Chapter 20
C20 – Discussing A Plan
“Rocher is a masculine name,” Shire clarified, “I had some misconceptions earlier.”
“The name is essentially a code. The lands around Yin Yu Castle are arid. The world of embroidery and silk isn’t meant for my life,” she stated, towering over many men.
“I favor a noble and robust spirit,” Gradiu remarked, “They’re the chewy ones, digestible when consumed, or even if not, their influence is undeniable. Watching them gradually break free from their constraints and embrace their true essence is truly intriguing.”
“You’re referring to ‘deep-seated corruption’,” Shire responded inwardly.
“By your criteria, every mortal has been inherently selfish and tainted since birth, and the so-called honesty and diligence they develop afterward is, in fact, a distortion of human nature. Tut, tut, tut, what an amusing notion.”
Shire took a seat on the chair, feeling the discomfort from its hard wooden surface.
“I bear a mission,” Rocher stated, “Lord Reney tasked me with swiftly eradicating the Winged Devil. In regard to this objective, if you’re in agreement, we can collaborate. Should you dissent, I’ll confine you. If you remain neutral, I’ll temporarily curtail your freedom. We’ll await the resolution of this issue before allowing you to depart. The Winged Devil has created a significant issue within the territory. If another force undermines us covertly now, we could lose control of the situation.”
There was a Winged Devil!
… “Actually, I’m a Devil Hunter.” Since Rocher had already clarified the situation, Shire saw no point in hiding his identity any longer. He appreciated individuals like Rocher who communicated succinctly and directly.
“Devil Hunter.” Rocher pondered the weight of this term and its implications. “A devil fled from your sacred precinct. It happened during daylight, witnessed by many residents.”
“I’m not well-acquainted with the details, but I got wind of devil disturbances and swiftly made my way back to Gray Tree Hall.”
“If I’m not mistaken, the Holy Church is under Frederick’s jurisdiction. He serves as the Hunter Master of Upper Lawman.”
“Master Frederick perished in combat.” Shire sighed, “Not just him, but many others as well.”
“Allow me a brief moment to mourn for him. We inhabited the same city, yet our paths never crossed. Nonetheless, I’ve heard of his many remarkable deeds… He forsook his inheritance and chose to confront devils, even at the cost of his life. His passing is an immense loss to this world,” she murmured, bowing her head in silent reverence.
Shire mirrored her actions, her demeanor worthy of emulation.
In his heart, he whispered, “Sky deity, Lord Edward, if you do exist, may you bless Frederick’s soul and guide him through the cycle of rebirth, along with others…”
“Tedious! Feigned believers!” Gradiu exclaimed, “What’s with the ‘if you really exist’? If you’re doubtful about a god’s existence, you shouldn’t have believed in it!”
“Why? I genuinely don’t know if a god exists. If indeed there is a deity, I’d expect lightning to strike you down.”
“Ah, what a fearsome youth you are, just seventeen and already entertaining the thought of invoking supernatural power against an obedient demon,” Gradiu muttered, “By the way, Frederick’s soul is already feasting in my belly. I assure you he’s in good care there.”
Rocher ended his mourning for Frederick.
Shire felt fortunate that he didn’t have to waste time arguing with the devil. He could instead focus on real-world matters.
“Clearly, due to the Winged Devil’s escape from your sacred palace, as a Devil Hunter member, you hold an absolute responsibility to assist us in its eradication,” Rocher stated.
“Yes, I need that information to enhance our chances of defeating it.”
“‘Winged Devil’ is a name we’ve given it based on some of its traits. It’s characterized by its formidable wings that allow it to take flight. It’s larger than regular birds, and it’s exceedingly gluttonous. It preys on livestock and pedestrians both day and night. At least thirty-nine people have fallen victim so far, not to mention countless animals. Its feeding scenes are gruesomely bloody… The innocent folk driven to madness by the illusion of encountering this devil… They go berserk, frenzied, repeatedly striking at thin air. Simultaneously, as the court wizards claim, the demons absorb their victims’ souls to bolster their strength. As a Devil Hunter, you… You should be more aware than I am.”
“I understand,” Shire sighed with concern. Influencing others’ minds and assimilating their souls were typical hallmarks of devils. If it shared traits with Gradiu, it might also manipulate illusions, create phantoms, and possess other nefarious abilities, rendering it an even more formidable adversary.
“Gray Tree Hall belongs to the esteemed Count Alberta, known for his fair and generous nature. He’s been devoted to safeguarding his people. Ever since receiving the news, he’s been consumed by sadness, neglecting his own needs. As a vassal of the Count, upon receiving his command, I didn’t hesitate to face any obstacle,” Rocher shared. Curiously, when these lofty words left her lips, they took on a formal and solemn tone.
“The Count’s reputation isn’t stellar,” Shire diplomatically remarked, implying the other Devil Hunter depicted the Lord as a two-legged pig.
