Chapter 44 - A fun class filled with smiles

After finishing lunch, two practical classes continued in the afternoon. The first one is “Magic Shooting (Precision Class)”. The purpose of this class is to train through practical skills in order to hit a distant target with a strong and accurate magic attack. We came to an open wasteland in the school.
”Err, I mean, missing your aim is out of the question, but even if you can’t destroy the target, you’re not qualified to participate in this class.”
The portly old man politely explained. “Is it customary to scare the students in the first class? The students in this class are mostly upperclassmen, but they all have strong faces. They don’t have a grin on their faces.”
“However, it was tight. If I missed the target, I would fail the class. What a lukewarm class. I had made a mistake in the morning lecture in order to leave school early. So, I have to show my weakness in the practice test. But, this time it’s a piece of cake.”
“I see that you have two new students who are skipping the lower classes to take this class.”
“Hello again.” The old man stared at me and Rius. “By the way, Iris isn’t here. I’m sure you’re not the only one. It’s not surprising. It’s a great victory to expose my haplessness early on and get a snide laugh from grandfather-sensei, who said”
“It seems that this class was too early for you, Zenphis. If someone said to me, ‘someone who wants to do it,’ I’d be the first to raise my hand, right?”
“So, why don’t we give Rius Ortea-san a try first?”
Whoosh!
Rius stepped forward with both fists clenched together. It’s a bit of a shame for me, as I’d like to see him declare his flunking out as soon as possible, but here goes.
At least two hundred meters away from Rius, there is a wooden stick standing about two meters long. At the tip of the stick was a crystal-like sphere. That’s the target.
There were a number of targets placed at intervals of 10 meters. The other side is heaped up high with earth, which protects you from magic even if you miss.
The targets are covered with a modest amount of protective magic. You can’t say you’ve passed the test if you don’t destroy it even if it hits the target, so that’s what I intend to do.
Rius smiled wryly at the overlapping threats. He chanted and lifted one hand upwards. As he forms his palm as if he were holding something, a long, thin light appeared in it.
“Let’s go, Light Arrow, Lightning Arrow!”
He waved his arms like a javelin thrower and shot a light arrow. The arrows, which went through the air at a tremendous speed, hit the target with a clear, rasping sound. The spherical target made a small hole and then shattered into pieces.
“Hmm. It’s quite powerful. The aim is also accurate. I’m surprised that you are so skilled at using light magic to this extent.” Sensei nodded with a satisfied look on his face and a shriveled expression. People around him are groaning.
Rius puff out his chest as if it was natural.
“Hmm, good job, Rius. Good job. The more perfect the previous guy is, the more I’m a hack.”
“Now, let’s see what you’re capable of.”
“I understand.”
A true strike appeared. I made a tense face and faced the distant target squarely with my eyes swimming anxiously. The heckling act has already begun. Now, I’m supposed to only have the [Earth] attribute.
So, I crouched down and put my hand on the earth. It’s a magic that turns those pebbles there into stone crushers. In reality, it’s covered with a ward to make it fly, but in appearance, it’s a pretense of exercising the lowest level of magic in the earth system.
I whispered something spell-like about poo. Everyone looks at me with a questioning expression. I’m going to shoot my magic without regard to it. Honestly, I don’t know how much.
From what I’ve seen of Rius’s magic, the target doesn’t seem to be much of a defense. If you hit it poorly, you might destroy it. It’s a good idea to be able to have a good idea of what you’re looking for.
You know that.
“Huh? Did I do something else?”
You must not use the flow of “I’m not going to be able to do this”.
In this case, you must miss the target cleverly and use enough power to dive into the fill. Carefully, pretend to aim at the target.
“Stone attack!”
I sent the pebbles flying. It flew with a whizzing speed there. A little too powerful, don’t you think? As expected, they might think that I shot weak magic on purpose. I increased the speed of the pebbles slightly. It’s difficult to adjust the speed since I don’t usually do it.
I’m not sure if this is a good idea or not, but that’s when I thought to myself.
“Quack.”
A bird flew by. A strange bird, about the size of a crow. It was swiftly flying low and heading into my magical line of fire.
‘Not good.’
Even if I slowed down now, I couldn’t avoid a head-on collision, I have a feeling. I’ll have a hard time waking up if I hit it and scatter my little life.
Snap.
So, I stopped. The pebble stopped in mid-air and the bird passed lazily in front of it.
Good grief, he’s so carefree.
I cowered my shoulders and moved the pebble again. It’s almost the same speed as before.
Hm? You got distracted by a bird and your aim was way off. How close to the next target is too close to miss, right?
I twisted my course and the pebble passed a few inches away from the target and was buried in the fill.
Perfect!
I was also able to create a sense of being somewhat left and right, which is good, right?
Oh no, I missed.
I should be frustrated and fuming, but I was a little happy, so I turned around with a smile on my face, and that’s when I saw it.
I turned around, and that’s when I heard the ‘snap’.
There was a small, tiny sound behind me. It seems that something like an ultra-fine needle hit the defensive wards that I always deploy and shattered them. The defensive wards only react to attack-like magic from outside my awareness.
Who or what is the purpose of this?
I don’t know if he was aiming at me or one of the students that lined up in front of me. I expanded my search, but I didn’t see anything that looked like a teacher. That needle-like something shattered, so any information leading to that guy was also lost.
Oh, is it not possible that it was a stray bullet from another class? We don’t know anyway, so it’s no use, but more importantly.
‘What’s going on, folks?’
“Shhhh.”
Rius, the teacher, and everyone in the class with me are all wide-eyed and mouths agape.
If you noticed the mysterious attack? However, they won’t think that I prevented it, will they? If that becomes the case, then what? Did I just do that? Grandfather-sensei moved his head like a creaky, rusty robot and turned his head to face me.
“Did you just…remotely control…?”
“Yes?”
“I knew it!”
No, there was a question mark. It stopped and gurgled! Apparently, he hadn’t noticed the mysterious attack, and it was a question about moving the magic that I’d unleashed.
But, why?
That’s just a normal thing to do. Frey, Liza, and my dad can do it. Nobody said a word when they saw me do it.
”You, a freshman, can do the equivalent of a level 30+ rank B difficulty… No, you’re a magic level 2 in the first place, right? How on earth did you do that?”
“More importantly, you missed the point. It’s not very powerful either, is it?”
“You can’t make it through training, sir! And even if your magic level is low, you can still cover it up to a certain extent with special armor and such.”
But wait! “I’m sorry,” grandfather-sensei called out as his veins snapped.
”Remote control requires not only a magical level, but also a great deal of sense. A realm that even that Princess Flash Princess Giselotte Queen couldn’t reach when she was a student. That! You!”
‘What, that woman wasn’t so great when she was young. That’s not the point.’
“Great! Zenphis-san, I’m going to make some special adjustments to your training menu. We’ll need to work on improving the accuracy of the remote-control system. Oh, I’ll share the information with the other professors of the practical classes.”
The teacher excitedly swooped in.
“And then you’re going to throw a wrench in the existing research on the link between magical levels and remote control, as well. I think my specialty is–“
No.
I’m in my own world.
“You are so fucking awesome.”
Rius came up to me and put a familiar hand on my shoulder.
“But, hey, it’s not really like that, is it? Are you out of shape or nervous, or maybe you just didn’t want to reveal your hand?”
In a way, the last one is the right answer.
“Ha ha ha,”
I can only laugh dryly for now.
“Ha-ha-ha-ha,” said Grandpa-sensei laughing as well.
Even Rius and the students burst out laughing,
“Hahahahahaha!”
The class is full of smiles and fun. Though, I want to cry–.
