Chapter 12
C12 – I Didn’t Cheat
At that moment, all eyes were fixed on the political science class representative.
She was a slender girl named Ye Lin, bespectacled and appearing quite frail.
A modest smile graced her face, yet her eyes betrayed a sense of pride.
Ye Lin had earned her position as class representative primarily because her political science grades were top-notch.
Moreover, she was known for her kindness, frequently lending her homework to classmates for them to copy.
However, she had never extended such generosity to Qi Ning.
In her view, Qi Ning was not just academically challenged; he was also impoverished.
Ye Lin came from a decent background, with both parents serving as civil servants. As a result, she looked down on those like Qi Ning, who struggled academically and came from less affluent families.
She reserved her friendliness for those who either surpassed her in wealth or academic performance.
Wen Shangwei watched Ye Lin with a slight furrow in his brow.
She was the student he interacted with most in the class.
To him, Ye Lin was a diligent student but far from a commendable classmate—in fact, she was quite the opposite.
Amid the eager anticipation of the class, Wen Shangwei felt a twinge of regret.
He tapped the desk and announced, “The student who nearly aced the test this time is Qi Ning!”
The room fell into stunned silence at his declaration.
“That’s impossible!”
“He must have cheated; there’s no way he could score that high otherwise.”
“Full marks? Teacher, do you really think he’s capable of that?”
“Something’s off with his test paper; he couldn’t have earned that score legitimately.”
Qi Ning’s expression darkened as he listened to the murmurs around him.
Not a single person regarded him with shock or admiration. Instead, they looked on with skepticism, ridicule, and even disdain.
“Let’s have some quiet!” Wen Shangwei commanded, gesturing for calm. “I’ve reviewed Qi Ning’s exam thoroughly, multiple times. There is absolutely no error. He truly achieved a perfect score.”
Yet the students remained incredulous.
Ye Lin, in particular, seemed to harbor a baffling fury.
“Did you cheat?” she demanded, striding up to Qi Ning with fiery eyes.
Qi Ning felt a tight knot of frustration as he met Ye Lin’s skeptical gaze.
“I didn’t,” he asserted, rising to his feet to face her directly.
“You didn’t cheat?” Ye Lin was unconvinced, given Qi Ning’s consistently poor performance. “Then how do you explain scoring perfectly?”
With a furrowed brow, Qi Ning’s eyes blazed with indignation.
“Because I’m excellent.”
His declaration was met with laughter from the entire class.
“Excellent? More like you cheated on the test.”
“Could you really score that high without cheating?”
“I don’t care what the others think; I just don’t buy it.”
The class’s ridicule of Qi Ning was unanimous.
Amidst the mockery, Pang Yuejuan stood alone, her fists clenched, silently rooting for Qi Ning.
“He didn’t cheat,” Wen Shangwei stated coldly, fixing Ye Lin with an icy stare.
Ye Lin’s jealousy flared uncontrollably, and she refused to take anyone’s word at this point.
“Why do you say he didn’t cheat?” Ye Lin’s eyes bore into Wen Shangwei, filled with doubt.
It was the first time Wen Shangwei had ever seen such a look in Ye Lin’s eyes.
“I didn’t cheat,” Qi Ning proclaimed, his voice strong and neck stiff with defiance.
