Chapter 45 – Ambushes
Chapter 45 – Ambushes
Max continued playing without stopping. He particularly enjoyed climbing the mountain and jumping to the other side. When he arrived at the foot of the mountain, donations poured in from impressed viewers, and he took some time to thank those people.
Even so, his journey hadn't ended yet.
"The next objective has appeared," Max exclaimed as he put his hand above his eye. The sun was about to set, and the background turned orange now, "I believe this is the last one. Isn't that right, guys?"
— It's been a long journey…
— More like the fastest journey…
— If Breeze isn't a newbie, wouldn't he finish this game in under two hours? That's possible, right?
— Ask him to learn how to ride a horse first!
— So long, Breeze! Reach the countryside and end this game with a bam!
"Ahaha, I know what you wanted. Don't worry, I will surely do it." Max laughed and began to move once again. He entered a dense forest.
The branches and leaves created a natural canopy that blocked the sunlight. It created a dark shade and made this forest look like night all the time.
Thus, this area was called Midnight Forest by the players, although it actually had no official name.
Looking around the area, Max slowly pushed forward, following the trail.
"It's really dark here."
His field of vision was narrowed to only a few meters in front of him.
Because of his light baggage, he had nothing like a torch in his bag. Not to mention, the branches and trunk seemed to be wet. He couldn't light a fire and made a makeshift torch with them. So, getting any artificial light source in this place was impossible.
Creak…
Swish… Woosh…
Awooo!!
The sound of the branches rubbing each other rang, filling the forest. Bushes moved due to the movement of small animals. And animals' howl reverberated in the distance.
Max instantly became cautious and looked around with full attention.
"I feel like something can spring up at any moment." He said while laughing bitterly.
It was like he traveled to a mountain full of bandits. Due to the darkness, he felt in danger even if he couldn't see anything beyond 5 meters.
Not to mention…
— Guhahaha! I am taking your soul!
— How dare thee enter this ancestor's territory! Scram!
— I am the darkness, lurking in the shadows to hunt down Breeze!
— Be careful! On your six!
— Cough, please look away. I am busy with my girlfriend, R hand here.
— One two three frogs leaping, oh no, Breeze is slipping!
— Don't worry~ Nothing will happen to you
— Hello darkness, my old friend…
— This is… REQUIEM! n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
… The chat worsened the situation, and they didn't even try to help Max.
Three minutes had passed since he entered. Max was talking to his viewers and lowered his guard after nothing happened. The forest was long, and at the end of it laid the Frontier City, his destination.
"It looks like we still need to walk 5 more minutes before we exit the forest." He muttered to himself as he squinted his eyes, looking at the glowing light that became slightly bigger because it was closer than before.
Furthermore, he already estimated how far the exit was when he was on top of the mountain. He was confident to say that he almost reached the halfway point in the forest.
"Should I run at full speed? What do you guys think? This forest has good branches I can use to jump around."
At that moment, the bush on his left moved aggressively. It happened many times before, and all of them were false alarms.
However, Max wouldn't take the chance to ignore it. This time, it was different.
"Awooo!!"
"Grrr!"
Two ferocious wolves sprung out from the bushes, baring their fangs at him. Their eyes looked at him as if he was a prey.
"SHIT!" Max cursed loudly as he leaped backward to dodge them.
The wolves' bites missed him, and they only got air. They raised their heads at once and growled loudly to intimidate him.
Looking at the wolves, Max smiled wryly and asked the chat in a low voice, "Chat, do you think I can handle them?"
— There are only two wolves.
— Kill them! Give me blood, huahahaha!
— Just axe them, Breeze!
— We want to see violence
"You know that violence is not good, right?" Max retorted with a flat face as he pulled out his axe and threw his bag to the ground, "But you're right. I can definitely handle two of them. Child, don't try this at home!"
— Wohoo
— Kill kill kill
— Give my right arm wolf's blood! It's the ingredient for my apotheosis!
As soon as he finished speaking, the wolves attacked him once again. They pounced from two directions, sandwiching Max, who lowered his stance. His eyes moved fast, observing their movement, before he dashed forward between the wolves.
Behind him was a tree, so that wasn't the way out. Unlike battling humans, his opponent was an animal. Even if they were clever, their attacks were simple enough.
So, the best way to get out of this situation without getting injured in the process was to dash forward.
'I need to be careful as I can't take any hits at all.' He thought as he ran toward the left wolf.
"You are first!"
Max shouted loudly as his right hand, which held the axe, turned into a blur. The next thing that happened was blood gushing out from the severed head as the wolf's lifeless body fell to the ground with a thud.
He passed the other wolf by ducking.
Screech!
Using his legs, he stopped advancing and immediately leaped back with great force. He managed to catch up to the second wolf that just landed on the ground and spun his body like a fan. His axe struck the back of the wolf's head and split its head.
"Fuh!" Max was able to land safely with his hand and wiped his forehead, "That was scary."
— Scary…
— You're the scary one! How can you kill them that fast?!
— Normal players would run away… I don't believe he just confronted them like that…
"Come on, guys. You said I should kill them." Max complained as he picked up the bag he had thrown earlier. He wiped the blood that got on his face and put his axe back to his waistlock. "Besides, it's just two wolves. If there are three of them, I don't think I will be able to survive."
— Normal people can't even fight one-on-one with wolves.
— Even StoneSword had a hard time and died once against those two wolves.
— Dumdum! Don't compare Breeze with SS. It's obvious that the latter is a pro gamer while Breeze is just a monster!
— Oh, shiet! You're right!
"I am not a freaking monster!" He sighed tiredly. "Well, anyway. Let's con–"
"Grrr…!"
"Awooooo!"
"Grrrrrr!!"
"Woooo!!"
Just before Max could finish his sentence, he heard loud growls and howls from behind. He turned around immediately and saw six pairs of shiny golden eyes observing him from within bushes.
It didn't need a genius to know who they were and what they were here for.
"Guys…" Max took steps back slowly as he spoke with a trembling voice. "I guess this is time to run!"
Saying that he kicked the ground and ran at full speed at once. The wolves followed him almost immediately, pouncing on the ground and creating a formation. Their bloodlust was clear from their eyes. They were determined to kill him.
Also…
— Du du du du dudu, du du du du du
— aye! Don't run, you rascal!
— Get over here!
— Run bitch, run!!
— Move bitch! Get out of the way! Breeze is passing through!
The viewers got excited at the sight of Max running at full speed while jumping around boulders and fallen trees like a scared rabbit.