“Even though the Count is my superior, when describing his character, I won’t sugarcoat it out of respect for honesty. Indeed. The Count has an unyielding nature and an insatiable greed. Nevertheless, he’s adept at manipulating people. In the midst of demonic turmoil, he immediately summoned me to quell the chaos. Even though he might be overstating it, under such circumstances, I’m undoubtedly the best and most suitable candidate. This, in itself, demonstrates that… Lord Reney is absolutely capable of governing Gray Tree Hall,” Rocher’s eyes revealed her resolute ambition.
Nonetheless, due to Roman tradition, women faced constraints within the feudal system. Shire wasn’t aware of the pressure and challenges she had to endure.
“I’m in agreement,” Shire affirmed.
“To avert any misconceptions, I need to clarify some aspects as well. Our Lord, Count Reney Alberta, though known for being frugal, rewards exceptional performance. If one demonstrates remarkable competence, the Count will undoubtedly promote them, bestowing honor and wealth commensurate with their abilities. Without a doubt, displaying adequate skill would result in me relaying your achievements to the Count, leading to an elevated status beyond your current position.”
Upon hearing these commitments, Shire was slightly moved. “Let’s discuss the devil-hunting matter.”
“That’s unnecessary.”
Rocher’s response left Shire astonished.
No need? What did this imply? Why shouldn’t they deliberate on how to exterminate demons? How to approach, attack, eliminate, and ultimately end this turmoil. Wasn’t this topic worth discussing?
“There’s no need to discuss it? Then, how should we address it?” Shire pressed urgently.
“I don’t know your name yet.”
“I am Shire.”
“The man nodded. Excellent, Shire. Prior to your arrival, our standard practice upon encountering a Winged Devil was to approach Hunter Palace for assistance. However, there was no response,” Rocher explained.
Certainly, there would be no response. It would be astonishing if there were. All eight hunters in the Upper Lawman had convened in the Twilight Forest for the hunt of the Bladeblade Devil. Why would there be anyone left at the Holy Church?
“We’re all on mission.”
“Indeed, the Devil Hunters are deeply engaged in their missions. Within the territory, a Malevolent Demon has launched aerial attacks on the village, causing chaos. Waiting for the hunters to return is a luxury we can’t afford. Therefore, we formed a highly efficient team even before your arrival. Your task is to collaborate with us.”
“Collaborate?” Shire found it difficult to believe, “…Apart from the Devil Hunters, who else possesses the expertise to combat Malevolent Devils?”
“You’ll witness it.” Rocher stood up and signaled the soldiers outside, “Summon Mr. Teibout.”
Only the Devil Hunters understood the art of devil hunting. This was something Etienne had conveyed to Shire a long time ago, a belief deeply entrenched in his heart. If there existed someone else capable of facing devils, Shire would struggle to accept it.
If they didn’t require my services, then there would be no need for the Devil Hunters… What should I do?
Waiting filled him with unease. Fortunately, the sound of footsteps drew near to the tent, and an individual entered.
“Sir, you were seeking me?” Shire spotted a man with a medium-length hairstyle, red hair, blue eyes, and a slight beard. Wearing a faint smile, he seemed rather casual. “Is there a guest?” The man’s attention also shifted toward Shire.
“Yes, Teibout. This is Shire, a Devil Hunter.”
At the mention of “Devil Hunter,” Teibout’s expression darkened. He furrowed his brows and crossed his arms over his chest. He scrutinized Shire and then eased his posture.
“Oh, a Devil Hunter. Impressive.” He intentionally elongated his tone and adopted an irritating manner. “Truly impressive. The renowned Devil Hunter, dedicated to making a livelihood out of hunting devils. Must be quite the professional.”
The more Shire listened, the more uncomfortable he felt. He pressed his lips together and remained silent.
“Observe this demeanor. Behold,” Teibout spoke disdainfully, “it’s as if I’m a monstrous entity. Should this youngster act, adults, please ensure my safety.”
“No need for concern. I have faith in Shire’s unwavering commitment to the noble cause of combating devils.”
“Understood.” The repugnant grin on Teibout’s face vanished, only to be replaced by an even more grating affectation.
“Shire, you see, we’ve secured the services of the experienced Mr. Teibout. Hailing from the Fan Shan region, he’s brought his band of mercenaries to equip us with cutting-edge demon-hunting gear,” Rocher explained.
“Demons can’t be defeated by mere tools,” Shire couldn’t help interjecting.
“Is that so?” Teibout coldly snorted. “It’s not merely a tool; it’s a war machine, a dominator of warfare.”
“Don’t worry about it. Some things are tough to comprehend until you witness them firsthand,” Rocher advised.
“Precisely, Master Rocher,” Teibout acknowledged Rocher before turning to Shire. “Shall we then? I’ll show you what true power looks like. Once you’ve witnessed it, you’ll realize the shallowness of your previous perspective.”
Shire’s expression tightened. He was keen to discern what fueled their confidence.
