Chapter 458 Learn Today, Be Better Tomorrow
There were only four students left to test for the final exam, but the audience didn't care about them. Compared to William and the proctor's mini battle, the remaining four were just ants in the grass— you could step on them and no one would notice.
The four students quickly cycled through, but the proctor wasn't able to find anything wrong with them even after a long time. He wasn't naive to think that he had cleared out all the suspicious individuals, but it was good enough.
The rest was on the Principal, Vice Principal, and the professors.
The exam proctor took an hour to grade the written tests from the first exam, then organized the scores on a few identical sheets of paper and hung them on the wall. There was no way in hell that he would read off two hundred names.
William wasn't polite and stepped forward first, reading through the top ten to find his name.
"1. Yuhe Slightwing"
"2. Odessa NL"
"3. Gerwin Finst"
"4. Mikaela Mirov"
"5. Lute NL"
"6. William NL"
"7. Shye Lumina"
"8. Wonder Slightwing"
"9. Fero Slightwing"
"10. Juno Flamerium"
-System Quest completed. +5 Ascended Points.
Sixth place, not bad. William nodded in satisfaction while his number of Ascended Points increased to 9. Since each Ascended Point was worth one billion Potential Points, William technically had nine billion Points!
At the end of the week, he might be able to go on a spending spree!
The other students glanced at William briefly before focusing their attention on a petite girl with black hair and a button-like nose. Many knew her as Odessa, but up until now she had been regarded as just a normal Commoner without a family name.
Throughout the entire exam, she didn't make any waves. No one noticed her, and she kept to herself. She stayed quiet, remained silent, and listened. Even during the second exam when the students were fighting each other for a position, her Magic wasn't flashy and drew no attention.
Other than the proctor, only Odessa's opponent knew the true horror of her abilities. While the proctor simply gave Odessa a high rating, the young man unfortunate enough to face her was still shaking with fear and anxiety.
"Filem is only accepting fifty new students this year. If you're not on the list, you've failed. Follow my assistant out of the building and talk to your families to try again next year." the exam proctor stated while a wide-stomached young man entered the room at a casual pace.
"What? Only fifty? Last year was a hundred and twenty!" one of the students complained when he realized his name wasn't on the list. He had hidden most of his strength, expecting to easily secure a spot.
Others just like him voiced their complaints as well, hoping to convince the exam proctor to open more slots. What kind of person would wait until the end to tell them they should have tried harder?
The room became noisier, leading the exam proctor to clap his hands together while sound waves reverberated inside each of the students' eardrums. They held their hands against their ears, crouching down while wincing in pain.
William placed a single hand against one of his ears, removing it to see a bloodstain across his palm. His Hearing Protection Talent was still active along with his other resistances, yet the proctor had still caused this much pain.
The proctor glanced in William's direction and raised an eyebrow, but he didn't say anything and waited for the students to recover. He pointed at those who failed, then to the door as a silent order to leave the room immediately.
"If you want to appeal, speak to Vice Principal Kenny and we will send some study material to your families, and you can participate in final exams. If you pass, you'll still be on track to become a second year if we have slots."
Most of the students didn't hear what the proctor said because their ears were still bleeding, but they nodded regardless and trailed behind the assistant out of William's view. When there were only fifty students remaining in the room, the proctor twirled his finger and the doors closed automatically.
"Now that all the useless fucks are gone, congratulations." the exam proctor's right lip curled up slightly. "It's always good to have a trump card, but there's a fine line between holding back and being lazy. I see a few promising ones in this group, so hopefully you will be different."
Someone raised their hand, "Sir, isn't that too much? If there were only fifty slots left, why didn't you tell us earlier? My friend held back today and now we won't be in the same class." Discover exclusive tales on empire
The proctor shook his head and sighed, "Sucks to suck. Next time, I would tell your friends to try harder."
Every year, it never changed. The Filem Academy would regularly choose to accept lesser or more students depending on how many slots they were allotted by the Slightwing Family. This happened every. Single. Year.
There were no exceptions, and the students should be used to it by now. Most of them were from Excellent Families, whose Elders and Family Heads had probably attended Filem sometime in the past.
They knew the requirements, and their failure could only be attributed to their lack of ability or arrogance. That was all, and every proctor was tired of explaining it.
"But—" the student opened his mouth to speak again but was cut off by a directed soundwave that targeted him alone. A powerful force slammed him against the wall, his body crumpling to the floor as he fell unconscious.
"Does anyone else want to argue?" the proctor narrowed his eyes while scanning the room slowly.
No one said a word, but some of the students cast cold glances at the unconscious boy. It was shameful to have someone like him in their future classes.
"Alright then. Good." the proctor stepped in front of the score sheets and gathered them in a neat stack. He walked with them to the front of the room and held the sheets directly in front of him, then cast a simple Fire Spell to incinerate the scores into a crisp.
The students were too afraid to say anything, but their eyes widened in shock as all of their hard work was eliminated in an instant. At the front, the proctor remained perfectly calm, waiting until the last ember was gone.
"Does anyone understand why I did that?" he asked.
Juno raised his hand, "Because we all failed?"
The proctor almost laughed at that moment, but he stifled it with a cough. "Why would I bother grading your tests if it meant nothing?"
The room was silent for a long time before the proctor decided to answer, "There are multiple reasons, and you can't find one? You're all worse than I thought."
The students were slightly hurt by the proctor's words, but he didn't give anyone time to try and answer. "Flames, envelop my targets."
A wall of flames rose from all sides of the room, setting the desks and chairs ablaze while slowly closing in on the group. At first, the students were caught off guard by the sudden Law-enhanced Spell, but their surprise shifted to fear as their clothing started to smolder.
The proctor didn't let up and controlled the wall of flames to close in on the group, forcing the students to mobilize their Mana and defend themselves as best as possible.
It was useless, though, and the students quickly realized it. There were only two ways to defeat someone that had comprehended a Primary Law: counter it with another Primary Law or use overwhelming power to suppress everything.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
The proctor was at least in the Deity Realm, possibly higher. Compared to Ascension Realm students, he was an insurmountable obstacle that could not be overcome easily. Those on the outside were killed in a few moments, reappearing a few meters away and surrounded by a thin veil of light that protected them from being killed a second time.
"No matter how talented you think you are. No matter how impressive your combat power, or how unique your innate abilities, you need time to grow. In the face of overwhelming strength, you are nothing."
Another group of students were incinerated and the flames edged ever closer to William, the heat more intense than even the core of the World Efretta.
"Your scores today had one meaning, to determine whether you did or did not meet the entrance requirements. Ranks such as top ten, top five, top three, and top one... they do not matter.
The only score that matters will be the one you receive during your final exams. Until then, work hard and surpass those that might have ranked above you today."
The flames reached the center of the group, where only William and four others were left standing. Just before William's cloak caught fire, the proctor waved his hand and dispersed the flames, considering his message sent.
"Learn today and be better tomorrow. That is our motto. Welcome to Filem Academy."
