decision.” said Helen as she clenched her fist tightly.

“I am the king woman, not you.” said Menelaus sternly.

“I am the late king’s daughter.” refuted Helen again.

“Well, he’s already dead.” sneered Menelaus, which made Helen grit her teeth. “Enough of this talk, they are coming.”

The king and Helen looked in front of them, where the delegations were near. Not a moment later, Prince Paris of Troy was standing in front of King Menelaus of Sparta, behind him were his guards and gifts.

“King Menelaus of Sparta.” bowed Paris, his attitude was calm and polite, but Helen felt that something was off with this prince.

“Paris.” said Menelaus while smiling, he patted Paris’s shoulder and hugged him, greeting the young man. He stepped back a bit, and he presented his wife to Paris. “Paris, this is my beautiful wife, Helen.”

Paris paused a bit when he saw Helen, he scanned her from top to bottom, as if she was a… price… Helen hated it, but she could only be silent, as Menelaus didn’t notice Paris’s gaze.

“Come Paris, we have prepared a feast for you and your entourage.” said Menelaus with a smile.

And so, the delegation entered Sparta, towards the palace, not knowing the disaster it would bring.

[Paris’s POV]

My father tasked me to be the leader of the delegation to Sparta. I… disliked them… they are a rowdy bunch, when they visited us, our whores complained about their roughness and overall disrespectful towards them, our servants said so as well, but they said that it is normal for a delegation to be like that.

I didn’t like it, but I had to go.

When we neared the city, it was a so-so sight. It wasn’t Troy and our magnificent walls and architecture, but it was a city befitting a Hellenic kingdom, let’s put it like that…

We then stopped at the gate of the city, and I greeted the king politely, as I should, but as soon as I saw the king’s wife, I stopped.

She is a goddess on earth, she is so beautiful!

How can a Spartan King have this goddess as a wife? She looked at me, and she smiled, by the gods, her smile is so beautiful… Does she find me attractive? I hope that is the case…

Perhaps… this journey is not a waste of time after all…

[Helen’s POV]

We are now in our dining hall, we were feasting, welcoming the delegation of Troy. The Trojans were not as loud as we Spartans usually eat, one of the delegation representatives was speaking to my husband, speaking about trade deals, but I saw Prince Paris staring at me rather intently, he was eating while eyeing me.

It sent shivers down my spine, oh gods, why did Pluto and Thena took a hunting leave with Hermions while the Trojan delegations are hear… their timing is really bad…

Paris continued to watch it as I ate, I elbowed my husband, but he didn't seem to care… this is… quite uncomfortable… I didn’t know what to do, so I smiled at the prince, and the prince smiled back…

I think I just made the wrong decision…

[Paris’s POV]

We are eating right now, and I just can’t keep my eyes off this goddess in front of me… I told my servant to distract the king, so I could enjoy the sight without distraction…

I also saw her keep eyeing me… perhaps she’s attracted to me as well… I kept eating while I enjoyed the sight, I just can’t keep my eyes off her.

Then, I saw her smile at me. Gods, is this a dream? She smiled at me? I smiled back, and she looked away, clearly embarrassed. I might have a chance after all.

[Helen’s POV]

It is now night, we are gathering in the gardens of the palace, gazing at the stars above us. The prince is trying to get close to me, rather forcefully, while my husband is talking to the other guests, seemingly didn’t know what’s going on.

The Prince is flirting with me, a queen! I tried to subtly say that I refuse his approach, but he didn’t seem to budge… I have the urge to just slap this prince, but I feared that it would damage the already strained relationship between Sparta and Troy.

So I endured… I really wish that Thena was here, she could beat some sense to this prince…

[Paris’s POV]

The stars were showing themselves as I sat closer to the goddess. I spoke to her sincerely. I complimented her, saying that she is the most beautiful woman that I encountered, and no other woman is compared to her.

Again, she smiled at me, gods, that smile… I also notice that she is playing hard to get, all the more fun to make her fall in love with me…

While I was trying to seduce the goddess, the king suddenly had an urgent message from his faraway family: his grandfather, the king of Crete, is dead. Menelaus frowned, and he hesitantly dismissed himself, so that he could attend his grandfather’s funeral.

This is my chance.

The king had given the authority to the queen, replacing him. And so, the king went to the port, and caught a boat towards Crete.

As soon as the king was gone, I confronted my goddess.

“Goddess, you must be tortured living in this barbarians hometown… let me bring you to our civilized city.” I whispered to the goddess, smiling.

The goddess frowned. “What is the meaning of this, prince Paris?”

I was confused. “You are attracted to me? Are you not?”

“What? No! You are a creepy man, prince!”

I froze on the spot.

Creepy? Wasn’t she smiling at me? Did I not act nice in front of her? What did I do wrong?

Then I realised. She was playing with me.

This bitch!

“Are you sure you won’t leave this horrible place, my goddess?” I questioned coldly.

“What is wrong with you! I am the queen of this place! Are you mocking me?!”

So she played me. I was so nice to her…

“Very well my goddess. I will save you, you are brainwashed by these brutes.” I said. I turned to my men. “Men! Kill everyone in the palace! Loot their treasury! We’re going home!”

“What! Do you dare to face the consequences!” the goddess shouted, fear on her face.

I just punched her, knocking her cold. I carried her like a sandbag, and left the place as the palace burned to the ground and my men looted the palace, killing all the guards that tried to defend.

What a joke. They were caught off guard, and they were killed instantly.
