Chapter 383: The rebels
When Vanessa opened her eyes again, it was already morning next day, the sky was clear and there was no sign of screams or howling monsters anywhere near her.
"You're awake." Leon's loud voice came to her ears, sounding very excited, causing her to flinch in displeasure. Before turning her head to see him sitting by her bedside. "How are you feeling? You were a little injured, so does it still hurt?"
Ignoring Leon's questions, Vanessa took a look around as she grunted in pain and tried to sit up. "Here, let me help." Leon came forward to help her, but Vanessa just raised her hand to stop him.
"Where are we?" She asked a little warily. Noticing the unfamiliar background through the open windows, which just screamed plain and peaceful, a scenery that obviously couldn't be possible in the monster city of Sol.
"Ohh that we're outside the city, in the deep forests. It's actually a camp of survivors and rebels who want to fight against those monsters, so you don't have to worry about those demon guards coming here." Leon answered and then comforted thinking maybe she was feeling scared after her near death experience.
"I'm not worried, and if I had mana, I would've just… anyway, thanks for saving me." Hearing his caring tone, Vanessa felt unsettled for a moment as it was so against something she had seen these past 2 years, so she tried to show her brave front, only to fail midway, and then say what she actually wanted to say.
"Oh that's nothing, I'm sure you would've handled yourself." Leon said after noticing her mood, before changing the topic, "I mean I saw the signs on the ground, that flame magic, you literally rained fire back there."
"It was just a spell for multiple fireballs." Vanessa responded, a little less awkward but still feeling weird and a little happy hearing praise from him.
"Yeah but still it was amazing. Even I can't do anything like that. Plus seeing those fires is how we found you."
"We?" Vanessa asked in doubt. As she didn't see anyone else at that place before she passed out.
"Ohh you don't know her yet, wait, I'll just call her." Leon said excitedly and walked out. Only to come back in a few seconds later with a young girl following him. "Let me introduce you two, Kami, she's Vanessa, my classmate and a friend . . And Vanessa, she's Kami, leader of the rebels here. But everyone else here calls her the guide."
"Kami?" Vanessa said and stared at the half monster girl who bore an odd resemblance to the demon who's been hunting her these last two three days.
"Hello. Leon here saved my life some time ago, so any friend of his my guest. You can rest here with peace of mind, I assure you no soldier would ever find this place? And if you need anything, just _"
"What's your relationship with that him?"
Kami was talking about her hospitality, when Vanessa suddenly stood up and drew her spear at her neck, interrupting her chat with a question.
"Vanessa?" Leon, who took two seconds to ease his shock, shouted and rushed forward to stand between both girls.
His face showing expression of confusion, yet a tiny part deep down in his heart wondering if Vanessa got angry seeing him & Kami together. Feeling so jealous that she directly asked about their relationship.
However this funny fantasy of Leon was broken by Vanessa's sharp response.
"Get out of here Leon. She's probably fooling you. Rebel leader, the guide, humph, it's probably a joke between her and that bastard in the castle."
"Wait, what, I don't understand. Is there some misunderstanding? I know Kami, she's not a bad person..."
"Ohh come on Leon, you met her what, two days ago, maybe three. She's probably been fooling everyone in this city for months, years maybe. It's not that difficult to lie." Vanessa said, and remembering the sight of that prison cell, she slashed her sword, aiming to end this monster duo's power play.
But at the end time, while Kami just raised her arms to cover her head in fear, Leon jumped in again to block the sword. Stopping it with his arms. "Vanessa, will you explain what happened? Kami's been with me all the time these few days, I'm sure you must have some misunderstanding. Whoever you think she is, she's not. Please explain to me, if you're right,I'll _ I'll stop.
Okay. Just…"
"You _fine" Vanessa put her sword into her storage ring, seeing Leon's hand bleeding as he held it tightly. "I was in the city, the castle where the monster leader, called Kurami, tortured 8 of our friends and killed them."
"What???"
"Yeah, I tried to rescue them, but I was too late. I just know that through them, he learned everything about our expedition. So to stop him from hunting our other classmates, I killed him, or at least tried to. But he somehow survived, and has been hunting me since then. Those monster guards that came after me, they were his minions."
"I_ I'm sorry but _ what does it have to do with Kami?" Leon asked again, suppressing his emotions over his classmates' death.
"See for yourself." Vanessa said, pulling the memoir ring and showing Leon the photo of Kurami. "I heard someone say that Kurami has a daughter who's missing, and no one has seen her for quite a while now."
"Humph a reign where the rulers and rebels are working for the same party, will obviously last longer." Vanessa sneered at Kami, who just seemed shocked over this reveal.
"Is that true, Kami?" Leon asked as he turned back to look at his new friend with aprenhension , but was treated like air as Kami pushed him aside and came near Vanessa and grabbed her shoulders.
"You met my father?" she asked, her voice a little shaky..
"So, he is your father.."
"No, answer me first, did you kill him?"
"Didn't you hear, he's alive."
"No, that's now what I mean, did YOU kill him?" Kami asked again, making Vanessa feel that something was wrong.
"I did, I think. I burned him to a crisp, thrusting a flaming spear right through his heart, but somehow he's still alive."
"Fuck."
That's the only thing Kami could say as she slumped on the floor with a feared look, making Leon and Vanessa doubt what happened.
"Kami, you okay?" Leon said worriedly as he tried to help her, before turning towards Vanessa and complaining, "Vanessa, we'll talk about this later, but I know, Kami's not like her father. I'm sure you're wrong, we're all really safe here."
"No, we're not." Kami cut off Leon with a depressed remark, as a tear slipped through her eyes, "No one's safe."
"What?" Leon asked before feeling a tremor in the ground, forcing him to almost stumble and fall.
Soon sounds of screams and explosions came from the outside, like a war had erupted all of a sudden.
Vanessa and Leon both looked at Kami who sighed heavily and closed her eyes, like giving up. Before looking out the window to see tiny dots covering the sky, coming closer and closer, until it became clear what they were. An army of monsters flying in the air, coming straight for their camp.
"He's here." Kami said, as a monster's sharp roar signaled the start for a massacre.
Vanessa ran out the door and looked up at the sky, only to see a snake-like monster with rotten wings on it's back flying through the clouds, spreading poison in the air with its every breath.
And on top of this posisonous atrocity stood a humane monster over 8 feet tall.
"Kurami," Vanessa muttered as her eyes met with his smirk, before getting pulled back inside by Leon, as the place she was standing suddenly got porcupined, when the stone ground turned to dozens of sharp swords that suddenly shot up.
A few people also rushed into their room, guards for Kami and the few students Leon found along the way.
. The war of Sol starts… .. Two hundred rebels and eight outlanders vs nearly a thousand monster army led by the unkillable Kurami himself.
The eight students here were Leon, Vanessa, Seraphina, Heath, Zirrix, Cecile, and 2 no name needed NPC's lol.
