Chapter 4

Awoooo!

The howling of a wolf woke me up. It was well into the night already and hearing a wolf howling like that, I wasn't very keen to accompany it for the meal.

Awooo!

'Shut up you stupid wolf!' I thought to myself while laying in my shelter. I didn't dare to move an inch. Then I heard more noises and the worst part? It seemed that those noises were getting closer to where I was.

I just layed there and waited…. I then hear sounds of what I could only think of as battle. I thought to myself 'Maybe it's the hunters from before. They might be hunting the wolf right now.' I really hoped that this was a case.

Unfortunately the sounds were coming closer and closer and I could hear the wolf but what it was fighting was probably not a human. If I remember correctly there were five hunters and I only heard one other noise besides the wolf's.

The night sky was illuminated by the moon and finally two silhouettes emerged and fought in the open area near the stream. What I saw was a wolf and… a wolf? One of the wolves was much bigger than the other but also looked more terrifying. It had silver coloured fur that glistered in the moonlight. On the other hand the other wolf was half the size of the silver one but its fur was black.

I never heard of a wolf with black fur, maybe it was dirty but then when I looked more closely I noticed its fur also shined like a well polished sword. I decided to watch the battle, maybe they will leave to different area or maybe one of them will die and the other one will leave. Besides I wouldn't be stupid enough to just reveal my location just like that.

Silver wolf: "Grrrrr"

Black wolf: "...."

The more I watched the battle the more puzzled I became. It was like the silver wolf gave different types of howls while the black one stayed quiet all the time. They pounced at each other and I noticed that although the silver wolf was stronger and bigger, the black one was a lot more agile and fast.

The fight lasted more than ten minutes already and both wolves were tired and wounded. Then the silver wolf launched the attack again, pouncing even more ferociously with its superior strength and stamina and finally managed to kill the black wolf. Yea, I thought the black wolf is going to win here as it was quite well matched but alas, the silver wolf was probably much too strong for it… or maybe to experienced.

I thought it will now consume that wolf and leave… yea right. It didn't even touch the dead black wolf, no. It looked straight in my direction as if aware I was there looking at the whole fight from the beginning.

'That motherfu****!' I cursed in my mind. These wolves probably knew about my existence from the beginning! Who was I going to fool? of course wolves have superior sense of smell!

Without any type of warnings the silver wolf pounced towards me. This scared me shitless and the only thing I could think of was my large wooden spear. In haste I retrieved the spear and placed it in front of me. Just in time to see the silver wolf's gaping mouth full of bloodied teeth.

THUD!

I woke up in the morning, I could feel some weight on my whole body. When I focused my sight I noticed wolf's large head on my chest… "HOLY SHIT!" I screamed at the top of my lungs and crawled out from under the wolf.

Many things went through my mind which I will not share with you but after the initial shock I noticed the wooden spear pierced through the wolf's head. Then it hit me what had happened last night.

I placed the wooden spear in front of me and because the silver wolf's speed was too great and it was already very near me, it didn't have time to change directions nor close its mouth and therefore killed itself. When I imagined this situation, I couldn't thank the gods enough for how lucky was I to carry that stick with me!

After calming down a bit I decided to take some of the leather from the wolf so I could make a pouch or a bag to store some stuff inside. Although I didn't have any tailoring tools, I had a knife and using some vines as a thread, it should be sufficient at least for now.

Unfortunately creating a leak proof container was impossible but something to hold my berries and a stone would be nice instead of my pockets! I also took some of the meat for breakfast and cooked some for my dinner. I had nowhere to store fresh or cooked meat so taking large quantities would be useless. Besides why attract wild animals more than I already did.

After breakfast I packed my stuff and continued on with my journey.
